Shapeshifter

Hilarious Gameplay

New 26 May 2024 Asked by ludosgd 0 Comments

Happy birthday Mark!!!
In a recent game of commander with my friends, something truly hilarious happened. I was able to copy an Ancient Golden Dragon with my Vesuvan Shapeshifter, which had already four +1/+1 counters. It was a really big play, since I'd be able to establish defenses with a single attack. So I attack, deal combat damage, roll the d20 and... natural 1. We all laughed for minutes straight.
I create one 1/1 token, pass the turn, and in three consequent attacks, I get defeated.
It was hilarious and one of the best games I played in recent times :')

Changeling Search Mechanic

New 19 May 2024 Asked by randomfusilier2 25 Comments

Talk on Kindred cards started my mind back to an old question I had. Was the intention for Kindred Shapeshifter cards with Changeling that any search your deck type card with any creature type search parameter could retrieve them?

Yes.

Double Faced Card Rules

New 11 May 2024 Asked by tiwaztyrsfist 18 Comments

Hi Mark, can the rules currently support multiple Double Faced cards with the same front but different backs, OR multiple Double Faced cards with different fronts and the same backs (not like a meld, but identical back faces)?

As an example, say 4 cards that were the same card on the front, but 4 different alternate versions on the back, like a D&D druid with 4 different wild shape variations, OR 4 cards that were different creatures on the front, but the back were all the same legendary shapeshifter (Ovar, Lazav, etc), and the backs were identical.

The rules can’t support same front differential back, but can, hypothetically, support different fronts, same back.

Changeling Mechanic Query

If when a card with changeling that doesn’t have the type “Shapeshifter” physically printed on it.

If. It would require a new flavor for changeling.

Confusing Card Traits

New 05 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 23 Comments

If/when a card that wouldn’t be a shapeshifter if it didn’t have changeling (as in it isn’t listed in the type line)

I don’t understand what it is you’re asking for.

Vorthos Shapeshifter Logic

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 24 Comments

Re: A shapeshifter impersonating someone counting for Vorthos... It's still *about* the character right? Doesn't even feel like that much of a technicality to me. It's the time a shapeshifter impersonated them.

It counts.

Artistic Representation

New 21 Oct 2023 Asked by miztickow 28 Comments

If a shapeshifter appears in art as a character you name with Vorthos, does it count for Vorthos? (The Moment appears as Rose Tyler.)

That’s a question for you inner Vorthos. Technically, the character “appears” in art, so you can use it, but you know it’s just a technicality, so this choice is yours.

Graveyard Order History

New 12 Jun 2023 Asked by judge-natedogg 39 Comments

Tempest Block was indeed the last block to print cards that cared about graveyard order - Tempest had Corpse Dance and Phyrexian Grimoire, and Stronghold had Volrath's Shapeshifter (Exodus did not have any).

That was my memory.

Acornelia Squirrel Criteria

New 28 Nov 2022 Asked by edd97507-blog 28 Comments

Un-question, for Acornelia, does she count squirrel shaped art? For example Sylvan Anthem has a squireel shaped leaf

It has to be an actual Squirrel. If a Shapeshifter/Changeling, it has to currently be in the shape of Squirrel.

Changeling Flavor Tie-In

New 20 Oct 2022 Asked by wertercatt 24 Comments

There are 5 cards with the rules text ‘is every creature type’ including Dr. Julius Jumblemorph from UST. Is this for a flavor > function reason where only Shapeshifters can have the actual Changeling keyword?

Changeling has a flavor tie-in.

Meet & Greet Art Rules

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by centurosplaneswalker 70 Comments

Does Meet & Greet "Sisay" count as having Sisay in the art for Vorthos, even though it's clearly a paid actor?
On a related note, does Jilt count as having Yawgmoth or Hannah in the art? Because, as per the flavor text, that's *not* Gerrard's Hannah.

Having a character either dressed up as that character or a shapeshifter shifting into that character’s form passes the bar for visually referencing the character. The main idea of Vorthos is to let Vorthoses have fun making a deck flavored around a character.

Surprise Party Tokens

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by noahdoestechthings 42 Comments

To answer the Surprise Party question, there are four shapeshifter tokens with changeling. One of which is a 3/2 that comes from Black Market Connections.

Surprise party requires using actual, official, Magic-printed Robot Clown tokens, but Changeling tokens do fit those requirements.

Clown Robot Tokens

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by elmdormesdoram 36 Comments

Surprise Party asks you to use "printed Clown Robot tokens". This refers to the creature types on the tokens, so can I use Shapeshifter tokens with changeling?

Does that exist as a printed token?

Squirrel Illustrations

"No, the illustration has to look like a squirrel. A changeling (or shapeshifter) might have the potential to turn into a squirrel, but Acornelia cares that they are pictured as a squirrel."Realmwalker looks like a squirrel for me :)

Let’s ask the expert. Sally?🐿- Not a squirrel.

Acornelia Mechanic Query

New 05 Aug 2022 Asked by fromhades 38 Comments

If I controlled Acornelia, Fashionable Filcher and cast Realmwalker (or any other changeling), would I get an acorn counter from Acornelia's art-matters cast trigger? Realmwalker doesn't *look like* it has a squirrel in the art, but seeing how it *is* a squirrel, I thought it might still work, but I wasn't sure.

No, the illustration has to look like a squirrel. A changeling (or shapeshifter) might have the potential to turn into a squirrel, but Acornelia cares that they are pictured as a squirrel.

Protection from Everything Query

If your opponent has a card with protection from everything, does Escaped Shapeshifter get protection from all colors?

No. It only copies protection specifically from a color(s).

Sliver Planeswalker Likelihood

New 10 Apr 2022 Asked by ambermage 47 Comments

What is the likelihood of ever getting a Sliver Planeswalker?

Low, being that it wouldn’t do what people think it would nor does it make great flavor sense as most Slivers aren’t sapient.Again, Slivers are shapeshifters that share a group mind. Other Slivers can fly when near a Winged Sliver because it’s implanting the knowledge of how to grow wings. There’s no way to share knowledge of having a spark. There’s nothing to shapeshift into to be able to planeswalk.

The Goblin Haberdasher Rule

New 07 Apr 2022 Asked by exarchofsechrima 74 Comments

Hi Mark! Un-rules question! If a character was, hypothetically, wearing strips of metal on her head twisted in the shape of a hat in her artwork, would that count as her wearing a hat for the purpose of Goblin Haberdasher? (I am of course referring to the new SL artwork of Breya, Etherium Shaper.)

A creature is considered to be wearing a hat even if that hat is made out of part of their own body as long as the object is shaped to resemble a hat which Breya’s head covering does do in the new art. As a corollary, a shapeshifter that shapeshifts part of their body into a hat, so they appear to have a hat, is “wearing a hat” for purposes of Goblin Haberdasher.

For Lorwyn races you forgot Shapeshifters (Changelings) which are likely the most popular from Lorwyn.

Shapeshifters are in the middle.
