DFC History Correction

New 22 May 2024 Asked by allhailklisz 5 Comments

Hello! I just wanted to make a slight correction to yesterday's Making Magic article and its history of DFCs - you refer to Huatli, Poet of Unity as "the first creature that transformed into a Saga", but March of the Machine's Praetors formed an entire cycle of those.

Yes, I missed it.

Offensive Impulse Draw

New 18 May 2024 Asked by braveswordwielder 18 Comments

Isn’t “offensive impulse draw” basically the Urabrask, Heretic Praetor ability? Basically replacing a normal draw with an impulsive draw?

Replacing a draw makes it upside, which isn’t quite what was being asked.

Character Miniatures Possibility

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by thunderweb 72 Comments

If/when: plushies, miniatures, or action figures of Magic characters. (Personally I want Phyrexian Praetor plushies.)

When. We have made some over the years. I own a Fblthp plushie, for example.

Praetors Design Insight

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by tentativenewtype 70 Comments

Invoking the grand phenomena of Birthday Trivia, could you tell us something about the Phyrexian Praetors?
As an aside; had an absolute blast at OTJ prereleases, playing with merc tokens was the most fun I've had at a prerelease for a while.

The dual “I get an ability the buffs me and a second ability that’s a reflection that hurts my opponent” was the first thing I pitched for the Praetors. Everyone liked it, and we never looked back. Little did we know that we’d have to make more. : )Happy Birthday!

Urabrask Character Complexity

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by sobek16 65 Comments

When you created Urbask was it intended that many people would like him as a character and not see him as a villain?

He was, by design, the most relatable Praetor.

Urabrask's Praetorian Philosophy

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by thunderweb 84 Comments

Tomorrow is my second birthday since I have played Magic. Can you tell me about Urabrask, my favorite praetor, interacts with the other four?

Urabrask is the one Praetor who thinks people need to choose to become Phyrexian. The four other Praetors do not have this belief. Happy Birthday!

Serialized Cards Feedback

New 14 Jan 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 49 Comments

Hey Mark, I hope all is well.I'm reaching out to share a suggestion I'm hoping you can pass along to the appropriate channels if that is not you.I am a staunch Magic player but I also am an avid collector that very much enjoys collecting some of the most special and elusive versions of cards. The serialized cards in products like Ravnica Remastered would be much more enticing and I would be significantly more likely to spend more on products that contain them if they were more bespoke and distinct from the non serialized versions. The best way to do this would be by giving the serialized cards new unique art that isn't used on other versions of the card in the same set. This was done for the serialized original praetors in the March of the Machine set and it was extremely awesome but it has been the only time this has been done for serialized cards which are becoming much more frequent.Another option would be to have a specific treatment or frame that is exclusive to the serialized version of the card. For example, include regular and borderless frames for shock lands in the main Ravnica Remastered but have the retro framed shock lands exclusive for the serialized cards.Thoughts?

I can pass those thoughts along. Do others share this belief?

Phyrexia History Trivia

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by captainkranos 30 Comments

Ahh I forgot! Yesterday was my 21st birthday!Do you have any trivia on my favorite praetor, Urabrask? Or Phyrexia as a whole?Thank you Mark!!!

Phyrexia is Magic’s oldest villain, introduced in Antiquities, the second ever expansion. I was such a fan of them that I convinced Michael to make them the main villains in the Weatherlight Saga. Happy Birthday!

Partner Keyword Variant

New 16 Sep 2023 Asked by slak-jimundar 42 Comments

If or When; a Partner keyword variant where only one of the 2 commanders need to have the ability like Doctor's Companion but without the Doctor restriction. I.E. a red Partner that can pair with Atraxa, Praetors' Voice to make a 5 color deck.

If. I don’t think we want to make more partner without condition, nor want partner to enable five-color decks.

Renaming in Universes Within

New 21 Jul 2023 Asked by izzet-always-r-versus-u 31 Comments

If you were going to print a Universes Within version of, for instance, Mawloc (creature type Tyranid) or Triarch Praetorian (creature type Necron), you'd just rename the creature type the same way you'd rename the card, yes? (I remember this being answered at one point, but can't locate it, so a source I can cite would help a lot.)

Yes.

Looping Sagas Concept

New 28 Jun 2023 Asked by khaoskrtr 47 Comments

If/When: A never-ending or looping Saga.

The Praetors in March of the Machine are essentially looping Sagas.

Hybrid Design Terms

New 23 May 2023 Asked by j-waffles 20 Comments

Is there a name for cards that are top down AND bottom up? For example, you knew you wanted to make an elesh norn card in ONE; so that’s topdown. But you knew it had to mechanically match the other praetors, which is bottom up. “Outside in”? “Middle out”?

There’s not really a term, because you start from one end, even if you later adjust for the other end. Elesh Norn started as a bottoms up design.

Story Structure Suggestions

New 10 May 2023 Asked by cicakemlelo 47 Comments

Taking you up on the "eager for any feedback" part from your vision design handoff article!I know there are many other considerations involved (e.g. Phyrexia fatigue is a thing), but purely from a story perspective, it feels like it would've been better to split MOM up into two sets: the Phyrexians invade, and the Phyrexians are repulsed. As it is, it ended up feeling somewhat anticlimactic (for me, personally), like it was over before it even began. The 70-30 split didn't help matters much in this respect, either. (Yeah I know that's not the in-world balance, just the in-cards balance, because you told me, but otherwise as a player, where else am I supposed to get my impressions from?)If we still had a traditional block structure, this seems like it could've been a great fit for it: Act one, meet the Phyrexians; Act two, the Phyrexians invade; Act three, the Phyrexians are defeated. Alternatively, the "they invade" part could've been pulled forward into ONE, or the "they're defeated" part could've been pushed back into Aftermath thereby turning it into a full set (though that's basically the same three set structure again).I also have a question: Did you all have similar debates internally, or was everyone in agreement that the set/story structure as actually released was the way to go?(And to add something positive: the Saga-Transforming Praetors are truly excellent!)

We didn’t want the war part being more than one set.

Sieges Transformation Logic

New 29 Apr 2023 Asked by cogito-ergo-sam 61 Comments

For my birthday trivia, can I ask why sieges are *cast* transformed as opposed to the praetors, flip walkers, etc?

It’s so the back face can be instants or sorceries.

Werewolves in MOTM

New 22 Apr 2023 Asked by summonsequence 42 Comments

Any particular reason we didn’t see any werewolves during March of the Machine? Were there any designed for the set that got cut?

The double-faced cards have specific uses (being Phyrexianized, Praetors, battles, incubate, etc.) in the set, so it wasn’t a good fit.

Praetor Ability Counters

New 19 Apr 2023 Asked by gottagetsomegreene 49 Comments

Hi maro! Quick rules question! How do ability counter work with the flip praetors like urabrask? Would he keep a deathtouch or lifelink counter after he flips? If so would those counters affect the damage of the first lore ability?

The MOM Praetors don’t transform, they are exiled and recast, so any counters fall off.

Elesh Norn's Mana Cost

New 19 Apr 2023 Asked by uniquesandwichdreamer 154 Comments

Is there any particular reason why Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines is the only Praetor (including Ebon,Sanguine and Gix) to not have double colored pips in her casting cost? is it a card spacing thing? if so is that something that often has mechanical influence?

The card was called Norn, Mother of Machines for most of design. At the slide show, a number of people made the note that the card needed to be called Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines as all the other Praetors had their full name. Adding in “Elesh” meant we only had room for two mana pips, one of which had to be generic mana, so she changed from 3WW to 4W.So, why is Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines the only Praetor with a single color pip? Typography.

Incubate Tokens Query

New 16 Apr 2023 Asked by niuttuc 57 Comments

Had a great time at prerelease! Incubate played better than I expected in practice, though a piece of feedback, many players there were confused with Incubate tokens being able to flip at instant speed when every other "pay-to-transform" card in the set (the Phyrexian mana ones and the praetors) have a sorcery speed restriction. Was that difference conscious?

Yes. They tried incubate tokens at sorcery speed and they played a lot worse.

Praetors in Draft
