Dream of A Pie

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by the-pokemon-prof 11 Comments

since people are sharing Maro dreams, I figured I'd share the dream I had a few weeks back (recorded in a place of honour in my drema journal) where I baked you a delicious apple pie, gave it to you at a convention, and when you bit into it you were horrified to find it full of foil copies of doubling season. you banned me from playing magic forever and i was thrown in the secret WOTC dungeons for my crime.

My dream self didn’t like Doubling Season pie?

Commander Card Inclusion Concerns

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by beatsandskies 42 Comments

Hi Maro: I’m definitely disappointed that there won’t be normal Commanders in the Commander decks. If people want a foil or showcase version then isn’t that what the collector boosters are for? I recently picked up the last set of challenger decks for casual play and it’s annoying I need to order another Kappa Tech-Wrecker and normal VOW/MID basics to replace included cards. I absolutely love precons — note my profile pic — and it’d be sad if they became another thing which “isn’t for me”.

The challenge is some players want one thing and some want another and we can only do one thing. As for putting the Commanders in the collector booster, we’ve done extensive polling of the audience for the collector booster and they mostly don’t want the Commander cards in the product.

When/if: return of galaxy foil treatment?

I hope when. It’s pretty.

Foil Poison Counter Tokens

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by gimme-more-maro 4 Comments

Can I request a foil Poison counter token in a future set? ONE seemingly doesn't have one among all of its double-sided tokens, and it'd be a nice piece of bling if Poison returns as a cameo in the future or fits into an appropriate non-premier set.

I’ll pass the note along.

Etched Foil Card Appreciation

Wanted to mention that adding flavor text to the etched foil version of cards in the Assassins Creed set was a nice touch, i always like it when theres more flavor text.

Glad you liked it.

Feedback on MH3 Foil Cards

New 08 Jun 2024 Asked by izzipurrito 32 Comments

I'm sure you're giving out a ton of high fives to the designers, but I would like to throw a hive five at the guys who manage how the foil cards in MH3 are printed.Whatever you guys did, it's working, because these are the best foils I have seen in a set in a very long time.Home. Run.

I’ll try and high five.

Foil Rarity Symbol Discussion

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 21 Comments

Has there been any discussion to make foil its own rarity and give it a different color set symbol. That would be idiotic. Rarity is how rare the CARD is, not that specific printing of it. And having some cards only available in foil would make the foil treatment completely meaningless.

I think what the person was asking was foil cards happen at a lower occurrence than nonfoil cards. Could the rarity symbol reflect that? The challenge is it would require a bunch of new rarity symbols as foils of different rarities occur at different rates.

Foil as Separate Rarity

I have not heard such a thing talked about.

Old Frame Hybrid Explanation

New 18 May 2024 Asked by rexosaurus 37 Comments

Why does Lavinia, Foil to Conspiracy have a gold ‘97 frame instead of a hybrid ‘97 frame like Deathrite Shaman?

Hybrid didn’t exist at the time of the old frame, so there is debate of what old frame are we supposed to use. Lavinia, Foil to Conspiracy takes a old fashioned sensibility choosing a frame that existed at the time that would have been the most likely frame that would have been used if hybrid existed. Remember in ‘97, all multicolor cards had the same gold frame without any pinlines or hints at what the colors of the card were.Deathrite Shaman applies a modern sensibility choosing to make a new frame that mimics what a modern hybrid frame would look like as an old frame. It comes down to what is the purpose of the old style frames, to capture how it would have been done at the time or mimic what we do now, but with an older aesthetic. Different players want different things.

Reprinting Foil-Only Cards

New 09 May 2024 Asked by trevthetree 33 Comments

Is there any chance we could get a big reprinting of cards that have had only foil printings? I want to play Mairsil, the Pretender, but it's only printed in foil, which I'm not a fan of personally.

If there is enough demand for it, absolutely.

Foil Card Thanks

Improved Foil Quality

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by boostercrack 35 Comments

Hi Mark! Thunder Junction looks great! Very excited to get my hands on the new cards at pre release. One thing I’ve noticed from the last two sets is that the print quality of foils has gotten much better, haven’t had a single foil from LCI or MKM curl so I’d love to give high fives to whoever is responsible for this

High fives to be passed along.

Commander Precons Model

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by izzipurrito 34 Comments

I've noticed a trend with some sets, namely Doctor Who and Fallout, where the entire set of cards is contained in the Commander Precons and they are released alongside a collector booster for those who like foils.I want to say that, despite me not liking Commander one bit, I really like this model and would be in favor of this model being used for products that reprint cards, like Ultimate Masters and Double Masters.I would unironically buy precons like this if it was designed this way. Give a high five to whoever thought of this, because they did a good job.

Will do.

Prelease Deck Showcase

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 26 Comments

At the prerelease one player had 7 Slime against Humanity (2 were foil) it was really impressive watch their opponant just unable to really manage it, kind of reminded me of Pack Rat. But the two most egregious deck was the ultimate winner with 4 mythics and 4 rares with 2 copies of Aurelia's Vindicator, Incinerator of the Guilty and Argus Kos, then double Elegant Parlor, Wojek Investigator and Krenko, with 3 copies of Lighting Helix to really round out the deck. While my first round opponant got dual lands for 5 rares, Reenact the Crime and Archdruids Charm, they had only 4 removal and only 2 flyers in their whole pull. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes Oko shows up and steals all your playable rares. Overall the games were some of the most fun nearly every player I spoke with had in years. Great job.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Foil Only Card Policy

New 29 Dec 2023 Asked by riptidecrab 43 Comments

Any card that is printed foil only in a commander deck can and should be printed plain in collector boosters. Same goes for other alt treatments. Mmkay?

Two issues: 1) Not every product has a collector booster associated with it. 2) When we ask collector booster buyers if they want nonfoil collector cards in the collector boosters, the large majority say they do not.

UB Precon Token Request

New 21 Oct 2023 Asked by clarknes 27 Comments

Can I request that for future universes beyond commander precons with collector boosters, the double sided tokens in the boosters match sides with the ones in the precons? I’m keeping 4 decks to play together and got a special Deckbox with 4 token compartments, but some of the foil tokens are tokens for 2 different decks. It’s a small problem but it is a bit inconvenient.

I can pass the request along.

Poison Counter Mechanics

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by gmzombie007 30 Comments

Hey Mark I've been away from this Tumblr but I'm wondering why a card wasn't made to counter the effects of poison? Like a reprint of solemnity or even a card that would take a few turns to remove all poison in flavor of the story how they used a spark and melira to cleanse the spark of ajani and what they tried with Nissa. I think that was a flavor fail and playpoint fail. My hope is you guys at least print something that fixes this in the future for standard. I had so much fun with the prerelease this past weekend by the way. I love the enchanted tales addition. I had to run green as I pulled a doubling season and a foil defense of the heart lol.

One of the defining qualities of poison in the game is that it can’t be removed. It makes it play very differently than life and makes the mechanic feel more threatening. Note there are cards that can help you prevent getting future poison, just none that take away what you already have (okay except Leeches, but I pretend that card doesn’t exist).

Nonfoil Options Query

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by kynelan-mdw 19 Comments

For the Secret Lair Commander decks that come out, why don't you have an option of nonfoil versions? I saw the bonus card for the Angel deck and would love it for my Borderless Modern deck but it is foil! Do you have plans for making these foil only cards available in non foil?

My best guess is there isn’t enough demand for both, but I can pass the note along.

Special Features Frequency

New 29 Jul 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 92 Comments

"Masterpieces essentially morphed into booster fun and bonus sheets. Masterpieces just happened too infrequently."

Hi Mark,

You used to frequently champion the mantra of "if everything is special then nothing is special" but it feels like Magic has been moving away from that perspective in recent years. Is that fair to say? If so why?

The scarcity and rarity of the original Masterpieces were a big part of their luster and desirability. It meant that while it was very unlikely to happen, you could encounter a Masterpiece in Kaladesh Draft or just when cracking a pack for fun. Because it very rarely happened, when it did happen, it was extremely special.

Foils used to be scarce, but now because they are guaranteed in Set Boosters and Collector Boosters, are they really special anymore?

You used to say we don't do Full Art Basics all the time because us doing it on occassion generates much more enthusiasm and hype for them. I think this is true and I find players get way less excited when full art lands are previewed because they aren't special anymore.

Cards used to get special promo art on occasion, but now numerous cards have several different art printings so it doesn't feel special anymore. Every rare has a pre-release promo version (which wasn't always the case) is another example.

For years, rares and mythic rares were substantially more scarce than uncommons and commons because the overwhelming majority of cards were printed in draft boosters where the odds of encountering specific rarities were consistent for years but now rarity doesn't mean anything outside of Limited.

Foils used to feel "special" but now there are several different types of foiling so it feels like they none of them are particularly special.

Thoughts?

All of this is a response to us making more decisions based on data. Instead of us guessing what we think the players want, we both ask them and watch their behavior. We then analyze all the data to match player desire.Let me take full-art lands as an example. The data said players want more access to them, but they would feel less special if they were the default, so we’ve incorporated them into booster fun.I’ll note that we keep trying new things, which can result in new data that changes how we do something. It’s an ever-evolving process, much like the game of Magic itself.

Feedback on Foil Cards

New 06 May 2023 Asked by zombiedinosaurtoken-deactivated 48 Comments

Mark, I gave this feedback a few times already but it is time to ask for it again: please stop printing cards that are only available in foil. For some reason only 3 of the 4 face cards of the Commander Masters decks will be available in non-foil versions and that's quite disappointing. Foil cards bend a lot during winter where I live, making them unusable. They are also harder to read and, in my opinion, look uglier than the regular version.

I will pass along the note (and have numerous times before).
