Request for More Hybrid Dragons

New 29 May 2024 Asked by zanmor 51 Comments

I'd like to request some more dragons that are crossed with other fantasy creatures. My top 3: Dragon Unicorn, Dragon Lammasu, Dragon Phelddagrif. Thanks!

We’ve been making more Dragons that are also other creature types over the last few years, so I think more will happen.

Phelddagrif Origin Story

New 22 May 2024 Asked by boymeetsanime 8 Comments

Hi Mark! I hope this allowed, my friend who isn't on Tumblr has asked me to invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia on his behalf. Could you share any insights concerning Phelddagrif? Thanks in advance!

Phelddagrif was an inside joke in R&D. It’s an anagram of “Garfield Ph.D.” referencing a rule in the early days that whenever PR talked about Richard, they always called him Dr. Richard Garfield or Richard Garfield, Ph.D. R&D also used to joke about how long before they’d have to make a purple hippo. All this resulted in the card Phelddagrif.Happy Birthday to your friend!

Why is Questing Phelddagrif not legendary?

There are many of them, I guess.

Future Phelddagrifs

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by stormcrow13 22 Comments

If the no vanity card rule only applies to Wizard's employees does that mean we can get more Phelddagrifs? Its not like Richard Garfield doesn't already have a card with his name and face on it.

Vanity cards already printed are grandfathered in, so it wasn’t stopping more Phelddagrifs.

Phelddagrif Art Story

New 10 Sep 2022 Asked by lookingupanddown 41 Comments

What's the story behind your Secret Lair Questing Phelddagriff art?

They asked me to do it. I said yes. As is my artistic process, I drew a whole bunch until I found one I liked and turned in that one.

Hope for Phelddagrif

"Old vanity cards are grandfathered in. New cards can refer to them."Does this mean there's still hope that we may someday see a third phelddagrif?

There is hope.

Phelddagrif Illustration Compensation

New 28 Mar 2022 Asked by mynameisfourteen 51 Comments

"I’ll draw Magic cards when asked and my fee is the cheapest in the business."

You've said publicly that you rather than cashing the $1 check that you got paid for illustrating Look At Me I'm The DCI, you framed it with the artwork. Did get a similar financial compensation for your Secret Lair Questing Phelddagrif? Regardless of how much you were paid, did you accept that payment?

I didn’t get paid for my Phelddagrif drawing.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 71 Comments

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

High Beeble Scale Creature Types

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 53 Comments

Why are so many creature types that are unique to magic high on the beeble scale? Spike (7), Slith (7), Beeble (10), Atog (7), Bringer (9), Brushwagg (8), Homarid (8), Lhurgoyf (7), Licid (9 1/2), Monger (9), Nephilim (8), Noggle (8), Ouphe (9), Phelddagrif (9 1/2). These original creatures were a huge reason I fell in love with earlier magic and I feel like you guys have basically abandoned most of them in favor of more generic creatures.

Two things:1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic. 2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe).

New Phelddagrif Creature

Could I get a "Maybe : )" on a new Phelddagrif creature in Unfinity? You've said in the past that we'd probably only see them in silver border cause creative thinks they're too silly for black border.

Maybe. : )

Token Generator Creation Concerns

New 23 Mar 2021 Asked by rakdos-cultists 98 Comments

Hey Mark I know this is a common complaint In multiple play groups that play eternal formats that a couple of older token generators don't have have physical tokens outside of proxy or home made examples being Phelddagrifs 1/1 hippos, dune-broods 1/1 sand creature tokens, and boris devilbloons 1/1 minor demons. Have there been any thought about doing a spellbook type release to fill up these missing tokens?

I can pass along the request.

Uncertainty of Phelddagrif's Cycle

If or when? A cycle of phelddagrifs?

If. I’m not even sure we’ll get another Phelddagrif let alone a cycle.

Release of Unreleased Tokens

New 19 May 2020 Asked by wutamautoromram 218 Comments

May you please release an official set of all of unreleased tokens? For example, Penumbra Bobcat, Apocalypse Angel, Questing Phelddagrif, etc. These would be so sweet! I realize this would not be a huge money maker but there are many cube builders / old school players out there who'd really appreciate this :)

Anyone else interested in this product?

High Beeble Scale Creatures

New 19 May 2020 Asked by koriko99 64 Comments

Why are phelddagrif so high on the beeble scale? I miss having unique and creative creatures like this more often.

Like Beebles, a flying purple hippo is considered a bit too silly for black border. As I often state, I think the game can handle more humor.

Trivia for Birthday

Rubinia Soulsinger’s art is of a former Wizards employee named Carol who used to run the sales teams. Happy Birthday!

Phelddagrif Rarity

Where are phelddagrifs on the beeble scale? (The beeble scale is based on your opinion, right?)

The Scales are based on my best guess at things based on my knowledge of many factors. Phelddagrifs are a 9 ½.

Creative Restrictions

New 24 Nov 2018 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 58 Comments

if nevinyrall is allows to circumvent the vanity rulings because it is "grandfathered in", why not phelddagrifs? the name doesn't stand out as an obvious anagram like nevinyrall, they have a neat mechanical identity, and they would be a nice addition to a less grimdark setting. side note: the term "grandfathered in" has a dubious history and it's worth looking it up if you're not aware. also please make 1/1 hippo tokens i need them.

We haven’t stopped making Phelddagrifs because of the name. The creative team has just dubbed flying purple hippos to be a bit silly for black border.
