Release of Suspine Lynx

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 2 Comments

Hey mark it’s me the guy thats been begging for mass nonbasic hate in standard/pioneer for months I just saw the card Suspine Lynx was spoiled THIS IS SO AWESOME! twice the cost of Price of progress for half the damage obviously isn’t as good, but price of progress is also too strong for either of those formats anyway. Plus being on a 5/4 with two other relevant abilities is AWESOME! THANK YOU

You’re welcome.

Beeble Scale Ranking

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by vitorsly 31 Comments

Hey, big fan of some of the more "monstrous humanoid" types here, particularly around Red, and I was wondering where in the Beeble Scale would Ogres, Trolls, Cyclopses and Giants be?

Giants are a 1, Ogres a 2, Trolls a 3, and Cyclops a 4.

Creature Type Uniqueness

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by bcrazy713 111 Comments

Hey Mark, on the topic of players being worried about creature types losing their distinctiveness by being added in with the broader type rather than a specific race (ex. Viashino(Lizard) or Naga(Snake)), I looked to see how many are already currently templated this way and there are ALOT more than I realized.Archaic (Avatar), Aven (Bird), Leonin (Cat), Malamet (Cat), Nishoba (Cat Beast), Daemogoth (Demon), Ainok (Dog), Flamekin (Elemental), Loxodon (Elephant), Mycoid (Fungus), Thallid (Fungus), Akki (Goblin), Boggart (Goblin), Mogg (Goblin), Redcaps (Goblin), Eumidian (Insect), Kraul (Insect), Nantuko (Insect), Khenra (Jackal), Kitsune (Fox), Merrow (Merfolk), Selkie (Merfolk), Triton (Merfolk), Onakke (Ogre), Caryatid (Plant), Nezume (Rat), Rhox (Rhino), Amphin (Salamander), Orochi (Snake), Kami (Spirit), Drogskol (Spirit), Eidolon (Spirit), Ent (LoTR) (Treefolk), Trow (Troll), Kappa (Turtle), Liche (Zombie), Eternal (Zombie), Draugr (Zombie), Nim (Zombie), Skaab (Zombie)

Yep. Most of the ones that didn’t do it entered the game before we made this the default.

Grey Ogre Linguistics

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by mbocek 35 Comments

In your view, why are 3-mana 2/2s Grey Ogres and not Pearled Unicorns or Scathe Zombies?

Ah, the power of language. Use terminology for a while and it just becomes vocabulary. My guess is it was the shortest of the three.

DFC Variation

New 22 Dec 2023 Asked by strymon 27 Comments

Is it possible to have DFCs outside of Acorn where there the backside can vary - Knight of the Kitchen Sink style? If not possible in cards, how about in tokens? It would be cool to have some of the Morph head games, except with a more interesting front half than a Grey Ogre.

The normal rules can’t do that. A front has to have the same unique back.

Birthday Trivia Request

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by exclusionmage 37 Comments

I invoke the right of birthday trivia! (Also congrats on 20 years as head designer) Can you tell me anything about the card "grey ogres"? Failing that, how about trivia on orcs and/or ogres in magic in general?

Grey Ogre has an interesting distinction. It’s a card in Alpha with three other cards that are “strictly better”: Granite Gargoyle, Sedge Troll, and Uthden Troll.Happy Birthday!

Naming Mana-Cost Creatures

New 27 Aug 2023 Asked by duskphoenix 87 Comments

People like to call 2 mana 2/2s "Bears". I'm unaware of other versions of this for different mana values, but if you had to come up with names for 1 mana 1/1s, 3 mana 3/3s, and 4 mana 4/4s, what do you think you'd call them?

R&D calls four mana 3/3’s Hill Giants and three mana 2/2’s Grey Ogres.

Future Rat Expansions

New 17 Mar 2023 Asked by polarisfluff 40 Comments

In the future, could we see a thematic expansion of rats? More death and plague focused like ogre slumlord and other death triggers, or maybe some food synergy since they eat trash. Also, I think they deserve a color expansion into golgari. Edhrec says "This unstoppable growth is often the Golgari's greatest strength and its biggest weakness, as enemies and allies alike are unable to control the actions of the swarm." Unstoppable swarm sure sounds like rats to me! Sincerely, a rat lover.

I can promise more Rats in the future.

Meaning of Tribally Connected

New 24 Jan 2022 Asked by vedalkensamurai 56 Comments

What does "tribally connected" mean? Is that like the Ogres and Demons in Champions block?

It’s like how we connect Werewolf and Wolf in Innistrad sets.

Potential Card Redesign Impact

New 11 Aug 2021 Asked by goblin-haberdasher 49 Comments

Re: the hypothetical 2/3 Ogre for 3: Will Sally not be just as happy - if not happier - that her needed 3-drop actually does something? Adding a minor playable mechanic to this card doesn't require a change to the artist or the art (usually), so Diego and Alex will still be happy as well. The only difference is that now the previous asker is also happy, which is a net positive. (That said, I believe that a vanilla 2/3 for 3 does have a place: in Core Set type products targeted at new players.)

If we took a set about to go to print and just added a little bit of text to every card that was weaker than previously printed cards, the following would happen:- the overall power level goes up; maybe that unbalances things in one or more formats- the set gets wordier; it now becomes harder to process and makes it more complicated to play- we start unnecessarily chewing up design space - we increase unintended interactions (not always a bad thing, but it can be)- it adds additional work What is being asked is not as simple as I think you all realize. We don’t put vanilla and French vanilla cards in sets because we couldn’t think of other things to do with the slot. There are all sorts of things we need to balance, and there are a lot of different kinds of players we cater to. Yes, we can make changes that you personally might like to see (and even then, you might not like the consequences even though you like the idea in the abstract), but it comes at a cost, one which I and the rest of R&D have to care about.

Relevance of 'Weak' Cards

New 11 Aug 2021 Asked by silentslade 78 Comments

'I think “good” and “bad” are poor labels for cards. It implies that some cards are somehow more appropriate to be cards than other cards. Every card serves a purpose. "Let's call them "weak" cards. What I consider a weak or bad card is one that I open in a pack, and it spends the rest of its life outside of a deck. Living it's existence as a non game piece. Never even considerable for a deck.Over the years I've accumulated too many of these. And would like to see less of them. Especially since I see many many versions of the same weak cards over and over. It would be nice to see at least playable alternatives of decent (not necessarily strong) cards. Maybe with relevant creature types, or fun mechanics instead. Even if it's a weak card, if it has a set mechanic it can be more useful than just yet another vanilla 2/3 for 3. A 2/3 surveil 1 would be just much more fun, even if it's not necessarily good. I don't know if I'm making any sense.

Let me try approaching this from a different vantage point. We print a new common 2/3 vanilla creature. To you it is worthless. You have a lot of 2/3 vanilla creatures, another one adds nothing to the game of Magic for you. It’s a waste of cardboard. Now Sally is excited. She has an Ogre deck and this slots perfectly at the three slot for her deck. Diego is also excited. This card was illustrated by his favorite artist and he can’t wait to get it signed at an upcoming convention that the artist will be at. Alex is excited because they have a “ladies looking left” deck and this is a female Ogre looking left. Should we take away a card that makes Sally, Diego and Alex happy, just because it doesn’t make you happy? You are part of a community, and part of that comes the responsibility to accept that not everything is made to cater to you. Yes, some cards should excite you. We want you to have enough cards that you enjoy that you have many options on what you can play, but every card doesn’t need to.

Coincidental Exodus Card Acronyms

New 16 Feb 2021 Asked by yellowfoliage 46 Comments

I've wondered about this for more than 20 years now: back in the day when jokey card names were more common (Telim'Tor et al) was it intentional that Exodus contained MoM and PoP (Mind over Matter and Price of Progress)?

Not that I was aware of, but maybe.

Arena Cards in Paper

New 01 Oct 2019 Asked by myfavouritehobby 26 Comments

What are the odds of the arena exclusive "Arena New Player Experience" cards getting printed in paper in the future (ie Ogre Painbringer, Goblin Gang Leader)

There’s a chance for all the ones in color pie.

Red Card Mechanics

It’s a bend.

Ravnica Rat Theme Absence

New 23 Jan 2019 Asked by complexbeast 41 Comments

Why wasn't there a black creature that cared about Rats like previous ravnica blocks (Ratcatcher and Ogre Slumlord)? I still hope there is one in WAR!

One of the problems with a return (especially a third return) is there are so many things expected in the set and limited amount of room to fit it all in.

Sure.

Card Design Evolution

New 09 Oct 2018 Asked by wirehog 75 Comments

I may be misremembering, but it seems like in Magic's earlier days, there was a tendency not to print a card that was a strictly better version of another card in the same set. Lately, this happens pretty routinely, especially with removal (e.g., Price of Fame >> Deadly Visit in GRN). Has there been a philosophical shift on this and what were the reasons for the change? I get the need to limit premium removal in limited, but it seems like a deeper philosophical change.

Red's Color Pie

Yep. Red still can punish people for nonbasic lands; it just needs to be a red punishment.

Treasonous Ogre Analysis

Is treasonous ogre a bend or a break and can we see more in this in red.

It’s a bend. Red is suppose to get one shots of mana not repeatable sources.
