Creature Type Consolidation

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by cle-guy 74 Comments

With Naga and now Viashino on the chopping block what creature type is next? Why would homarids, for instance, survive? Or Noggles?

There is a move towards creatures types being more known words if such a thing applies.

Bloomburrow vs Lorwyn

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by beechdallama 41 Comments

Not fully educated about bloomburrow but under the impression it's just/similar to lorwyn/shadowmoor, so I must ask, are noggles coming back?

They’re pretty different. Bloomburrow is full of anthropomorphic animals. Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is not that.

Lorwyn Noggles Trivia

New 30 Apr 2023 Asked by bartholious 66 Comments

How about some birthday trivia about the noggles of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor?

When making Eventide, the creative team needed creatures that made sense being enemy colors, so they turned to Celtic mythology. R&D liked to joke about Noggles because one of the designers was Ken Nagle. Happy Birthday!

Creature Type Decision

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by j-waffles 24 Comments

How is it decided whether animal-folk will be given their own creature type or tied to the creature type of their animal? Ex. Leonin have the creature type “cat” but Noggles don’t have the type “donkey”

It’s a combination of is there a flavorful word for it that would excite players and does it feel enough like the animal?

Prominence of Humans in Designs

New 17 Apr 2022 Asked by plumpikethorn 41 Comments

A few times when people ask for more beast people I believe you've mentioned that Humans need to feature prominently since people relate to Humans. Has anything changed with Capenna? Even though Human is technically the most represented singular creature type, the animal people (Cats, Rhinos, Birds, Cephalids, Viashino, Raccoon) outnumber them by a landslide. (Also will we ever see Noggle again?)

Humans want to be on most worlds, but don’t need to be the majority.

Return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor

New 19 Jan 2022 Asked by snowden-is-cold 106 Comments

Out of curiosity, what would be a high level approach for a return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor? Integrating Shadowmoor doesn't seem to be too much of an issue with just using a bit more hybrid and adding Scarecrows as a tribe. However, Eventide seems a bit harder. It has notable amounts of Dwarves, Noggles, Hags and Spirits as half the creatures aren't the eight Lorwyn tribes. Would they just go the way of the Surrakar even they take up a notable amount of one set?

I have a real cool idea how to return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, but I don’t want to share it here because I hope to actually do it one day and want you guys to be surprised if I manage to pull it off.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 71 Comments

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

High Beeble Scale Creature Types

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 53 Comments

Why are so many creature types that are unique to magic high on the beeble scale? Spike (7), Slith (7), Beeble (10), Atog (7), Bringer (9), Brushwagg (8), Homarid (8), Lhurgoyf (7), Licid (9 1/2), Monger (9), Nephilim (8), Noggle (8), Ouphe (9), Phelddagrif (9 1/2). These original creatures were a huge reason I fell in love with earlier magic and I feel like you guys have basically abandoned most of them in favor of more generic creatures.

Two things:1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic. 2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe).
