I really enjoyed Shadowmoor/Shadowmoor/Shadowmoor.

Untap symbol revisit

If/when: a new/updated untap symbol?

If. The untap symbol didn’t go over well in Shadowmoor.

Lorwyn and Shadowmoor Preferences

Perhaps a question for the readers: when people ask you for a return to Lorwyn, do they typically mean Lorwyn, Shadowmoor, or both?

Best Shadowmoor Draft Format

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by szwanger 1 Comments

Which do you consider the best draft format from this group: all Shadowmoor, Shadowmoor/Eventide (Shadowmoor first), Shadowmoor/Eventide (Eventide first), or all Eventide?

All Shadowmoor. It’s one of my all-time favorite draft environments.

Ravnica vs Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by jambrose 6 Comments

Can I please request that we replace Ravnica with Bloomburrow as the go to two-color plane. I don't think I've been this excited for a magic set since the end of the weatherlight saga? Maybe Shadowmoor/Eventide?

I know its fleeting and we have a lot I'm going to dislike next year so I'm going to enjoy the heck out of this set. But PLEASE consider making this a soon return.

Success breeds repetition.

Hybrid Use in Future Sets

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by davidemsa 32 Comments

Does the way hybrid works in Commander makes you unlikely to do another set heavy on hybrid cards? (But probably not as heavy as Shadowmoor.) I ask a fan of hybrid, hoping that's still possible.

We’re going to use hybrid how we need to use it. Commander will use it how it wants to use it.

Rhys the Redeemed Trivia

New 07 May 2024 Asked by barracius 29 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday! I hereby invoke the sacred rite of Blogatog Birthday Trivia! What is some awesome and preferably previously untold trivia about Rhys the Redeemed? (I think one story you told was about how the card came from experiments of "how do we make a 1 mana legendary creature," so I guess something beyond that)

The Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block was a bout a world that completely changes, so most legendary creatures in Shadowmoor (and Eventide) were new versions of characters you’d already seen on a card in Lorwyn (and Morningtide). The Elves were black and green on Lorwyn and green and white on Shadowmoor. We wanted both Rhys cards to play in the same deck, so we made both castable in a monogreen deck, but then game them elements that showed their second color. As Shadowmoor’s main theme was hybrid, that was the tool we used for Rhys the Redeemed.Rhys the Redeemed’s first ability was aimed towards an Elf deck, something we expected in limited and constructed. The second ability was grander in scale and encouraged a different style of deck, although one that would still work in just the Elf deck.Happy Birthday!

Bloomburrow vs Lorwyn

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by beechdallama 41 Comments

Not fully educated about bloomburrow but under the impression it's just/similar to lorwyn/shadowmoor, so I must ask, are noggles coming back?

They’re pretty different. Bloomburrow is full of anthropomorphic animals. Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is not that.

Hybrid Mechanics Appreciation

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 38 Comments

I just want to say hybrid might be one of my favorite mechanics in the game. I started playing in 2010 so I had just missed Shadowmoor block, but looking back through it as I was getting into the game the set just really resonated with me. I know we'll never get that much hybrid in a set, but do you think it can have a larger presence than what it typically does? To use a metaphor, it is often the candles on a birthday cake and I'd want it to be the icing.

I just did a two-part article on the history of hybrid. Our usage has been climbing over the years.

Hybrid Set Possibilities

If/when, an all-hybrid set?

If. Shadowmoor was fifty percent hybrid and it proved to be too much.

Conspire Mechanic Revision

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by krobat 31 Comments

If you made Conspire (the mechanic) today, do you think it would still have the color restriction?

Shadowmoor had a strong “color matters” theme, so it was needed there. Could we redo it without the color requirement? I’m not sure. It might require adjusting some costing.

Hybrid Cards Analysis

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by j-waffles 40 Comments

Hybrid cards are supposed to be effects that could work in either color individually, since they can be cast with either color individually. But I’ve noticed recently that a lot of hybrid cards aren’t really in pie for all of their colors. Spitting image, augery adept, several of the companions, and many others all are hybrid cards that aren’t actually in pie for one of their colors.

Let’s talk them through. Spitting Image - Green normally only copies its own creatures, but it is tertiary in copying creatures, often in token form, so it’s a bend, but not a break. Augery Adept - White normally doesn’t get curiosity (saboteur draw), but it can jump through a hoop once a turn to draw a card, so this is a bend. The life gain is the more serious issue. Blue doesn’t normally get to gain life, but we let it do so on rare occasion (there are two blue cards that make Food), so I’ll call it a strong bend. No part of the card is a clean break though. Have we ever made mistakes with hybrid? Sure. Shadowmoor block pushed hybrid a bit more than it should as almost half the cards were hybrid. That said, the percentage of color pie breaks among hybrid cards is below monocolor cards, so it’s not an increased threat of a color pie break.

Untap Symbol Return

New 10 Oct 2023 Asked by drsnap23 36 Comments

Lorwyn (well, Shadowmoor to be exact) was also known as the set that introduced the untap symbol to the game, so what are the chances of it coming back when we return to Lorwyn ?

Low as it confused the majority of players.

Lorwyn Return Confirmation

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by su92 32 Comments

I think I missed that detail during the presentation, is the return to Lorwyn an actual "sequel" to Lorwyn (and maybe Shadowmoor) block? Or is it more of a backdrop set?

It’s a return, not a backdrop set.

Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is (loosely) based on Celtic mythology.

Mirror World Trope

New 04 Aug 2023 Asked by tybonel13 34 Comments

Do you think Magic will ever try the mirror world/mirror universe trope, or did Lorwyn/Shadowmoor already take that spot? I'm thinking either a new plane that's the "inverse" of a familiar one, or a new plane that has both aspects and some way to access one from the other, Stranger Things/ToTK Depths style.

Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is that trope.

Planeswalkers' Races Unnoticed

New 31 Jul 2023 Asked by j-waffles 65 Comments

There’s a question I’ve had about planeswalkers for a while now that is only more prevalent because of omenpaths. How come nobody is ever confused by the races?!? Cat people are only native to some planes; but Ajani has been to innistrad, kaladesh, kamigawa, lorwyn//shadowmoor, and Zendikar, all of which are planes that do not have any cat people. How come nobody is ever shocked or terrified of this hulking 6’6” cat person? Daretti has been to kaladesh, Dovin has been to regatha, all 5 of the original planeswalker cards were on lorwyn which has no humans, and nobody is ever shocked or confused!

Just because the stories don’t focus on that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

Hybrid Matters Possibility

New 18 Jul 2023 Asked by gabecampos89 24 Comments

Let me flip the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor question: What's the Rabiah Scale for a "Hybrid Matters" Plane?

I think a “hyrbid matters” plane is 6, but it wouldn’t be as high an as-fan as Shadowmoor.
