Rewording Ability-Granting Lords

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by doopboopdoop 13 Comments

Has it ever been considered to reword ability granting lords to say "CARDNAME and other creatures get..." instead of the current system of saying its effect twice? So say Lyra Dawnbringer would say "Lyra Dawnbringer and other angels have lifelink"

I don’t think that has been considered.

Commander Color Rules

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by luminous-umbra 33 Comments

Out of curiosity (relating to your point about hybrid mana in Commander), do you feel similarly about cards such as Ancient Grudge or the Bringer cycle from Fifth Dawn? That is, cards that have an alternate way to be cast that uses more or different colors, which can only go in commander decks with all of the colors on the card?

I do not. Ancient Grudge is designed such that it can go in a monored deck in limited formats where you might be pinched for cards, but in constructed formats it’s expected that it goes in a red and green deck.

Exert Errata Discussion

New 20 Jun 2023 Asked by nutsofoden 35 Comments

""Are there any plans to errata, exert - put a stun counter on this creature?" "There are no current plans to do that."" - I would hope not, I do not want to suddenly have to worry about my opponents proliferating stun counters on my Glorybringer. It sounds like an errata that makes sense, but would change the functionality of the mechanic.

Change of functionality is the biggest issue.

Backup Mechanic Interaction

New 29 Mar 2023 Asked by badgerbattalion 31 Comments

Hey Mark! How does Backup interact with mutate and copied creatures? If I mutate something with trample onto Boon-Bringer Valkyrie, and then make a copy of that card. Can the copy then grant flying, first strike, lifelink , and trample onto a creature it targets with backup when the copy etbs?

Back-up only grants the abilities printed on the card, below the back-up ability. It doesn’t copy other text which might have been text spliced or copied onto the card.

Elesh Norn Design Talk

New 18 Dec 2022 Asked by entari0 65 Comments

Regarding the "In-colorness" of the new Elesh Norn, I think it falls in a similar category as the original Urabrask. Making your opponents creatures enter tapped isnt really a red thing, but its a perfect fit for the opposite side of the coin for giving your board haste. Similarly, white has previously gotten the ability to turn off etb effects, through Hushbringer, Hushwing Gryff, Strict Proctor, and Tocatli Honor Guard, and doubling yours is a perfect foil to that. Would you agree with this analysis?

The Praetor mirrored design is tricky to do, so we have to allow sone bends.

Art Choices Explained

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by waywardskald 31 Comments

With the lieges from the shadowmoor block making a return in double masters 2022, why was deathbringer liege the only one to get new art?

The art director has a budget for new art and applies it as they see fit. There is no obligation to change all the art of a cycle.

New Art for Deathbringer Liege

New 29 Jun 2022 Asked by righteousforest 36 Comments

Won't be at all surprised if you don't know the answer to this question, but why in 2X2 did Deathbringer Liege get new art but none of the other lieges?

The Art Director gets a certain number of art slots (based on the budget of the set) to use as they see fit. There are all sorts of reasons to chose any one particular card.

Thingers or Doers Request

New 04 Apr 2022 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 36 Comments

the batch that everybody really wants is bringer, monger, and volver. you could call them "thingers" or "doers" because their creature types aren't evocative of a specific form but simply imply that they do a thing.

That’s the first time I’ve had this request.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 71 Comments

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

High Beeble Scale Creature Types

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 53 Comments

Why are so many creature types that are unique to magic high on the beeble scale? Spike (7), Slith (7), Beeble (10), Atog (7), Bringer (9), Brushwagg (8), Homarid (8), Lhurgoyf (7), Licid (9 1/2), Monger (9), Nephilim (8), Noggle (8), Ouphe (9), Phelddagrif (9 1/2). These original creatures were a huge reason I fell in love with earlier magic and I feel like you guys have basically abandoned most of them in favor of more generic creatures.

Two things:1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic. 2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe).

Flavor Words in New Set

New 24 Jul 2021 Asked by quantumcat2002 36 Comments

I wanted to say again how great this set is. Ive been an on again off again player since revised but I was in an off period before this. The flavor of this set has gotten me back into it full force. A lot of people in the comments were hating on the flavor words but those people probably aren't dnd fans. Those flavor words give so much life to this set. Cards like Dawnbringer cleric being able to depict multiple dnd spells by name had been crucial to my enjoyment of the set and getting me back into the game.

Many people enjoy the flavor words. I’ve gotten plenty of compliments on them.

Trivia About Lyra Dawnbringer

New 01 Jan 2021 Asked by clericofrhonas 45 Comments

Hey Mark, the 31st was my birthday! Can I use my birthday trivia rites to ask for trivia about Lyra Dawnbringer? She’s my new girlfriend’s first commander and introduction to Magic!

I don’t have much trivia on Lyra. I believe she was made as an Angel lord that we thought would have a decent chance of seeing play in some larger formats, especially in more casual play. Happy Birthday!

Monocolor Creature Types

"There are not a lot of non-class creature types that have appeared on monocolor cards of every color." Just of the top some that have appeared as monocolor cards in every color (in cycles) are Spirit, Avatar, Incarnation, Bringer, God, Demigod, Shapeshifter, and Kirin. Also Human of course.

A 9. They’re tied to a very specific and narrow mechanical execution.

9 Kings Reference

New 11 Jan 2020 Asked by nalthian 49 Comments

magic pop culture reference: Lightbringer, by Brent Weeks has a prominent card game called 9 kings which he says was completely based on magic. he really has fun with it, creating his own mechanics, like instead mana the game is played with a sundial and each turn you're able to play more powerful cards, until mid day when the sun is at is highest point and then the cards go down again. very interesting stuff and some of my favorite parts of the book. let me know if you already knew this!

Interesting.

Arena Cards in Paper

There’s a chance for all the ones in color pie.

White's Reanimation Capabilities

New 24 Sep 2019 Asked by greatdinn 34 Comments

White seems to get full reanimation, just not as often as black, and slightly more often with restrictions. Defy Death, Miraculous Recovery, Mistmoon Griffin, Karmic Guide, Profound Journey, Pulsemage Advocate, Resurrection, and Reya Dawnbringer gave no restrictions on creature returns.

White gets general reanimation infrequently, but multicolor usually doesn’t get to tap into tertiary abilities.
