What makes masticore and manticore different creature types?

The same thing that makes Elves and Goblins different creature types. They’re different creatures.

Designing Masticore Nowadays

New 18 Mar 2022 Asked by annorax 26 Comments

If Masticore didn't exist and you were making that design for a set you're working on now, what would be different about it?

The power level would probably be a tad lower. : )

Origins of Masticore's Design

New 16 Mar 2022 Asked by magraal 52 Comments

"Mishra’s War Machine was my inspiration for designing a popular Magic card. What is it?" - Pretty sure this would have to be Masticore

Manticore is correct. We were in a meeting where I said I thought Mishra’s War Machine had an interesting drawback, and someone else said it was too big of a drawback and it would always make the card suck. I took it as a challenge that I could make a good card with that drawback, and that’s how Masticore came up be.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

Reserved List Test

New 22 Jun 2018 Asked by per-mariam-ad-jesum 37 Comments

How was Masticore printed in From the Vault?

We were testing the waters using a loophole in the Reserved List for premium cards. It went badly forcing us to remove the loophole.

Reserved List Query

New 21 Jun 2018 Asked by askdarkpony 21 Comments

Got a simple Reserved List question that popped in my head: could cards that where added there due power level and aren't from the original "it's a collection" list, like Masticore be reprinted in supplemental products, now that we have some that aren't related to Standard nor even Modern?

If it’s on the list, we can’t reprint it.

Gold-Bordered Decks Sales

New 23 Mar 2018 Asked by whatisjimithinking 29 Comments

Hi mark - was just wondering if there has been anything written about why the gold-bordered world championship decks are no longer made. I recently had a blast playing with the '99 series with my friends - it felt like a high powered duel deck series, and featured a lot of cards we don't normally see (for instance, I'd read Masticore was good, but didn't realize /how/ good in that environment!). Thanks :)

We stopped doing the for the number one reason we stop any product - bad sales. Not enough people bought them.

Signed Cards Gratitude

New 26 May 2016 Asked by dkirzane 26 Comments

And a follow-up to my story about Disenchant and Masticore: After you wrote 80,000 words--which included a plaintive picture inviting snail mail--I wrote you a letter and included some cards to sign. (This was, I believe, before sending you cards as much a "thing" as it is today.) I sent you some of my favorites--including a playset of Masticore and a playset of Verdant Force--and you did sign them all. I was delighted and still have every one. Thanks!

Shouldn't the artifact iconic be Masticore? They seem pretty iconic.

But we don’t make very many of them.

Reserve List Complaints

New 19 Apr 2014 Asked by kerrjf 19 Comments

Did you get any complaints about judge foils and FTV reprints violating the reserve list? Masticore and Memory Jar are in FTV, Wheel of Fortune and Thawing Glaciers were judge foils. There are also cases where a card was reprinted color shifted (Null Profusion/Recycle) or a strictly better version was reprinted (Altar of Bone/Eldamari's Call). The reserve list is hundreds of cards long, but the only ones that get any attention are the ABUR duals lands and the power 9.

We did get complaints which is why we aren’t using that Reserved List loophole any more.

Reserved List Loophole

New 16 Feb 2014 Asked by silver-spell 18 Comments

4 cards from FTV: Relics were on the Reserved List, including Karn, Masticore, Memory Jar and Mox Diamond. Doesn't this violate the terms of the reserved list? And how come this only happened in FTV: Relics?

We were experimenting with pushing a loophole. It went badly and we promised to never do it again.
