Chances for New Humanoids

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by abxxxy 16 Comments

Are there any chances of getting new humanoid creature types that aren't humanoid animals? eg. Elf, Kor, VedalkenThey are often some of my favorite creature types in the game because they feel more unique.

I assume we’ll make more.

Fate of Vedalkens

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by theindigosystem 34 Comments

Is Vedalken, the creature type, in danger? I realllllly like Vedalkens as their own things and would hate if it got merged into another type ngl

Vedalkens are staying Vedalkens. We are just changing animal humanoid groups to their animal name (with the exceptions of ones that have pre-existing mythology names made by the real world (and not us, such as Minotaurs).

Omenpaths Usage Variance

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by ragnar-viking 38 Comments

My one personal complaint with Omenpaths is simply that I feel like it hasn't been used enough yet. Outlaws of Thunder Junction is a fun exploration and is a nice use of the Omenpaths but Eldraine, Ixalan and Murder's a Karlov Manor barely used it beyond Kellan's journey, I really only remember one vedalken from Ravnica in Eldraine and Saheeli in Ixalan. I thought maybe interesting to see stuff like vampires from Innistrad clashing/getting along with Vampires from Ixalan just as an example.

Different sets will use omenpaths at different levels and in different ways.

Originality vs Genre in Sets

New 17 Mar 2024 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 45 Comments

Hey mark! I am a die hard vorthos, and I’ve noticed a bit of a trend in recent world building ,, it seems that most sets are drawing from specific source material or genres. I am personally most drawn to the aspects of Magic that are truly unique, such as phyrexia, kor, vedalken, slivers, etc. as such, I would love to request more worlds / themes that are truly original rather than “magic’s take on x”. There’s room for both of course, just throwing in my two cents :)

I’m curious. What was the last world you feel was “truly original”?

New Creature Types

If/when: a new named creature type that’s unique to Magic lore (like Viashino, Atogs, or Vedalken). Thanks!

When. We make them occasionally.

Character Design Decisions

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 33 Comments

the face cards for the MKM commander decks were revealed today, and morska the bant general looks just like a ravnican merfolk but is instead a "vedalken fish"? can you, or somebody, explain how and why this was decided?

She’s a Vedalken that adapted herself through Simic technology. Those creature types are always animals, not other creature races. A Bant Merfolk commander will happen one day. This just wasn’t the appropriate place for it.

Planar Die Interaction

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by suigenyukiouji 27 Comments

I love planechase and Doctor Who, and thus plan to make a First Doctor and Susan deck as such. Question: does Vedalken Squirrel-Whacker interact with the planar die at all? It doesn't specify numbers (I know cards that say "ignore the lowest" and such ignore planar die rolls), but I can only assume it won't allow you to "store" a planeswalk symbol or a chaos symbol as its power or toughness. (though, in an acorn game, maybe it could?)

From the Unfinity FAQ: If an ability triggers “whenever you roll a die,” it will trigger whenever you roll any die, including the planar die. This is a change from previous Un- rules. Some abilities use the result to determine part of the effect. If you get a non-numerical result (currently just the planar die, but the future is long), that part of the effect won’t do anything. What this means is rolling a planar die for Vedalken Squirrel-Whacker won’t do anything as it has no numbers.

Vedalken Trivia

New 13 Nov 2022 Asked by lover-in-blue-deactivated202404 35 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm turning 20 today! May I request some birthday trivia about Vedalkens? :)

Vedalkens were made during a period where we stopped making Merfolk. It was a new attempt to make a creature type that epitomized blue. Happy Birthday!

Ravnica Lore Queries

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by extremecolourtyphoon 42 Comments

Two questions about Vorthos with regards to Ravnica guilds. 1) According to Cory J. Herndon, writer of the Ravnica Cycle novels, the Simic Combine is named after their parun, a vedalken biomancer named Simic. Is Simic namable with Vorthos? 2) the Ravnica Cycle says that every Ravnican angel is created in the image of Razia. If I name Razia, do I get a discount on every Ravnican angel?

1) Yes.2) No.

Request for More Vedalkens

You may. : )

Vedalken Orrery Trivia

New 03 Sep 2022 Asked by anyguy 42 Comments

Hi mark my birthday request was probably lost in the Mail, so here I go again:Can you tell me a trivia about vedalken orrery. As a kid this card blew my mind, since it allowed a completely different playstyle (such as flashing in creatures etc.)Thanks for all you do. :)

One of the things I like doing in artifact sets is designing build around artifacts, so I encouraged that in all three Mirrodin sets. I don’t remember whether or or someone else on my team made this card, but I’m pretty sure it got made in design. If we’d made it now, it have some cutesy design name like Flash Light. : )Happy Birthday!

Vedalken Characteristics

New 30 Aug 2022 Asked by sph3re 48 Comments

Afternoon, Mark! Been playing for... 7ish years now? Time flies. I've been reading up on MTG's colour philosophy lately and I'm curious about the Vedalken. Is there any interest in bringing them back as a characteristic race for Blue, even if it's only a secondary one? It seems like they fit Blue's "perfection through knowledge" philosophy pretty well!

That’s exactly what they were designed to do. Unfinity has some Vedalken. I hope to see more in other future sets.

I prefer four-armed Vedalken.

Potential Vedalken Appearance Soon

New 07 Jan 2022 Asked by zanthr 59 Comments

Can we see vedalken on a new plane in an upcoming set? They're easier to justify than aetherborn, and they haven't had a set be a good fit for them in a while. Here's hoping for New Capenna, maybe?

There might be a Vedalken in 2022. : )

Merfolk over Vedalken in Strixhaven

New 21 Nov 2021 Asked by sirpidge 41 Comments

Was there any particular reason for the presence of Merfolk in Strixhaven over Vedalken when from my perspective, Veldaken could fit the theme a bit better.

Yes, there are a lot of Merfolk fans.

Tribal Focused Set Possibility

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by thornthallid 40 Comments

Hi Mark. How likely is a heavily tribal focused set that tried to hit a few unusual tribes instead of the standard ones, just for a single set? e.g. the red tribe as dwarves, not goblins. Vedalken instead of merfolk, etc.

The problem is to properly make a tribal set work, we want members of those tribes seeded ahead of time, so we can focus on other creatures regularly used in that color, but it’s harder to stretch.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 71 Comments

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

Vedalken on the Beeble Scale

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by zanthr 29 Comments

Where are vedalken on the Beeble scale? Wherever they are, I'd like to have more Magic-specific creature types done more like them, as opposed to ones like Kavu, where they only show up on a single plane.

Vedalken are a 4. We do them from time to time.
