Speaking of Eyes, was giving Beholders the subtype ever considered?

It was, but very briefly.

Beholders versus Ilithids

New 05 Jun 2022 Asked by tanz423 31 Comments

Why did beholders get their own creature type but not ilithids?

A line has to be drawn somewhere, and it was in between those two. Beholders are one of the most iconic unique creatures of D&D.

Multi-color Avatar of Me

New 10 Apr 2022 Asked by blood-fish-god 32 Comments

Hypothetically, if someone with more than 2 eyes was playing Avatar of Me, could it be more than 2 colors?

Sure. You should see when Beholders play it. : )

Beyonder or Beholder Token

New 22 Mar 2022 Asked by ff7hero-blog 56 Comments

Love the article today, MaRo. It's always nice to hear you talk about Unsets. I did notice that your Sword of Dungeons and Dragons section mentioned a "Beyonder" token, which I assume should be Beholder?

Oops. Yes, it was a Beholder token. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll get it fixed in the article.

Influence of D&D's Beholders

New 22 Dec 2021 Asked by deyuil 29 Comments

Were Evil Eye of Orms-By-Gore and Evil Eye of Urborg intended to be based on Dungeons and Dragons' Beholders?

I’d say influenced by. They were clearly not Beholders.

Eeriness of Timely Requests

New 27 Oct 2021 Asked by bcrazy713 35 Comments

With y'all working on sets 2 years before release does it ever get eerie when you start getting request for things that re literally about to release? (ex. "Eye horror" , I feel like a lot of ask for this came up with the beholders and the "kraken, leviathan, octopus,..." Has come up alot recently too)

It happens so often, I’m pretty used to it.

Beholders in AFR

New 22 Aug 2021 Asked by haru-n-harkel 37 Comments

Does the inclusion of beholders in AFR mean that the HotR card Kharis & the Beholder will be updated for it's owners from "Legendary Creature - Dragon Eye Wizard" to "Legendary Creature - Dragon Beholder Wizard"?

Hero’s of the Realms cards aren’t real cards, so they don’t get errata.

Creature Types in AFR

New 22 Aug 2021 Asked by hiygamer 31 Comments

Why did Beholders and a lot of other traditional D&D creatures get their own creature types for AFR, but Illithids didn't?

It was a combination of equity of that word and whether or not it cleanly fit within an existing creature type.

Rationale for Beholder Count in AFR

New 22 Aug 2021 Asked by titania776 42 Comments

Do you know why AFR only has 2 beholders? One common and one mythic. It seems interesting to make a new creature type just to put 2 in the only place they can feasibly show up in. Im mostly asking from a set design prospective and not to criticize.

D&D has a lot of monsters that we wanted to show off. We have no problem having new creature types if they’re exciting, even if in small numbers.

Future for Beholders in Sets

New 18 Aug 2021 Asked by dungeonmastersconsortium 45 Comments

I absolutely loved seeing beholders in the most recent set. What are the chances we get to see beholders in worlds other than Forgotten Realms?

I doubt we’ll see them outside of D&D worlds.

Evil Eye of Orms-By-Gore Errata

New 02 Aug 2021 Asked by terribadart-blog 35 Comments

Evil Eye of Orms-By-Gore was explicitly meant to be a Beholder since Legends was based on a D&D campaign. Will Evil Eye get errata now that Beholder is a creature type?

It was not explicitly meant to be a beholder. The legendary creatures were the things copied from the role-playing game.

Beholders' Mode of Transportation

New 29 Jun 2021 Asked by scotmartin 52 Comments

Why don't Beholders fly in Magic? How do they get around?

They levitate at ground level, so we decided they don’t “fly” in an evasive sense.

Beholders and Eye Type

New 24 Jun 2021 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 54 Comments

Was it ever considered to give Beholders the Eye creature type

It was talked about, but, in the end, having a lot of eyes does not make you an Eye.

Beholder Type in Magic

Would a Beholder in Magic get its own creature type, or use Eye?

I assume it would get its own type. Having a lot of eyes doesn’t make you sn Eye.

D&D in Magic

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by darkstar128 52 Comments

"We’ve been trying to be careful about crossing the streams too much. I do admit Zendikar is the most D&D world we have." yet D&D gets full access to Ravnica as a setting now. I for one want illithids and beholders in mtg.

I think for that to ever happen, it would have to be a D&D branded Magic set.

Beholder Creature in Zendikar

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by verygoodtom 31 Comments

Any chance of a beholder-style creature in Zendikar? perhaps a return to the "eye" creature type?

We’ve been trying to be careful about crossing the streams too much. I do admit Zendikar is the most D&D world we have.
