Differentiating Rules and Functional Erratas

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by kasim18-blog 8 Comments

I don't play Neheb so I have no feelings there, but I am genuinely curious. Why is it okay to change the rules/wording and make a major functional errata to how Neheb works, but not make the nephilim and Godsire legendary in the name of avoiding functional errata? It's not like Companion where it was an emergency thing.

I know we’re looking into this issue. That said, there is a difference between changing a card and changing a rule which results in a card playing differently. The first is functional errata (we’re actively changing how the card works). The latter isn’t. We’re changing how the game works and the relevant cards play with the rules as they now exist. Here’s an example. Lifelink used to stack. If you had two copies of lifelink on a creature you gained twice the life. We then changed how lifelink worked. Every card with lifelink now worked differently, but that wasn’t us specifically redoing any card.

Possibility of Basic Evergreen Theme

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by cavegirlpoems 5 Comments

If/when: A set with a 'basic evergreen keywords matter' theme? Like "creatures you control with Lifelink get +1/+1" or "gets +1/+0 for each creature you control with haste", that sort of thing.

If. The as-fan of most creature keywords (with flying being the big exception) is just too low to mechanically care about them in limited.

Rewording Ability-Granting Lords

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by doopboopdoop 13 Comments

Has it ever been considered to reword ability granting lords to say "CARDNAME and other creatures get..." instead of the current system of saying its effect twice? So say Lyra Dawnbringer would say "Lyra Dawnbringer and other angels have lifelink"

I don’t think that has been considered.

Creature Traits

New 11 May 2024 Asked by zopandrel 23 Comments

with various type of creature having common things, like goblin being red, spider having reach and other similar aspect either on the design or the flavor side, what would be the common ground ( if there's one ) for giant and vampire ?

Giants tend to be bigger, 3/3 and up. Vampires often have flying and/or lifelink, but we make too many for them all to have it.

Lifelink in Green/Red

New 04 May 2024 Asked by phenax-god-of-reception-blog 25 Comments

Would it theoretically be possible for a green/red creature to have lifelink? Not necessarily permanently, maybe temporary through activation or through a specific trigger. Green has access to lifegain, and red often cares about damage, so something with both hurt and help makes thematical sense.

Lifelink isn’t primary or secondary source n either color, so I’m skeptical we’d do that.

Keyword Viability

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by tufhfoeueveufnrjficifjr 17 Comments

Hi mark, you said it’s important to specify life loss and life gain so you’re sceptical on viability of ‘drain (target) x’ being keyworded. But lifelink is keyworded obfuscating the gain to new players is it just a volume thing or is the life loss vs damage in drain the real sticking point ?

It’s a volume and awareness thing.

Color Mismatch Solution

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 31 Comments

What happens when a UB character obviously has a keyword, but its color doesn't match? Like if a character's personality/vibe/etc are clearly Izzet, but lore wise they have abilities that clearly mean it should have lifelink or something?

We usually find a way to capture them mechanically in the colors that best represent their character.

Spell Modifiers Limitation

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 31 Comments

As a previous asker talked about trample not being able to be templated onto Instants and Sorceries, are the legal spell modifiers the ones that augment the damage itself in some way (ie Deathtouch, Lifelink, Wither) and not augment the damage step (ie Trample, Double Strike, Fear)?

I believe so.

Trample on Spells

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by magnadrake 31 Comments

Hi Mark. If instants and sorceries can gain deathtouch and lifelink (e.g. Judith), can it also gain Trample? As in, the actual keyword. I am aware that cards such as Flame Spill are able to define excess damage. I am just curious if it's allowed to have it as the keyword instead.

I don’t believe it can. That’s why I did it in an Un-set.

Evergreen Abilities Expansion

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by natew000 15 Comments

Loved the podcasts about evergreen abilities. Do you think there’s evergreen/deciduous design space for other qualities that are connected directly to damage, the way that lifelink and deathtouch are?

Things become evergreen/deciduous because they’re useful and have ample design space. We’ll keep exploring that space, but I have no idea if we’ll find a new thing that useful. Maybe. : )

Lifelink in Green

New 22 Mar 2024 Asked by marrinara-sauce 45 Comments

Why is lifelink not in Green's pie? It seems like life gain that scales with a creature's power would be a sure fit.

Green and white overlap more than any other two colors, so we’re careful to do things to keep them separate.

White's Lifelink Prevalence

New 22 Mar 2024 Asked by 22bebo 34 Comments

Why does white get lifelink so much more frequently than black? They're both primary in it, but there are 323 cards with white in their color identity that have lifelink and only 230 cards with black in their color identity.

White is first in the ability and black second. Both being primary doesn’t mean there can’t be a pecking order.

Spells with Lifelink

Were you surprised that adding lifelink to spells was doable in the rules?

I was not.

Noncreature Keyword Usage

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 34 Comments

Why don't we see more noncreatures with keyword abilities. Like lifelink or deathtouch on a sorcery or hexproof on enchantments? You do it so rarely and I would like more.

The utility is low and the confusion is high.

Lifelink on Green Creatures

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by krinstranger 28 Comments

So I know that you don't put Lifelink on Green creatures to avoid them being too similar to White, but if one slipped through it wouldn't be a color pie break because Green can gain life no problem. Would you consider it a bend?

I’d call it a bend.

Green vs White Identity

New 02 Oct 2023 Asked by hakkairequiem 35 Comments

Green and white have probably the biggest overlap between colors. Tokens, creature strategies, enchantments, lifegain... What are the most impactful decisions that have been taken to differentiate the two of them? And what can we expect going forward?

There are just a lot of divisions we make where one of the colors does something the other doesn’t. Lifelink is only in white. Granting larger boosts to your team is green. Things like that.

Art vs Mechanics

New 19 Sep 2023 Asked by jirachibi2550 39 Comments

Have you done a DTW on art vs mechanics about cards with art that doesn't match their effects? Multiple huge creatures that should have reach don't, multiple only semi tall creatures have it when they shouldn't, as an example. Or certain creatures having lifelink when they're just normal knights or whatever.

I’ll add it to the short list.

Mechanic Naming Logic

New 26 Aug 2023 Asked by mysticleviathan 41 Comments

You’ve mentioned that when artifactfall happens that it wouldn’t be called that. Why not? I think it’s great to connexf the suffix of fall to mean “when X enters the battlefield”. I think it’s also great with link like lifelink meaning “when a creature deals damage, do X”. I feel like it would help newer players who might’ve heard of lifelink or landfall to connect with what it means and enfranchised players would get a kick out of it. I feel like it’s an opportunity wasted.

When vocabulary doesn’t make cognitive sense, it becomes harder for players to grasp it.

Evergreen Keywords Color Pie

New 28 Jul 2023 Asked by mbocek 39 Comments

Can any of the evergreen creature keywords really be color pie breaks? They mostly don't seem relevant/unique enough to undermine a color's fundamental weakness. Maybe lifelink?

The line isn’t color pie break or no. We want each color feeling distinct, so the division of evergreen keywords is important to help create that definition. It’s not that green couldn’t philosophically have lifelink. It’s that we want a division between green and white which have the danger of overlapping too much.

Lifelink Mechanics

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by blaze-1013 25 Comments

We have a card that gives instants and sorceries lifelink so they can clearly have the ability, so would you ever just print one that just naturally has it?

It’s possible. The larger issue would be could we write it out to be clearer.
