Artificial Evolution Limit

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by cssbb21-blog 58 Comments

Can Artificial Evolution target text that is technically a creature type but is used in a different context? I thought so, as long as it's not rules text or reminder text. I.E. can I use Artificial Evolution to change the text on Avatar of Me "Avatar of Me's color is the color of your ouphes?" And if so, would that now mean that if I had two Brown Ouphes in play, Avatar of Me would be Brown? And if I had a Faeburrow Elder in play and tap it, would I be "forced" to add one Brown Mana?

It can only change words being used in the context of being a creature type.

Wilds of Eldraine Praise

New 21 Oct 2023 Asked by nemesis-cat 31 Comments

Good day Maro! Please give high 5’s again to everyone for Wilds of Eldraine! It’s been a month and we are still running draft at my LGS because it’s just so fun. One of my favorite aspects of WOE is the addition of new creatures in the Wilds, satyrs and ouphes. I love how they feel natural to Eldraine, we just never seen them because we never went to the Wilds! Of course with Omen Paths new creatures could show up anywhere, Troyan on Eldraine, but it feels very forced and less organic. Now with your teaser of LCI I see the addition of gnomes to Ixalan and cheered! I really hope this trend continues in the future. It adds so much fun when returning to a plane and gives me hope that we might see types with less support finally getting the love they deserve! Thanks for all you do.

You’re welcome. I too am happy to see more Gnomes.

Motown-Inspired Basic Lands

New 01 Apr 2022 Asked by krinstranger 62 Comments

Is it true that we're going to get Motown-inspired basic lands? I'm looking forward to "The Mountain High Enough (To Keep Me From Getting To You)"

It’s not just basic lands. Streets of New Capenna has an entire Motown bonus sheet. Some other cards you’ll see - I Heard It Through the Grapevinelasher Kudzu, (My Walls and) Papa Were Rollin’ Stones, You Can’t Hurry Lovestruck Beast, My (Massacre) Girl, Dancing in the (Tin) Street (Market), and Tears of a Brown (Ouphe).

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 71 Comments

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

High Beeble Scale Creature Types

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 53 Comments

Why are so many creature types that are unique to magic high on the beeble scale? Spike (7), Slith (7), Beeble (10), Atog (7), Bringer (9), Brushwagg (8), Homarid (8), Lhurgoyf (7), Licid (9 1/2), Monger (9), Nephilim (8), Noggle (8), Ouphe (9), Phelddagrif (9 1/2). These original creatures were a huge reason I fell in love with earlier magic and I feel like you guys have basically abandoned most of them in favor of more generic creatures.

Two things:1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic. 2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe).

Glimmer Bairn and Atogs

New 01 Jun 2021 Asked by cairnwanderer 38 Comments

Why wasn't Glimmer Bairn an Atog? It's a 1/2 that eats for +2/+2, and clearly Atogs are more iconic and popular than Ouphes.

It’s a riff on Gilder Barn, an Ouphe.

Discussion about Printed Cards

New 18 May 2021 Asked by sniffnoy 39 Comments

Some of the cards you say in your column today didn't make it to print did, in fact, make it to print! Butterfly became Whip-Spine Drake; Spellwild Dog became Spellwild Ouphe; Boss Scragnoth became Quagnoth. Also, Sneaky Goblin seems a lot like Street Wraith, and Veiled Clone like Shapeshifter's Marrow. Also the green common kicker/convoke creature did make it, as Kavu Primarch; Sprout Swarm was in addition. Also, one of the vanishing cycle you say got cut did stay, as Lost Auramancers.

Leprechaun Creature Type Correction

New 13 Dec 2020 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 34 Comments

"Ouphe if a few, but if enough, we’d talk about Leprechaun." FYI, Aisling Leprechaun has gone back to being a Faerie, as it was printed. (Unlike Shelkin Brownie, which is printed as a Faerie, but in Gatherer as an Ouphe.)

Thanks. I forgot it got changed to Faerie.

Leprechaun as a Creature Type

New 13 Dec 2020 Asked by exclusionmage 30 Comments

Would a leprechaun in mtg be creature type: ouphe, or would it be a new creature type?

It depends how many of them there were. Ouphe if a few, but if enough, we’d talk about Leprechaun.

Birthday Trivia on Small Races

New 14 Oct 2020 Asked by lariatstoboy 44 Comments

Hello Mark! Today is my birthday and I was wondering if I can ask for some bday trivia? Specifically, can I get some trivia on kithkin, ouphes, or any other small race in mtg?

Kitchen Finks, one of the most famous Ouphes started as Heather’s Chipmunk. Sean Fletcher, one of Shadowmoor’s designers, was asked by his wife if he would make a chipmunk card for her, which he did. That chipmunk would eventually become an Ouphe.Happy Birthday!

Ouphes Vs Beebles

Hi, ouphes on beeble scale?

A 9. I think if we did an Ouphe again, it might get consolidated creature type-wise.

Creature Type Tournament

New 06 Dec 2015 Asked by shinkari-deactivated20181107 23 Comments

You should do a best one off creature type tournament. Like, ouphe vs lhurgoyf or something like that.

I’m going to do a lot of Head-to-Heads so I’ll keep it in mind.

Four-Color Legends Query

New 25 Jan 2014 Asked by normandean 57 Comments

I've been looking at what creature types currently appear in only four colors, and here's what I've found so far: Un-white: Drone Efreet Lizard Snake Ooze, Un-blue: Boar Berserker Centaur Kavu Samurai Wolf, Un-black: Kithkin Rhino, Un-red: Archon Frog Fungus Hag Ouphe Plant, and Un-green: Dwarf Gargoyle Mercenary Vampire. Obviously Un-black is the tough one here, but any of those get the ol' creative juices flowing as far as four-color legends?

I’m answering mostly to show off your great list. I’m not sure creature type is the thing in the way of more four color creatures.
