Trivia About Devotion Mechanic

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by junejulyaugustdecember 7 Comments

Hi Mark! It was my birthday recently :) do you have any fun trivia about the Devotion mechanic?

The devotion mechanic was the redoing of chroma, an ability that first appeared (unnamed) in Future Sight and then (named) in Eventide. Aaron Forsythe originally pitched chroma on a single card in Future Sight, but I held it back because I thought it was a whole mechanic. We had high hopes for chroma, but the audience wasn’t too excited by it. Then when we were making original Theros, we needed a mechanic showing a connection to the Gods, and design team member Zac Hill pitched bring back chroma. We cleaned it up (now only caring about the mana cost of permanents on the battlefield) and renamed it, and it went on to be a beloved mechanic. It goes to show how much execution of a mechanic matters. Happy Birthday!

Avacyn Birthday Trivia

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by sapphicvalkyrja 8 Comments

I would like to invoke the rite of birthday trivia to request something about my favorite character, Avacyn!

From time to time we have what we call “brain to print” cards where a cards gets to print in the exact form it was designed. Avacyn, Angel of Hope was one such card. I made it in early vision design, and it never changed (I think they tried different mana costs, but ended back at where I started).Happy Birthday!

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by vi-the-deer 4 Comments

Hi Mark, I'd like to invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia. If possible, I'd love a tidbit about my favorite creature type, elk.

There was much talk when we first made Elk whether or not it should be Deer. The majority thought Elk sounded better.Happy Birthday!

Enjoyment from Marvel Sets

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by windows-media-playa 5 Comments

Gooday sir! I call upon the sacred right of birthday trivia to ask you about your favorite set to open packs from. I only really started playing when UB LOTR released and since then I've had some fun pulls including Ulamog showcase from MH3. I would love to see what luck brings from your favorite set to rip into.

I’ve been enjoying opening packs from upcoming Marvel sets. : )

Xerex on the Rabiah Scale

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 2 Comments

Mark, it's my birthday this week, and I'd like to thank y'all for timing Bloomburrow prerelease to nearly occur on my personal day of celebration, a set I have been very jazzed about since it was announced. I really love the possum druid in particular.

For my question though, where is Xerex on the Rabiah scale? I really enjoyed the glimpses of surreal Escher geometries and the alien beings that live there.

Xerex is a 9. “World that’s hard to comprehend” is not an ideal premier setting.

Trivia on Sphinxes

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by eviloverlordsinc 12 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday for another hour or so, and so I'd like to request some trivia on Sphinxes in Magic.

We had trouble finding blue’s iconic creature. It needed to fly as blue is the color most associated with flying. We also wanted the creature to be intelligent. Dragons were red’s iconic. We stumbled upon Sphinxes one day, and said, “they tell riddles, that’s pretty smart.” Happy Birthday!

Trivia on 'Love Song of Night and Day'

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by mistymountainsgay 6 Comments

Before my birthday is over, I would love to invoke my right of trivia!Anything about my favorite part of Magic's world, the Love Song of Night and Day? Or if not, Mirage in general? (I fell in love with Magic when I found my parents' old collection of Mirage and 4th Edition, making me probably the youngest grumpy old magic player to ever shake their fist at these new confangled planeswalker cards)

The Love Song of Night and Day was a poem written by Jenny Scott when she was an editor on Magic. Pieces of it were used on flavor text in Mirage block. I would later read the poem at a wedding at a Magic Grand Prix. We would also eventually making a Saga that referenced it.Happy Birthday!

Appreciation for Arcbound Condor

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by edibleashell 8 Comments

Mark! Is birthday for me! I want to use my valuable birthday right to extend my extreme appreciation for whoever is responsible for Arcbound Condor. Such a wonderful card, definitely my favorite from the set and probably the year even. It fits in multiple decks I have and I'm just so happy it exists. So, for my birthday, cab you make sure the responsible party knows how appreciated they are? And if you want to share some arcbound/modular trivia that would be nice too.

The modular mechanic was inspired by the Chimeras from Visions. Happy Birthday!

Balance between Joy and Work

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by blimboak123 18 Comments

Does it make you smile when you see people telling you how much they adore a set? I'm a somewhat newer player who started in 2021, and this set has already brought so much joy. It releases just before my birthday so it feels like wizards gave me the best gift ever!

Seeing players happy does make me happy.

DOM and ELD Trivia

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by ella-is-scarlet-exclusive 4 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday! Can I get trivia on DOM or ELD? They were both significant milestones in my MTG journey and are dear to me.

Dominaria was originally going to be a small block (one larger set and one small), but the small set got changed into a core set just before it was about to begin design.Happy Birthday!

Amonket Flamingo Request and Birthday

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by littlethingwithfeathers 4 Comments

Hello Mark! I would like to invoke the rite of Birthday Trivia (a day late) with a request for Amonket, since I was an Ancient Egyptian Mythology kid growing up.

I'd also like to make an animal request... my partners' favorite animals (a duck and ferret respectively) have appeared on cards (Decoy Duck playtest card and Joven's Ferrets), but my favorite animal, the noble flamingo, has to make do with only a sticker as far as I can tell. Can there be a card with a flamingo someday? Even just a reprint of "Uncage the Menagerie" or similar? Or a variety of Aven?

Thank you for all the work you do for us, both on the cards themselves and demystifying and discussing the hobby.

Amonket and a flamingo, got it. They probably won’t be in the same set. : )Happy Birthday!

Trivia on Ghave and Birthday

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by penguinsandpalmtrees 2 Comments

I would like to invoke the power of birthday trivia! I am turning 30 this year and would like to know if you remember any trivia about Ghave, Guru of Spores from the first official commander precons!

Or alternatively, of my favorite pair of Magic characters, Gisa and Geralf.

Thanks, and have a great summer!
Give the story team high fives from me.

When we originally designed Innistrad, we were tickled by the idea that blue and black created different kinds of Zombies. Blue built them out of parts, ala Frankenstein, where black was more about necromancy. To capture this distinction, we made two characters, brother and sister, that represent each type of Zombie making, and made their core conflict about which is better.Happy 30th Birthday!

Assassin's Creed Cards Trivia

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 30 Comments

At long last, it is time to invoke my birthday trivia! I love your pieces on the color pie and I’m a huge Assassin’s Creed fan, so I’d love if you had any interesting trivia on AC cards that the Council of Colors discussed or tweaked. If nothing comes to mind, I am a massive fan of Boros and Minotaurs; if there’s any trivia about Boros Minotaurs, that would be lovely, or either individually. I get a ton from DtW and Making Magic, keep up the wonderful work!

In Theros block, Minotaurs power and toughness had to add up to a least 5. We made one exception later in the block.Happy Birthday!

Sarkhan is not the name he was born with. He gave it to himself. Happy Birthday!

White Reanimating Large Creatures

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by magicalskeleton 6 Comments

I invoke the rite of birthday trivia: I've noticed that white tends to care about legendary creatures a bit more than other colors. Could we see white reanimate a legendary creature regardless of size? (Typically white reanimates small creatures.)

White could probably do that, given the right set.Happy Birthday!

Trivia on Minion Creature Type

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by worldlytutor 4 Comments

Hey Maro for my birthday could I get some trivia about the minion creature type? What did that mean and why don't we see it anymore?

It represented creatures that served other creatures. The creative team stopped supporting it because they felt it wasn’t necessary, and was covered by other existing creature types.

Trivia for Grove of Burnwillows

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 2 Comments

Hello Mark! My birthday was on the 3rd, but it's been a busy few days so I'm just now cashing in my birthday trivia!Do you have any trivia on Grove of the Burnwillows? Or perhaps Future Sight as a whole?

Grove of the Burnwillows was part of my cycle of cycles dual land cycle, where each futureshifted dual land represented a whole cycle of dual lands. Grove of the Burnwillows was made as an anti-pain land (aka the Ice Age dual lands), where the cost was the opponent gaining a life instead of you losing one. Happy Belated Birthday!
