Hybrid Mana Cards Correlation

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 5 Comments

People have complained about not having enough cards to fill out colors for limited with the switch to play boosters and I've started noticing an uptick in hybrid mana cards which would be a solution to this problem. Is this correlated, or is it just a coincidence that we've recently seen more hybrid and that it helps address this issue?

It’s correlated.

Eldrazi Card and Colourless Devotion

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by temporarynameiwillchange 2 Comments

Could an eldrazi card care about devotion to colourless?

We don’t tend to print many cards with colorless costs, and when we do we use less colorless mana symbols, so affinity for colorless isn’t set up well.

Devotion Variant Possibility

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by raytyger 8 Comments

Do you think there could ever be a devotion variant that cared in some capacity about mana symbols in cards in your graveyard?

Chroma could do that. If we did devotion out of the graveyard it would have an additional word, something like grave devotion.

Trivia About Devotion Mechanic

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by junejulyaugustdecember 7 Comments

Hi Mark! It was my birthday recently :) do you have any fun trivia about the Devotion mechanic?

The devotion mechanic was the redoing of chroma, an ability that first appeared (unnamed) in Future Sight and then (named) in Eventide. Aaron Forsythe originally pitched chroma on a single card in Future Sight, but I held it back because I thought it was a whole mechanic. We had high hopes for chroma, but the audience wasn’t too excited by it. Then when we were making original Theros, we needed a mechanic showing a connection to the Gods, and design team member Zac Hill pitched bring back chroma. We cleaned it up (now only caring about the mana cost of permanents on the battlefield) and renamed it, and it went on to be a beloved mechanic. It goes to show how much execution of a mechanic matters. Happy Birthday!

I have faith it will eventually happen.

Avacyn Birthday Trivia

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by sapphicvalkyrja 8 Comments

I would like to invoke the rite of birthday trivia to request something about my favorite character, Avacyn!

From time to time we have what we call “brain to print” cards where a cards gets to print in the exact form it was designed. Avacyn, Angel of Hope was one such card. I made it in early vision design, and it never changed (I think they tried different mana costs, but ended back at where I started).Happy Birthday!

Potential Gift Ability Tweak

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by quantext 2 Comments

Could the gift mechanic work as a triggered ability instead of something solely done on cast? Such as "when this creature attacks, you may Gift a Food."

I don’t know if the current version of gift can do that, but as it’s a cost, I assume we could tweak things to make that work. Just a hunch though. I’m not the Rules Manager.

More Large Creatures Request

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by diazepam666 5 Comments

HELLO.
I like creatures with big mana costs and I found BLB a bit underwhelming.
Please make more fatty!

Worlds ebb and flow. Bloomburrow is more focused on the animalfolk which are definitionally small. There will be other worlds that lean more towards larger creatures.

Black Angels vs White Demons

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by dissociativehusky 7 Comments

Wizards has introduced almost 30 black angels, even though they're usually described as manifestations of white mana. I don't have a problem with this except yall have only made 5 white demons, 3 of which are from New Capenna! Any thoughts on why, and can I get a maybe on more white angels in the future?

I can promise more white Angels.

If/when enchantments that have different abilities depending ong what they enchant? ex. Enchant a creature gives buff, enchant nonland non creature gives something, enchant land add additional mana

If. We’ve made auras that change based on who controls the creature.

Power Creep and Format Change

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by caitsith4 9 Comments

Concerning power creep, there may be a comparison and distinction to be made between distorting a format and adding relevant cards to a format. If a card is relevant, it shows up in decks, right? Maybe even a lot of decks. That's good for a format-relevant product. Otherwise, why even make the product? But then what is the delineating mark between format change (good) and format distortion (bad)? One could argue that Serra Angel is an example of format change. Arguably obsolete, nobody is really objecting to the card's irrelevance in eternal formats.So. What is that dividing line? Is formst chsnge just 'distortion over time'? I would argue that healthful change is oft misperceived as power creep, but it took a lot of cards in Commander before we figured out that '2 MV ramp and repeating value' were the prime culprits in accelerating the casual format beyond its 'battlecruiser Magic' roots.I'm not making a big argument one way or another, just trying to stimulate a brain or two..

For starters you’re not using “power creep” as I use it on this blog, but for the sake of saying the same thing for the tenth time, I understand you mean the increase of cards impacting older environments. You bring up the other thing we haven’t been talking about. Card influx talks in neutral terms. Add N relevant cards and impact the environment a particular amount. The faster you add N, the quicker it changes. The sets designed for older formats aren’t adding in cards neutrally though. They are adding in suites of cards built around particular mechanical themes. Adding in whole suites of cards changes environments more quickly as the threshold to make a deck theme relevant gets hit more quickly. That’s the other big impact of designing for a format. It causes you to impact it faster as you are designing whole swaths of mechanical pieces, not just cards. That’s very relevant to the topic at hand.

Keywording Mana Type Expenditure

Has keywording "you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast it" been discussed?

It has.

Templating Mana Creation Cards

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by eternalcheechako 2 Comments

any idea why cards that can make colorless OR colored mana (like nightshade dryad) are templated with one ability for colorless, and one for colored?

The other way to write it would be “T: Add W, U, B, R, G or C” which would make give it a five-color color identity and make the card very hard to play in Commander.

Clarifying Modifier Rules

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by nootnooter34 7 Comments

Hello Mr Rosewater,
Un-rules question for you:Modular Monstrosity has the ability, "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you have five seconds to choose a keyword you haven't chosen for a card named Modular Monstrosity today that's been printed on a creature card."There is also a ruling that reads, "If the keyword has a modifier, such as a mana cost or a number, you must choose a modifier that’s been printed."
My question is, can you choose a keyword that has been printed on a creature with a modifier that's only been printed on a noncreature card. Cumulative Upkeep has appeared on many creatures so is a valid keyword. Can I name "Cumulative Upkeep-Add {R}" which has only been seen on the noncreature Braids of Fire?
Thank you in advance

You have to choose a mechanic and a modifier that’s appeared on a creature.

Misinterpretation of Card Costs

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by theuninvitedghost 1 Comments

“The biggest problem is that we have to cost cards with whole mana symbols (other than Un-sets, we don’t do ½) and many abilities simply aren’t worth a whole mana by themselves.” Did you miss-read this Question Mark’s question about vanilla creatures as French vanilla?

I didn’t misread it. They were asking why card #A, a vanilla creature, and Card #B, a creature with the same stats but with rules text cost the same. The answer is the rules text usually isn’t worth a full mana, so removing it doesn’t make the creature one cheaper.

Challenges with Vanilla Stats

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by magicruinssandwich 2 Comments

As a Jasmine player, I was wondering, are we ever going to get more vanilla creatures printed better statlines than creatures with effects ?

The biggest problem is that we have to cost cards with whole mana symbols (other than Un-sets, we don’t do ½) and many abilities simply aren’t worth a whole mana by themselves.

Keywording Impulse Potential

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by bullfrawgs 2 Comments

Has there been discussion of keywording Impulse? It's a lot of words to be able to shave, but also there are at least 4 fiddly bits that change on a card by card basis (your deck or opponents, cast of play, until end of turn or until the end of your next turn, do you get mana fixing)

It has been talked about many times.

Purpose of 'Landfall' Term

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by noahmatthews1399 6 Comments

I've been loving the innovations as of late to have fewer words/characters on cards such as the change to mana value and enters. What was the purpose of making each card say Landfall? I can not see the benefit if they will all include the reminder text anyway.

Ability words allow people to better group similar cards together and gives people vocabulary to talk about it.

Future of Hybrid Commons

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by trainmastergt 13 Comments

Hi Mark!
With Karlov Manor and Bloomburrow, we’ve now seen two cycles of common creature cards that can be played with Hybrid mana in sets that otherwise don’t have a major hybrid theme. Does this mean that we’re going to see an increase in the number of hybrid commons in the future?

Common hybrid cards have proven to be a valuable tool in helping to raise as-fan of certain themes for limited, so I do think we’ll see it used again.

Questions Regarding Offspring Tokens

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by ggcrono 15 Comments

As the authority on un-rules, I must ask you: Since Offspring tokens are described as copies of the original card, if you use Claire D'Loon to return one to your hand, can you cast it as though it were the original, and, being a copy, does it also have Offspring?

It can be cast from your hand as it has a mana cost. My gut is it must have offspring, but not 100% sure on that.
