Eldrazi Card and Colourless Devotion

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by temporarynameiwillchange 2 Comments

Could an eldrazi card care about devotion to colourless?

We don’t tend to print many cards with colorless costs, and when we do we use less colorless mana symbols, so affinity for colorless isn’t set up well.

Maybe. : )

Green's Monopoly on Ramp

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by wk-vylion 6 Comments

I was just talking with a friend about how card draw, despite being "Blue's thing", all colors need it because having cards in hand is a resource that all decks need, and thus Blue card draw is the only unconditional one, but every color has been getting some form of conditional card draw that ties it to its color philosophies. This begs the question, why does Green have such a monopoly on ramp? Can't the same thing be done for that? The closest thing is White's catch up mechanics

All colors get the ability to fetch their own basic land type. Red has some ramp, but more one-shot than repeatable. And white does some catch-up ramp. In addition, we make a bunch of colorless cards that can help.

Dividing Set Themes in Drafts

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by zackdes44 4 Comments

When/if: a single set split into two draftable packs. There is some overlap (land cycles, equipment, colorless artifacts, etc) but one pack is Team X (Bolas let's say) which is 3 different archetypes in his colors and the other packs are Team Y (Ugin let's say) which are 3 archetypes in colorless, white, black. All the cards together make a single set, but you would draft Ugin packs with Ugin packs, and then only play against players who drafted Bolas packs.

We did this in Mirrodin Besieged. The set was split in Mirran and Phyrexian, and you chose which side to play when you played in the prerelease.

Templating Mana Creation Cards

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by eternalcheechako 2 Comments

any idea why cards that can make colorless OR colored mana (like nightshade dryad) are templated with one ability for colorless, and one for colored?

The other way to write it would be “T: Add W, U, B, R, G or C” which would make give it a five-color color identity and make the card very hard to play in Commander.

Usage of Colorless Creatures

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by gus-goose 13 Comments

Why is it that so many sets have a colorless creature that can put cards from graveyards on the bottom of libraries? These cards almost never make the cut in my limited decks and it’s an effect that almost never becomes relevant in games. Is there a purpose I’m missing?

It’s usually an answer to graveyard strategies the opponent is using.

Formatting of 'Gift'

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by kingofyou115 1 Comments

Is there a reason Gift wasn't formatted like Ward to remain a generic keyword? It seems like the kind of keyword that could become evergreen if it wasn't specifically tied to hardcoded options like "Gift a tapped fish." For example:Gift - Draw a card (As you cast this spell, you may choose an opponent. If you do, they draw a card before the rest of this spell's effects.)

We can say Gift a _________ a do whatever gift we like. It’s not very restricting.

Land Cycle Naming Strategy

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by singerofw 10 Comments

Since Magic in general is so eternal-oriented nowadays, are you still trying to give generic names to new land cycles? After all, reprinting them is so much easier when you don't have to be bound to the specific planes currently in Standard.

It greatly depends on the land cycle.

Discovering Lore in Fallen Empires

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 11 Comments

Mark, I got into magic just before Fallen Empires. For me, the iconic MtG experience was playing Fallen Empires and Ice Age every day at school. We played every day. Every day, Mark. Every. Day.I DID NOT KNOW FALLEN EMPIRES WAS A FACTION SET WHERE EVERY COLOUR WAS A DIFFERENT WAR BETWEEN TWO RACES THAT IS SUCH A GOOD CONCEPT(I think in part it’s because Thralls, Thallids and Homarids were new types and stood out while the rest seemed like generic fantasy and at that time flavour text was sometimes just random Shakespeare quotes but still it’s so obvious and I can’t believe I missed it)

That’s why I do podcasts on old sets. : )

Issues in Play Boosters

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by guardmanxl 23 Comments

Mark, I play a lot of limited and one thing I've noticed with the new play boosters is that it is no longer guaranteed to have a card of every color in it. This is especially glaring in a set like MKM or MH3 with multicolored commons. In MH3 especially, since there are no colorless commons, I've opened several packs where it is missing a color and the only cards in my other color are multicolored, meaning I basically don't get a 1st pick. Is this a known problem? Is anything being done about it?

The collation only allows us to guarantee four colors and not five.

Potential Strixhaven Additions

There are no plans to add a college.

Colorless Symbol Potential Usage

New 05 Jul 2024 Asked by aalgot 6 Comments

If colorless had its unique {C} symbol from the start rather than sharing with generic. Do you think the generic symbol could then have been used for “Add one mana of any color” type effects, or would there be a problem with that?

I don’t think that would have happened.

Colorless Frame Usage

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 1 Comments

It’s something we did for the Eldrazi,Well the eldrazi are eldrich abominations, very strange templating makes sense for them. But that isn’t the case for all colorless cards. So why not just make that the eldrazi frame instead of the colorless frame?

We’ve used the colorless frame on non-Eldrazi and players seemed to like it.

Potential Colorless Enchantment Spells

If/When: Deciduous colorless enchantment spells?

Colorless is already deciduous. And enchantments are evergreen. So, I think it will happen. I’m not sure it will become a regular thing, but who know?

Reason Behind Colorless Cards Design

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 0 Comments

Why *is* the design for colorless cards formatted like a full art card with the opaque border and text box? Why that instead of following more closely to the modern colorless artifact design?

It’s something we did for the Eldrazi, and continued because players liked it.

Reception of Poison Mechanism

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by zopandrel 1 Comments

how did poison was received by the players so far ? I was curious because, given how cautious you and the dev must be with alternative wincon, I was wondering if a New archetype centered around an alternative wincon would see the light of the day in the future.

Poison is actually pretty popular, provided it gets used sporadically. Players, as a generic whole, like to see it, but not regularly.

Colorless Cards in Mono colored Set

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 4 Comments

Could a mono colored set work with notable amounts of colorless cards to fill in the draft slots?

Colorless cards are one tool to help with that. Hybrid is the big other tool.

Mechanic Reprinting Query

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by painfully-bisexual 2 Comments

Hi Mark! I've seen more than few people ask questions about [mechanic from a UB release, such as rad counters] being printed elsewhere, and, please excuse me if I'm misunderstanding the issue but, why not ask the owners of the property if it would be an issue with them? Or is it more complex than that?

We’re not reprinting cards from a property outside of a set about that property. There are some cards that have generic enough names that we can make in-universe art and release it.
