Mechanics of Gifting Explained

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by tiwaztyrsfist 4 Comments

With regards to "Gift a tapped fish" being a single 'keyword', are the rules being written in such a way that Gifting in general can be referred to by other cards?

I.e. Something like "If a player gives another player a gift [do this thing]."Or will they have to refer to SPECIFIC gifting effects?Like, will "Gift a tapped fish" "Gift a Card" "Gift a Food" all technically be a different as First Strike, Trample, and Flying from a rules point of view?

They’re connected like protection connects protection from red and protection from instants.

Elephant Abilities Hypothesis

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by jdrawer01 12 Comments

Happy Juneteenth eve, Mark!If a hypothetical monocolored legendary creature were to read "Elephants you control have X," where X is a keyword ability, what do you suppose would be the most likely color and keyword combination, and if you have time, why? The Dermy Pack wants to know!

It would be green and say “Elephants you control have trample.”

Optimal Damage Assignment

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by theuninvitedghost 2 Comments

“ The answer is 2. Each creature has to be dealt lethal damage which is 1 point of deathtouch damage, the rest tramples over to the player.” Isn’t the answer to all blocking creatures with both deathtouch and trample scenarios ‘It depends how the attacking player decides to assign damage’? Can’t you assign more damage than lethal to a creature?

Yes, but we can assume the players are making optimal choices to win the game.

Deathtouch and Trample Interaction

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by lesserideafountain 67 Comments

Re: deathtouch and trample. Do you feel like the interaction between the two is working as intended, or would you like to see it changed someday?

The rules know how they interact. Many players don’t know what that is. A 4/4 creature blocks a 4/4 creature with deathtouch and trample. How much damage does the player take? The answer is 3. The first point is considered lethal because of deathtouch, so the rest can trample over. Two 4/4 creatures block a 4/4 creature with deathtouch and trample. How much damage does the player take? The answer is 2. Each creature has to be dealt lethal damage which is 1 point of deathtouch damage, the rest tramples over to the player.EDIT: Mistyped the question. Fixing.

Deathtouch and Trample Interaction

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by quantext 43 Comments

If/when: A creature that simultaneously and unconditionally has deathtouch and trample.

If. We’ve chosen not to combine them as their interaction is confusing, powerful, and not particularly fun.

Trivia for Silvos, Rogue Elemental

New 30 May 2024 Asked by jellobrand 34 Comments

Hello Mark, hope all is well!I'm about to celebrate my 32nd birthday and would like to invoke the sacred rite of trivia from you! I got into this game when I was eight years old, someone in my class showed up with the iconic plastic baggy filled with a rubber band bound stack of little cardboard rectangles. I saw the card Root Elemental and was transfixed with the game ever since.Shortly after I found my way in a card shop and saw the absolutely mesmerizing Silvos, Rogue Elemental. I still to this day get a feeling of awe looking at that big green guy.So, do you have any hidden trivia on the pit fighter Silvos? Thanks for all you do for this game and for what you have done for me. Magic has been a very large part of my life for a long time, I appreciate your work and the work of everyone who has made it what it is.

Silvia is the largest regenerating creature at 8/5. The only other 8-power regenerator is Hunted Troll and it’s an 8/4 without trample (and gives the opponent four 1/1 blockers).Happy Birthday!

Tertiary Abilities Rule

New 09 May 2024 Asked by thunderweb 27 Comments

I have a question about tertiary abilities not being used on multicolor cards.https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/mechanical-color-pie-2021This article says Trample is tertiary in White, Blue, and Black. Does it mean there shouldn't be a WUBRG or GWUB creature with trample, even if Green is the primary color for it?

Tertiary abilities shouldn’t be that color’s contribution to a gold card. As long as a multicolor card has a color that’s primary or secondary in the ability, all is good. For instance, a green/blue multicolor card can have trample, because trample is primary in green.

Keywording and Deviation

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 28 Comments

"Indestructible was used consistently in its template, while unblockability was not." What's wrong with keywording Unblockable and just spelling out anything different like "can't be blocked by green creatures"? Menace is a keyword, but you don't say "menace for 3 creatures", you just spell it out if isn't exactly the same "can't be blocked by less than 3 creatures". Trample is a keyword, but you don't say "trample over planeswalkers".

It was a matter of how often we deviated from the default.

Spell Modifiers Limitation

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 31 Comments

As a previous asker talked about trample not being able to be templated onto Instants and Sorceries, are the legal spell modifiers the ones that augment the damage itself in some way (ie Deathtouch, Lifelink, Wither) and not augment the damage step (ie Trample, Double Strike, Fear)?

I believe so.

Trample on Spells

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by magnadrake 31 Comments

Hi Mark. If instants and sorceries can gain deathtouch and lifelink (e.g. Judith), can it also gain Trample? As in, the actual keyword. I am aware that cards such as Flame Spill are able to define excess damage. I am just curious if it's allowed to have it as the keyword instead.

I don’t believe it can. That’s why I did it in an Un-set.

Token Name Harmonization

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by snowsuit-letter 39 Comments

Does R&D have any plans to harmonize the names and rules text of tokens, similar to what happened to creature types in Llorwyn? For instance, Thopter artifact creature tokens are usually 1/1 fliers, but Leonardo da Vinci makes 0/2 flying Thopters. So the name "thopter token" doesn't uniquely tell you what the rules text is. Likewise, there are 2/2 Knights with firs strike, 2/2 Knights with trample and haste, 1/1 colorless Spirits, 1/1 white Spirits, and many more examples.

We do within any one set, but we allow variance between sets.

Trample Deathtouch Combo

Is the interaction of trample and deathtouch something that generally shouldn't appear on a single card?

Correct.

Walls vs Creatures

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 31 Comments

Re walls, again: Whats do you consider to be the pros of using that instead of creatures? It definitely interacts with stuff differently, like trample. Also death touch and those walls make quite a pair!

I personally think walls creatively just don’t feel like creatures, but I’ve accepted that we’ve chosen to take this path with them.

Why is blocking trample a problem

It is both confusing in how it works, and hard to make happen.

If. “Blocking trample” is problematic on several levels.

Trample Confusion

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by jynx316 36 Comments

What rule confuses people that you just don’t understand why? As in, it makes perfect sense to you, but others are always asking about it.

I’ve made it my job to understand why. The one that surprised me for years is how hard trample is for some players to understand.

Monstrous Rage Color

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by pfaffeist-blog 31 Comments

Hello, Mark. Curious how Monstrous Rage made it through R&D as a Red card instead of Green? Seems particularly odd considering that RDW is already so powerful in standard and Mono-Green is... neglected. RDW already had cards like Dreadmaw's Ire and Mirran Banesplitter and Ancestral Anger and Lunar Frenzy and so forth. Green got Royal Treatment, which honestly feels more White. Green has Massive Might... maybe Staggering Size? Neither of which gets played compared to all the RDW spells.

+2/+0 is more red than green. Red is secondary in trample, so it creating an aura with trample isn’t odd. And while green creates more +1/+1 counters than red (I know this is a +1/+1 aura), red is allowed to do it.The larger issue is that the card was mostly like designed to fit the needs of limited. When designing cards at lower rarities, we’re more focused on making things that enable limited and casual constructed than high end tournament competitive play.

Creature Trample Mechanics

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by doopboopdoop 24 Comments

Would red be the color to give creatures blocked by a given creature trample (so as a downside mechanic)

Possibly. Black is king of can’t block, but doesn’t grant trample. Red is number two.

Nature's Blessing Beads

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by chetskolos 28 Comments

Nature's Blessing has only one paper printing and its text is: "{G}{W}: Choose and discard a card from your had to have target creature gain banding, first strike, or trample or get a +1/+1 counter." Since before keyword counter were a thing I used glass beads with 'banding' or the other keywords to mark this change to the creature since this effect lasts indefinitely, and the wording (although cumbersome) does suggest using counters. What do you suggest I do to avoid misrepresenting the card?

Using glass beads is fine. Just be aware they aren’t technically counters for cards that mechanically care about counters.

Trample as Evasion

New 05 Oct 2023 Asked by yoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyo 32 Comments

Mark, this is something of a debate in the community so I thought to ask for your opinion: do you, or R&D as a whole, consider trample to be a form of evasion?

It is thought of as partial evasion.
