If, but small if.

Shrines Design Request

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by gridnack 26 Comments

Re: Shrines. Some elves count all elves. However not all elves have to count all elves. May I request Shrines that don’t count all Shrines. One related to the Gods, Demigods, clerics, or devotion feels flavorful.

When 100% (or very near) of cards do something, there’s a lot of expectation for future cards to do it as well. We don’t always do what’s expected, but it has to be factored in, and usually involves other factors.

Creature Type Overlap

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by pikachugirltits 33 Comments

Can a creature type exist in multiple batches? Could you guys do a spellcaster batch of Cleric, Wizard, Warlock, Shaman, and Druid even though Warlock is already part of the outlaw batch?

A creature is allowed to appear in multiple batches.

Outlaws vs Party Mechanic

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by oooblyjooblies96 45 Comments

Outlaws (and the oft-suggested 'Sea monsters' batching) seem like a great hit. In retrospect, do you think that - with appropriate modifications to the rest of the set accordingly - Party in ZNR would have been better received as say, 'Party members (Clerics, Rogues, Warriors and Wizards are party members)'?

Party needed you to have one of each which is slightly different than batching.

Cleric Mechanics Origin

New 28 Feb 2024 Asked by coboney 22 Comments

Hey Mark - my birthday was on Friday. I was wondering if you could tell me something about one of my favorite cards Master Apothecary, or my favorite creature type Cleric

Master Apothecary came about because I was experimenting with other typal resources. Clerics tend to be small, so tapping them felt appropriate. Happy Belated Birthday!

Doctor Creature Type

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by its-just-arti 35 Comments

Is Arcade Gannon supposed to be a Doctor, not a Cleric?Healers and their ilk have been Clerics up until now, is Doctor going to be a creature type that's just available now? Or will I be allowed to use Twice Upon A Time to search him out, and stuff like that?

We are using the Doctor creature type where flavorfully appropriate. Many Universes Beyond sets that are bit more modern in their setting will use it.

Clerics vs Knights

New 09 Dec 2023 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 49 Comments

What ever happened to clerics? Why did R&D drop the class in favor of soldiers and knights?

We still make Clerics. They’re just a narrower flavor than Soldiers. Minus sets/environments, typally caring, like Eldraine, I don’t think we make many more Knights, on average, than Clerics.

Card Text Limitations

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by jynx316 30 Comments

Theoretically, would it be possible for a card to say it qualifies as something, strictly by its text? IE, could a creature card say “~ is Historic” if it wasn’t Legendary or Artifact, or “~ counts as a member of your party” if it’s not a Cleric, Wizard, etc?

I’ve been told the rules don’t allow that. Historic itself isn’t a property, it’s just a shorthand of a list of properties.

Popular Job Types

That question about popular creature types got me wondering, what are the most popular "job" creature types among players (i.e. soldier, wizard, cleric)

My gut is Wizard.

Creature Types Template

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by stormcrow13 93 Comments

In typal that cares for things that are two creature types would it be: creatures that are rabbit and warrior, rabbit warrior creatures, or creatures that are both rabbit and warrior?I’m guessing something like this will probably never happen due to how limiting of a restriction it would be.

Lets say you have three creatures. Peter who is a Rabbit Warrior.Paul who is a Rabbit Cleric.Mary who is a Raccoon Warrior. Here’s what happens with different templates:All Rabbit Warriors you control gets +1/+1Peter gets +1/+1.All Rabbits you control get +1/+1. All Warriors you control get +1/+1.Peter gets +2/+2. Paul and Mary get +1/+1.All Rabbits or Warriors you control get +1/+1.Peter, Paul, and Mary all get +1/+1.

Martha's Creature Type

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by coboney 48 Comments

Given she literally is a medical doctor, and that Who is a modern setting, why was Martha a Cleric instead of a Doctor?

I think in the Doctor Who product only the Doctors got the Doctor creature type. (Someone double check me.)

Doctor Creature Type

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by j-waffles 37 Comments

Is it possible we see any creatures in magic be errata’d to be doctors? Healers tend to be given the cleric type, although I feel like some of them make more sense as doctors

I think Doctor will be used in more modern settings and let high fantasy settings stick with the more fantasy-sounding creature types - yes, things like cleric.

Preserving Druids

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by andymontalbon 40 Comments

Please don't phase out druids, I've always enjoyed seeing local Celtic culture/history represented and unlike witches they're not a sinister depiction. If Magic can handle exaggerated fantasy clerics, angels and demons I think we deserve druids alongside them, Christian symbols have already crowded out pagan alternatives in too many places.

Druid is far less of an issue than Shaman.

Warlock Versus Wizard

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by mslabo102 31 Comments

What makes a Warlock different from a Wizard, a Druid or a Cleric of malicious beings?

It’s just different approaches to using magic. Warlocks tend to have more selfish ends and are willing to tap into forces others won’t.

Clerics Birthday Facts

Was hoping to get some birthday facts on my favorite creature type Clerics if possible!! Thank you in advance!!

In every color pair, there is a creature type that show up the most even distributed between two colors. For white and black, I believe that is Cleric. Happy Birthday!

Tribal Batching Views

New 02 Feb 2023 Asked by throwawayaccountant14 40 Comments

Hi Mark, with all the talk of tribal recently, can I maybe voice a counterpoint/unpopular opinion? As someone who loves making individual tribal decks, I greatly dislike batching of lesser established creature types. Mixing Warrior/Samurai or Wizard/Giants takes away from the unique identity of each tribe. Can we get more lords for lesser types like Clerics did in Dominaria United? Cats/Pirates/Minotaurs/etc could all greatly benefit from a 2 cmc lord that gives +1/+1 to their respective types.

We only get so many slots to do creature type caring cards. Batching allows us to hit more of them and also does a better job of enabling certain themes to hit a large enough volume to work in Commander. We’ll stick make the single creature type cards, but batching is a useful tool to make more players happy.

Color Pie Rules

New 19 Nov 2022 Asked by albus7 45 Comments

Can a RG multicolour creature have a hybrid R/G activated ability that destroys an enchantment? What are the colour pie rules for hybrid on a multicolour card?

We don’t put color on an activation that doesn’t match that effect. For instance, we would make:Blessed Hexmage (version 1)2WCreature - Human Cleric2/21, Sacrifice CARDNAME: Destroy target enchantment. But we wouldn’t make this card:Blessed Hexmage (version 2)2WCreature - Human Cleric2/2R, Sacrifice CARDNAME: Destroy target enchantment.Costing needs to match color pie for messaging as much as functionality.

Acorn Card Criteria

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by kreetn 78 Comments

What makes Far Out an acorn card and Clandestine Chameleon not?
I’ll just come right out and say it: I’m peeved that Far Out, a card whose design I LOVE isn’t implicitly black bordered and that I’m going to need special permission from my playgroup to use it. I’m a Melvin, and not being able to use it everywhere really rustles my Jimmies.

The normal rules can’t handle what’s known as mutually exclusive modes. It’s when a card has multiple modes, but the outcome are different choices of the state of one item. I’ll use the card Outlaw’s Merriment from Throne of Eldraine as my example:Outlaw’s Merriment\1RWWEnchantmentAt the beginning of your upkeep, choose one at random. Create a red and white creature token with those characteristics.• 3/1 Human Warrior with trample and haste.• 2/1 Human Cleric with lifelink and haste.• ½ Human Rogue with haste and “When this creature enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to any target.”There are three modes, but you only get one creature. This forces us to answer the question of what do you do if something is more than one state at once. For example, what happens if you cast Outlaw’s Merriment and chose all three modes? The normal rules can’t handle this. The acorn answer is you combine all the information as best you can. In the case of Outlaw’s Merriment, you would get a 6/4 Human Warrior Cleric Rogue with haste, lifelink, trample, and “When this creature enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to any target.”

DMU Sealed Feedback

New 05 Sep 2022 Asked by armeizh 42 Comments

Hi Mark, a friend who mostly does pre-release and kitchen table said she was very disappointed with DMU sealed once we were done, due to all the "promises" the set appears to make but doesn't deliver on. Specifically, seeing the lord plants for constructed, and Astor, made her hope she could build around them until she saw no merfolks/auras/equipments and only a couple clerics. Personally I think a couple plants are fine, but the set does seem to have a higher than average amount of limited duds

You need to look at uncommons for limited build arounds. Rares and mythic rares are more focused on constructed build arounds. The Lords have been very popular for players eager to build around them in constructed. We have to put them somewhere in the set.

Zombie vs Cleric Lords

New 26 Aug 2022 Asked by rovel7 100 Comments

I am really dissapointed that my zombies didnt get a 2 mana lord, but all the other ones did. Dis you know why clerics was the choice? They are more WB thing

Look up all the Zombie lords we’ve made. Then look up all the Cleric lords. They needed it so much more.
