Card Compatibility with Force of Will

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by elmdormesdoram 7 Comments

One with Nothing is the strongest card in the game, but it has a huge problem: it can't be pitched to Force of Will! Can we have a version of that effect that costs U/B (hybrid)?

I don’t believe every card needs to be pitched to Force of Will. : )

Hybrid Mana Cards Correlation

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 5 Comments

People have complained about not having enough cards to fill out colors for limited with the switch to play boosters and I've started noticing an uptick in hybrid mana cards which would be a solution to this problem. Is this correlated, or is it just a coincidence that we've recently seen more hybrid and that it helps address this issue?

It’s correlated.

Future of Hybrid Commons

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by trainmastergt 13 Comments

Hi Mark!
With Karlov Manor and Bloomburrow, we’ve now seen two cycles of common creature cards that can be played with Hybrid mana in sets that otherwise don’t have a major hybrid theme. Does this mean that we’re going to see an increase in the number of hybrid commons in the future?

Common hybrid cards have proven to be a valuable tool in helping to raise as-fan of certain themes for limited, so I do think we’ll see it used again.

Hybrid Commons Goal in Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 6 Comments

What was the goal behind the hybrid commons in bloomburrow? This set doesn't seem to have either the strong multicolor focus or the strong monocolor focus that tends to necessitate that kind of thing in limited

It gets the as-fan of creature types up.

Request for More Hybrid Cards

Please get out of my head. I was just going to ask you for more hybrids at lower rarities for limited and to maybe reconsider threshold and then ... BOOM(burrow)

Bloomburrow vs Lorwyn

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 29 Comments

Is Bloomburrow Lorwyn 2.0?The hybrid mana is what’s hitting it for me in addition to the tone

There are some similarities (such as no Humans), but they are distinct from one another.

Hybrid Mechanic in MH3

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by mistershinyobject 3 Comments

Why were the two-color MDFC lands in MH3 hybrid? The point of hybrid is "or" not "and," but the backside gives you that other mana anyway. What's the point of a card that says "you don't have to play mana sources of this other color" while also giving you a mana source of that color?

The point is you can play it in a deck of either color without having to support the second color in the deck.

Hybrid Card Design Possibilities

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by painfully-bisexual 10 Comments

Hi Mark! Back again with another question. Regardless of likelihood, do you feel it would ever be possible to design a card that cost {w/u}{b/r} without it being a break? Fiend Artisan, for example, is in pie whether you cast it for BB, BG, or GG. Do you think a card could work in pie that could be cast for WB, WR, UB, or UR?

You just design a card with one ability that’s hybrid w/u and a second ability that’s hybrid b/r. Very doable. The bigger issue is multiple hybrid symbols, especially ones that don’t overlap, confuse a significant amount of players.

Transforming Card Colors

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 2 Comments

Can a blue battle with U in it's mana cost transform into a card that's not U color identity and do an effect not in blue?

Not something that’s a break in blue. If the back is another color, we treat it like a hybrid design.

Colorless Cards in Mono colored Set

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 4 Comments

Could a mono colored set work with notable amounts of colorless cards to fill in the draft slots?

Colorless cards are one tool to help with that. Hybrid is the big other tool.

Considerations on Hybrid Mana

New 15 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 1 Comments

A player at my LGS argued against your want of Hybrid mana able to be in mono colored decks was Devotion. If you can count Devotion of a color that your commander doesn't control, it shouldn't be in your deck. Wdyt?

You can have permanents of colors not of your Commander. What’s the difference?

Chief of the Edge

New 15 Jun 2024 Asked by snivy1245 8 Comments

What does Chief of the Edge do that requires it to also be black? I ask in consideration of Question 28. As far as I can see, an anthem is something that could be done in only white.

We *try* to make all multicolored cards mechanically reflect all colors, but it can’t always be done while meeting other constraints of the set. They’ll get tagged by the Council of Colors, but are allowed to exist if there isn’t an easy fix that works for the set. Chief of Edge isn’t that though. It’s a multicolor signpost for a white/black Warrior typal theme. Both colors can grant power to its creatures. Yes, white does it more often, and usually grants all its creatures while black pumps black subsets. It could have been hybrid from a color pie perspective, but most signposts are multicolored.

Tricolor Card Costing Pattern

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by blind42-blog 36 Comments

If two-mana three-color cards became a regular occurrence, would they be more likely to cost both hybrids with their central color, or their central color plus either of their allies/enemies? E.g. for Bant: blue/white + green/white vs. white + green/blue

One locked color with a hybrid mana of two other colors is easier to design than two different hybrid cards with an overlapping color.

More than 2 Colors for Hybrid Mana

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by silver-scarabs 19 Comments

sorry if this has been asked before, but has hybrid mana for more than 2 colors ever been considered by the design team?

We have explored it. It starts getting close to generic mana.

Hybrid Use in Future Sets

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by davidemsa 32 Comments

Does the way hybrid works in Commander makes you unlikely to do another set heavy on hybrid cards? (But probably not as heavy as Shadowmoor.) I ask a fan of hybrid, hoping that's still possible.

We’re going to use hybrid how we need to use it. Commander will use it how it wants to use it.

Green’s Role in Card Draw

I’m skeptical green would do that.

Request for More Hybrid Dragons

New 29 May 2024 Asked by zanmor 51 Comments

I'd like to request some more dragons that are crossed with other fantasy creatures. My top 3: Dragon Unicorn, Dragon Lammasu, Dragon Phelddagrif. Thanks!

We’ve been making more Dragons that are also other creature types over the last few years, so I think more will happen.

Monocolor Set Features

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zbaschtian 5 Comments

If/(foreseeable future)When: New Monocolored Matters set. I know you already did this with Morningtide/Eventide, and I don't consider Adamant or Devotion to lead to the gameplay patterns we're discussing. Most likely hybrid, colorless, cycling and/or DFC/Split Card focused to support limited.

When for sets with monocolor themes. I’m not quite sure what you want if devotion doesn’t count.
