Question on Concordant Crossroads

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by deathworld12 5 Comments

is concordant crossroads a bend break or neither?

Green is secondary in haste. Usually granting the ability is more for the primary color than the secondary, but we do allow the secondary color to do it a little. The rate is probably too good, but that’s not a color pie issue.

Steps to Magic for Beginners

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by greggawatt 7 Comments

Following up on my "magic for beginners" question. I think jumpstart is great, but I'm envisioning a set that exists in a way that can add complexity for each level. Like you break out the set and it starts ok here are two 30 card decks with just creatures (and those creatures just have say, haste and flying), once you're good with that, you add in 10 sorcery cards that are easy to understand, then 10 enchantments, then 10 instants. I just feel like magic throws people in the deep end.

The interesting thing we’ve learned having explored this topic for over thirty years is players are more likely to continue playing if it’s a little above them, if they feel like there’s more things to learn. When we strip a lot of things out to simplify it, many players go, “That’s it?” and leave never to explore any deeper.

Possibility of Basic Evergreen Theme

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by cavegirlpoems 5 Comments

If/when: A set with a 'basic evergreen keywords matter' theme? Like "creatures you control with Lifelink get +1/+1" or "gets +1/+0 for each creature you control with haste", that sort of thing.

If. The as-fan of most creature keywords (with flying being the big exception) is just too low to mechanically care about them in limited.

Slickshot Show-Off's Abilities

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by prosperity-post 36 Comments

Slickshot Show-Off really didn't need +2/+0 for every noncreature spell for being a cheap creature with flying and haste. And what happened to abilities triggering only once each turn? This is ridiculous. Just give cheap creatures prowess and give something like this to more costlier creatures. We're past the Phyrexian arc, can we get back to a level of normalcy please?

It’s a rare costed for constructed formats. It gets to be very good in limited.

Red Double Tokens

New 13 May 2024 Asked by j-waffles 22 Comments

Could we see red double creature tokens if they go away at EOT?

If we did it, that’s the most likely way. It would obviously also give them haste.

Cauldron Dance Card Background

New 01 May 2024 Asked by arcanistlupus 30 Comments

Invoking the sacred rite of birthday trivia, do you have any trivia about Cauldron Dance? It's always been my favorite reanimation spell.

One of the things I enjoy is taking two effects that reflect one another on some vector. I had made Sneak Attack in Urza’s Saga and numerous one shot reanimation spells. I realized if I made the Sneak Attack effect return to hand at end of turn instead of sacrificing it, the two effects would put a creature from that zone on the battlefield with haste and then, at end of turn, return them to the zone it came from.Happy Birthday!

Color Access to Vigilance

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by jonscreenshow 35 Comments

I just watched the Good Mlrning Magic episode on Blue getting access to Vigilance. I've always felt like White makes a better choice as Haste's Tirtiary color than Black. My reasoning is that if you mix them both with Red, you get different playstyles. White/Red feels far more aggro compared to Black/Red. How do you feel about mono white Haste?

We try to keep aggro red and white off each other. Also, the reason haste is secondary in black is we need it for some reanimation effects.

Clarification in Card Instructions

New 23 Apr 2024 Asked by aaaaaa123456789 38 Comments

Since people seem to be complaining about extra words in cards ("cycle or discard", etc.), I've always wondered about my favourite redundant words: "if able". (For instance, "CARDNAME attacks each combat if able.") The effect would be exactly the same (rules-wise) if it merely said "CARDNAME attacks each combat". But I do wonder how many players would misplay it as if it granted haste if it was written that way!

It helps clarify there are times it doesn’t attack, so it prevents some of that mistake.

Plot and Haste Comparison

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by 22bebo 21 Comments

Mark, why doesn't plot grant haste to plotted creatures the way suspend does? It feels like the two mechanics would run into similar issues there.

It’s an expectation thing. Playtesters didn’t feel like it was supposed to have haste. I think you choosing when to cast it just felt different than the spell counting down.

Haste in Standard

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by radjanspiritmonger 27 Comments

Hi mark,I understand that aggro has its place in making sure games aren’t durdly but there’s just so much haste in standard that it feels like you can just throw them all in a deck and win. It’s especially prevalent in arena where you can blitz through games in minutes, and I just never feel like I see many other archetypes there these days. I know this is my anecdotal experience and I know that there are other decks out there. It just feels like mono red is making the environment unfun.
Thanks for listening.

Thanks for sharing. I do know there have been discussions lately about game speed.

Haste in Black Creatures

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by crusadingeggplant 35 Comments

hi Mark,I wanted to ask about Haste in Black. It just kinda hit me that for a while we had a few hasty creatures in mono-black.

Notably ELD had Rankle, Clackbridge Troll and Deathless Knight (green-black but can be played in mono-black). There's also Banehound in WAR and Vengeful Reaper in Kaldheim (which I probably played in standard more than it should be played tbh).

Was this an intentional experiment? A quirk of design that 'just happened' because its a tool that is always there and happened to be used more than usual? If it was an experiment, it seems like the verdict was 'no haste in black creatures', but I'd be interested in hearing more about it!

Haste is, and has been for a while, secondary in black. It’s used less than green these days which is also secondary in haste.

Coyote and Roadrunner Mechanics

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by nectar222 34 Comments

I love the little shoutout with Cunning Coyote and Resilient Roadrunner. Is there an internal codename keyword for the Roadrunner’s “can only be blocked by creatures with haste” activated ability?

Not really. It’s the “Gingerbrute ability”.

Token Name Harmonization

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by snowsuit-letter 39 Comments

Does R&D have any plans to harmonize the names and rules text of tokens, similar to what happened to creature types in Llorwyn? For instance, Thopter artifact creature tokens are usually 1/1 fliers, but Leonardo da Vinci makes 0/2 flying Thopters. So the name "thopter token" doesn't uniquely tell you what the rules text is. Likewise, there are 2/2 Knights with firs strike, 2/2 Knights with trample and haste, 1/1 colorless Spirits, 1/1 white Spirits, and many more examples.

We do within any one set, but we allow variance between sets.

Unblockable Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by escapingburger 46 Comments

Hello! When you have a "can't be blocked except by creatures with haste" effect as on Resilient Roadrunner, do you balance it as if it made the creature unblockable altogether? Or does it get discounted somewhat since haste is more common than, say, shadow or horsemanship?P.S.: Please distribute high fives for whoever's responsible for Prairie Dog (maybe it's you). I sent an ask maybe a year ago about expanding Magic's squirrel family, so I'm pretty pleased by this one.

It’s treated similar to can’t be blocked.High fives shall be delivered (not to me though).

Alter Creature Types

New 21 Mar 2024 Asked by cheesedurian2 35 Comments

Can Blue alter creature types in permanents? For example, Blue changes Lovisa Coldeyes to "Each creature that’s a Barbarian, a Warrior, or a FISH gets +2/+2 and has haste."

It could hack creature types in rules text.

Black Haste Usage

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by sniffnoy 24 Comments

Whatever happened to black haste? I noticed it's not mentioned in the recent Nuts & Bolts.

It’s still secondary in black, but used less often.

Favorite Trinket Text

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by mowu-moment 47 Comments

For my birthday trivia this year, do you have a favorite line of trinket text, and if so, what is it? I like Gingerbrute's "can't be blocked except by creatures with haste" myself :)

I’ve always enjoyed Baneslayer Angel’s protection from Demons and from Dragons.

Did you answer that question about Skeleton typal yesterday because you knew you'd hit us with this? Super excited already; dinosaur skeleton sounds particularly awesome. Great teasers!

Haste in White

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by charliechitty 31 Comments

Sergeant John Benton has haste. Given the only other white creature with haste is Akroma, a break you've admitted previously. Is this card also a break?

He’s also green and haste is secondary in green.

Potent Red Creature Query

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by mrmoustachemm 32 Comments

Re: the Goblin Guide ask, I think the asker just wants a 2/2 Haste for R without any other text. So, if/when on that?

If. A 2/2 for R, with no drawback, is already over the line.
