Symbols and Readability Concerns

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by raytyger 1 Comments

Considering the readability of Reach and Flying, do you think if magic started from the beginning it would try and tie mechanics and abilities to Symbols to help with readability accross the table?

Or do you think there would be to much a risk of consuming text space and the text box becoming poluted.

Symbols quickly get overwhelming to beginners.

Prospects of Conspiracies in UB Set

New 20 Jul 2024 Asked by tmdoublezero 0 Comments

Do you think we could see conspiracies in a UB set or are draft only cards too weird for a product that is also trying to attract new players?

I’ll call it a longshot. It is pretty complex if you’re new to the game.

Influx of new players

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 4 Comments

Hey Mark! I’ve noticed a lot of content creators have mentioned getting into Magic around RTR and/or Innistrad. I also hopped in around that point, which is part of why hearing this a lot has stuck out. Was there something unique in that period that might have had that result? Is it just that we’re in a certain point in a cycle of players? Or is it maybe all just confirmation bias on my part?

There’s no correlative data showing that time period had any spikes beyond the normal slope at the time. Confirmation bias seems likely.

Newbie Struggles with Mechanics

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by caitsith4 13 Comments

I remember when I started, 'rampage' was completely impregnable to me. I could kind of suss out the meaning of cumulative upkeep, but I didn't believe the cost got bigger every turn. It took me months to actually internalize the practical meaning of the upkeep step. I never did figure out what an Interrupt was. :) Don't get me started on Bury! Newbies have it hard no matter what age it is.

Fair. : )

Keyword Difficulty For New Players

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by emrachemicalromance 14 Comments

Why people want new keywords so much? When I was a new player the thing I got more trouble understanding was which keywords did what. I printed a cheat sheet with the evergreen ones but it took me months to memorize them. A card with a full paragraph was usually easier to understand than keyword soup cards that had only one line with 3 keywords.

I think many enfranchised players don’t realize the true barrier of a lot of vocabulary words to newer players, as there was just a lot less evergreen vocabulary words when they entered the game.

On Alternate Names for Lands

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by kernohain-blog 4 Comments

Hi! I loved the newest Planeswalker's Guide to Bloomburrow, but it made me wonder--Is there any restriction on having basic lands with the alternate names mentioned in the article? Eg, Meadows, Pools, Marshes, Hills and Thickets.I'm sure there's some new player grokkability concerns, but has this been discussed before?

We have discussed having basic lands with other names, but we decided the confusion wasn’t worth it.

Simplifying Magic Gameplay

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by novelistparty 10 Comments

hi a friend walked me through a commander game and I liked it and so I got a couple premade decks. I then went to a couple commander nights and I kinda liked it except for the part where I felt like I was a little kid with floaties in the middle of the ocean trying to sing a little song to myself so I wouldn't think about the things that might be lurking just below the surface that I can't see.

Magic is vast and deep and I don't know how I can enjoy playing when there's just too much. I get that the hugeness is part of its staying power, but it feels too big and too much to even approach beyond playing my premade deck and hoping the people at the table won't look down on me for it (which they often do). Even looking up tutorials and guides is overwhelming because each one of them is sharing a *different* tiny slice of material! I haven't felt this baby-beginner starting something new in a very long time (and I say that as someone that is otherwise well-versed in being a terrible beginner at new things).

Is there a way to play magic without getting absolutely lost in the depths? or is that the nature of the beast and I just gotta "git gud"?

The two formats I would suggest are draft or Cube. Both use a much smaller card pool, one you can more easily learn about.

Eternal Planeswalkers Variations

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by brendo 18 Comments

Are the eternal planeswalkers all just reprints? Or can we expect new cards, maybe ones that might appeal better to new players that we introduce to the game with the set?

In the panel, they said it was a mix of new and returning.

Thoughts on Card Draw Formatting

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by jimharbor 5 Comments

Have you ever thought of formatting card draw as a keyword action like scary and surveil? ("Draw 1" as an analogy to "Scry 1?") Why or why not? Thanks for answering our questions sir.

It’s not necessary and would make it harder for new players to understand.

Entrance Products and 'Portal'

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by presidentark 5 Comments

Hi Mark! First up: Chalk me up in the "excited for Duskmourne" crowd. I do think there's a few things that are a bit silly (most notably Tyvar wearing a fanny pack), but mostly it all works and gels together for me. Call it an A-.
Secondly, and my actual question: I'm thrilled at all the starter/entry-level product that was announced today; my experience from trying to teach people the game both on and offline is that starter product has been sorely lacking for a while. But may I ask why the "Portal" name wasn't used for these? One of the products even has the same sort of step-by-step tutorial I remember from learning the game from Portal back in the 90s. Sure new players may not have attachment to *that* name, but the older players probably do and would probably know immediately to point new players at a product with that name if asked what their first purchase should be.

Portal was a failed product from the 90’s. I’m not sure why we’d use that name. It has little cachet.

Gratitude for Clarity Improvement

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by gamma-3 10 Comments

I'd like to express my gratitude for the change to "this " going forward. That was something that confused me as a beginner when it comes to things like copying, and it lines up with the way you have always done tokens with abilities, such as the 0/0 Constructs. It's a small change, but I appreciate it

Happy to hear that.

Trivia about Vizzerdrix

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by hexooze 2 Comments

Hi Mark!
Yesterday is my birthday. May I get trivia among one of my favorite cards - Worldfire, Wurmcoil Engine, Radiant Performer, Sundial of the Infinite, or Vizzerdrix? Or a random card from MH3 not covered by your previous Making Magic articles?

Vizzerdrix got created as a card for a product called Starter. The reason we made it is we had a series of TV commercials, one of which featured Kezzerdrix from Tempest (it involved mixing a wrestler, a chainsaw, and a bunny in a machine). A different ad in the same campaign used an Orgg. So to tie to those, we made a simpler Orgg and Vizzerdrix, as the original cards were too complicated for a beginner product.Happy Belated Birthday!

Steps to Magic for Beginners

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by greggawatt 7 Comments

Following up on my "magic for beginners" question. I think jumpstart is great, but I'm envisioning a set that exists in a way that can add complexity for each level. Like you break out the set and it starts ok here are two 30 card decks with just creatures (and those creatures just have say, haste and flying), once you're good with that, you add in 10 sorcery cards that are easy to understand, then 10 enchantments, then 10 instants. I just feel like magic throws people in the deep end.

The interesting thing we’ve learned having explored this topic for over thirty years is players are more likely to continue playing if it’s a little above them, if they feel like there’s more things to learn. When we strip a lot of things out to simplify it, many players go, “That’s it?” and leave never to explore any deeper.

Sets for New Players

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by greggawatt 8 Comments

I've been doing a lot of teaching people, especially kids magic. It's really coming clear to me how complicated this game is! I miss sets like Portal that paired down the complexity, would you produce a set again for new players?

We are constantly looking for ways to help onboard new players. Have you tried playing Jumpstart with them?

Commander Precons Vs. Starter Decks

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by izzipurrito 15 Comments

I'm really struggling to understand this:Assassin's Creed didn't get Commander precons and instead got two 60-card starter decks to introduce them to 60-card formats. While Modern Horizons 3, a set that is dedicated to possibly the most popular 60-card format, got Commander precons?

Universes Beyond can function as a good entry for new players, so we made starter decks for them. Modern Horizons sets are for players who like high complexity and nostalgia. Many Commander players fall squarely into that audience.

Praise for Starter Decks

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by eredithdriscol 9 Comments

I just want to say I'm a huge fan of the fact that you have starter decks for the Assassin's Creed set. That new players (especially those who like Assassin's Creed, but may not have played Magic before) have somewhere to start that's not a blank slate is awesome. I also think the size of the Beyond Booster set also nicely bridges a gap between commander decks, secret lairs, and tent pole sets. High fives to all involved!

High fives to be applied.

Assassin's Creed Starter Deck

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 11 Comments

Why do a starter deck for assassins creed? The starter decks are intended for players just starting out but the assasins creed cards are modern legal so the complexity and power level should be for more advanced players. You didn't do commander decks for this product when they made way more sense than mh3

Beginners can play cards that are Modern legal. : )

Support for Cephalid Errata

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 26 Comments

as a long-time player i'd like to voice my support for the cephalid style creature type errata. cephalids are still cephalids flavorfully, but mechanically having them grouped with existing octopodes has upside. having the word octopus on the type line also helps new players understand what the word cephalid means (octopus person), which i think is a boon to their brand. zombies are very popular and encompassing mummies, ghouls, nim, and skaabs is a positive for those varied creative executions.

I agree having Cephalids and normal Octopuses working together will be long term positive for the game.

Swedish Gentry Format

New 26 May 2024 Asked by kvanever 0 Comments

Happy birthday Mark! Here's some Magic trivia for you - I just moved to Sweden and they play a unique style of constructed here called Gentry. It's standard 60/15 deck and sideboard, but it can only include 4 unique rares or mythics and 15 uncommons and then the rest of the cards have to common. It's pretty fun and it's very easy to afford several decks. People often bring extras to tournaments to loan to new players

Cool format. Thanks.

New Player Gratitude

Happy Birthday Mark! As a relatively new player (only been playing since forgotten realms) I don't have too many stories to tell, but going down to my lgs every Friday to play commander has been a great way to consistently get out of the house/dorm. Thank you for making this wonderful game!
