Future of Myr and Omenpaths

Hey mark! I was wondering if we can expect myr to spread out using the omenpaths? (I love them so much) Thanks for reading this!

I hope to see more Myr.

Concern About Creature Type Changes

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by wildcardgamez 21 Comments

Re: drawing the line for humanoid type changes. Doesn't that mean Naga shouldn't be changed? They aren't an original mtg name. Also, I feel like getting rid of types just because the fantasy races were made by you guys and not storytellers of the past is a bit sad. There are a lot of creatures original to magic that I hope don't go anywhere, like Brushwaggs and Atogs which could be beasts, and Myr or Sliths that could be constructs, or an extreme that I doubt will happen, Eldrazi to horrors. It feels more special.

We’re not getting rid of original creatures we made up. Those will remain. We’re just being consistent with how we treat made-up animal humanoids. Again, a change we made in the late 1990’s.

New 17 May 2024 Asked by tropicalscream 29 Comments

mark i know you cant tell me but let ne put out my desire for more Myr cards (especially en masse) in products like MH3 or commander products one offs or places like Thunder Junction etc especially bc given how they're very specifically flavored

Myr are quite popular, so we’ll have to find places for more.

Myr Hybrid Costs

If/When: Myr with a hybrid colored cost.

If, but it could happen.

Myr Creation

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 39 Comments

Who originally created the Myr as a concept? Or is that not really attributable?

I attribute it to Brady Dommermuth. The set originally had Gnomes, and Brady didn’t want to do them, so I said, “Okay make me a cute artifact creature.”

Myr Alignment

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 36 Comments

Do Myrs truly have an alignment? I know they were built by Memnarch, but after that they kinda just hung out like lil robot goblins, until the Phyrexians, where they were... active dissedents? But other than some cards it just seems like they were just useful creatures for the Rebels to utilize.

The Myr work for whoever will allow them to be useful.

Mana Production Comparison

New 05 May 2024 Asked by aalgot 43 Comments

“Lands produce colorless mana at a rate over three times higher than artifacts”But lands also often produce colored mana whereas when an artifact produces mana it is almost invariably colorless.

Banners, cameos, cluestones, crystals, diamonds, eggs, keyrunes, lockets, monuments, moxes, Myr, obelisks, signets, and talismans beg to differ. And those are just the cycles. : )

Choosing Objects for Ignacio's Marvels

New 02 May 2024 Asked by mistershinyobject 39 Comments

How were the objects chosen for Ignacio of Myra's Marvels? And would you give me your blessing to let me name "crossbow" for my crossbow-themed deck? I feel like it's strictly worse than any of the listed options.

I made a list and then saw how many cards had the objects. The top ones made the list. You have my permission to use “crossbow”.

I do think it’s possible.

Acorn Cards Query

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 25 Comments

Is any part of Fluros of Myra’s Marvels actually acorn in ability or is it only acorn because it has partner?

The latter. I agreed to only put partner on acorn cards. The rest of the cycle was acorn, so it seemed odd for it to be the only one without partner.

Drive to Work Gratitude

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by iwriterobots 36 Comments

Hey Mark! I've been steadily making my way through your Drive to Work podcast. Just finished up episode 926 ("Myr") and it means the world to me. The Myr in New Phyrexia block are what got me into magic. Just wanted to pass along a big thanks, I love the Myr so much, and I was excited to learn about their design origin. :)

Happy to hear you’re enjoying the podcast.

Un-cards Eternal-legality

New 07 Mar 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 62 Comments

Krark's Other Thumb is the only silver-border/acorn card in my Myra the Magnificent Commander deck and I just wanna say I would be super-happy if it (and other UN-cards) were errata'd to non-acorn.

What other silver border cards are people interesting in seeing become Eternal-legal?

Poison in Commander

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 59 Comments

Re: PoisonIt has a problem in Commander (or any other free-for-all format) where normally only one player is using it, so the other players aren't contributing to their win condition (unlike damage.) So the best case scenario for the poison player tends to be eliminating one opponent quickly before gassing out/becoming the archenemy and getting eliminated. Are there any plans to address this in future Commander products, perhaps by introducing creatures with toxic and myriad, and/or cards that goad creatures and give them toxic?

I’m not sure there’s a great need to make poison better in Commander.

Hardy of Myra's Rules

New 07 Jan 2024 Asked by jimmycomments 17 Comments

Hi Mark, I have a couple of rules questions about Hardy of Myra's Marvels if I may:

How does he work with adventures? Does he only trigger when you cast the creature part if that's the part with flavour text?

How does he work with DFCs? Does he only count the front side (or the side you're playing if it's an MDFC)?

Thank you!

Hardy counts the part of the spell you are casting, so yes, you only count the flavor text if you cast the creature portion with flavor text. With a DFC, you only count the side you are casting.

Naming Mechanic Clarification

New 06 Jan 2024 Asked by rockon101000 32 Comments

If I control Katerina of Myra's Marvels and have named H, and cast the Haduken version of lightning bolt, do I make the cat? Thank you!

Yes. That version of the card is called Haduken. Note, you don’t get a cat if you named L.

Card Abilities and Rules

New 03 Jan 2024 Asked by truthposts 24 Comments

Hi Mark, I see a fair number of cards with effects like Myr Welder or Trazyn the Infinite that get the activated abilities of other cards in zones. Why don't we have effects that get other kinds of abilities of other cards in zones, is that due to developmental concerns, or complexity, or could there be space to explore there in the future?

It has to do with how the rules work. Activated abilities are clean and 100% of the cases work. If you want to get keyword abilities, for instance, you need to spell out which ones you are getting.

Common Mechanics Terminology

New 26 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 38 Comments

Is there a term R&D uses to describe cards like “bear with sets mechanic” or “mind rot with sets mechanic” or “cancel with sets mechanic” or the myriad of other examples of (blank) with sets mechanic? I’ve started keeping a list of cards that get the “with sets mechanic” treatment, and I’m curious if there’s a term for all the “root” cards.

“With set mechanic” is basically what we say.

Phyrexian Mana Redesign

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by zackdes44 55 Comments

I understand Phyrexian Mana causes a myriad of issues in a number of formats, but I'm a big fan. Not necessarily of the overly-powerful cards since I don't play competitive, but for the flexibility it provides and some of the interesting design space that seems available. Do you think we'll see a 'fixed' version, like with cascade/discover or infect/poison, that could be more broadly used and not specifically linked to phyrexians

Phyrexia: All Will Be One and March of the Machine did experiment with using Phyrexian mana in different ways, such as having loyalty as an additional cost and using it in activation costs.

Creature Type Poll

New 04 Dec 2023 Asked by lylethebloody 51 Comments

Mark,

I wanted to double back with the results of the ask you put out regarding which creature types are in need of some love for our decks. Just like in previous years, I only counted the first 3 creature types if people put multiple types in (I don't have ALL day to do this...) and I only counted creature types that have cards for them in Magic - requesting new creature types is for another ask. With all that in mind...

Dwarves came in first this year with 6 votes! There was then a 5-way tie for second at 4 between Aetherborn, Druids, Myr, Skeleton, and Treefolk. Werewolves and Constructs each got 3 votes.

The people have spoken!

Thanks for doing this.

Gnomes and Myr

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by polluxr 24 Comments

Hiya, I've been loving LCI and surprised at how much I enjoyed the gnomes and it occurred to me to ask if there was ever a point where they were myr? Now that New Phyrexia/Mirrodin is phased out, I feel like having myr on another plane could be interesting (if multiple planes can develop ornithopters, why not myr?) and the Ixalan gnomes felt to me pretty similar (small useful guys). (I still want more gnomes! And waiting for more Runes like Kaldheims too)

The Gnomes were Gnomes from the first version of the file.
