Rangers as Universes Beyond

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by consequencenotwithstanding 13 Comments

Hey Mark! My partner had asked me if MMPR would be capable of becoming a Universes Beyond set, and given that I know nothing about how or why you can/can't work with certain properties to make products, I thought I'd ask you.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are capable of becoming a Universes Beyond.

Ranger vs Scout

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by asp3rg3r-deactivated20240415 40 Comments

Hey Mark. What's the difference between Ranger and Scout creature types?

Scouts are more about going ahead and getting intel on what’s upcoming. Rangers have an affinity with nature and are skilled craftspeople.

Community UB Requests

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by thewonko 39 Comments

Well, if today is UB wishlist time, my pod has mentioned recently some things they'd like to see

Avatar (The Last Airbender, not the James Cameron one) - Lots of elemental magic, soldiers, monks, and weird magical creatures

Discworld - A Magic-adjacent genre space, plus fans who are very passionate about it.

Star Wars - We're getting a Space Opera set next year, and what's a Jedi but a Space Monk?

Power Rangers - Transforming legendary creatures! Giant robots! Other Giant Robots made of the first giant robots! (This is a direct quote from the person who said she wanted to see Power Rangers)

Thanks.

Creature Type Errata Rules

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by tomwpost 29 Comments

I thought the general rule was that if an old card had a new creature type in the name, it got that creature type added to the card. See: Dread Warlock, and the abundance of Ranger cards. It makes sense not to do functional errata on things like Jacob or Eloise but I guess I'm not seeing why Dogged Detective doesn't fit that rule

The rule is *if* we choose to errata a creature type, we usually do creatures with that creature type in its name.

Universes Beyond Color Matching

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by sword-of-pride-and-prejudice 43 Comments

When designing for Universes Beyond, how do you manage when Magic colours don't line up to the other IP's colours? For example you might want to print a Black Power Ranger card, who typically would not jive with black mana in-universe but it might be just jarring to see "Black Ranger, 2WW"

One of the rules of Universes Beyond is characters with a Magic color in their name, don’t have to be that color. A corollary: characters known for wearing a certain Magic color, don’t have to be that color.

could i suggest universes beyond for chronicles of narnia (on my own behalf) and power rangers (on my fiance's behalf)? :-)

You may. : )

Power Rangers Crossover

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by player4our 37 Comments

Hypothetical. I would love to see a Power Rangers UB crossover someday. If that were to happen, is it possible to create or modify "Morph" to make the 2/2 an actual creature type, such as a human? This is presumption, I'm just curious if that's something that's possible or if it would need a different type of morph. Or if you'd just forgo that and do transforming cards. The long story short is please make a Power Rangers UB

It would be easier to have a legendary creature that makes facedown creatures Human than to change the rules for all morph creatures, many of which creatively are not Human. I can add your request to the list of desired Universe Beyond properties.

Tribal Support Future

New 24 May 2023 Asked by banjo-blog 36 Comments

What are the odds that we'll see more tribal support for creature types like Druid and Ranger in the future?

Magic’s a hungry monster and players like “creature type matters” as a theme.

Color Pair Assignments

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by venedrex 123 Comments

Hey Mark, bit of a random/long question, but could I ask you what two-color pair you would put each of the following ten classes into, assuming one color pair for each class: Warriors, Rogues, Wizards, Clerics, Rangers, Knights, Monks, Warlocks, Shamans, and Druids. I've been wrestling with this question for a while and I'm completely stumped, so I figured I'd ask you! Thanks!

Normally we choose our creature types to match the colors, so we have a balanced collection. Your ten skew towards certain colors, but I’m up for a challenge. Assuming we have to use these ten and we’re trying to make it as backwards compatible as possible, here’s my guess:white/blue - Monkblue/black - Rogueblack/red - Warlockred/green - Shamangreen/white - Rangerwhite/black - Clericblue/red - Wizardblack/green - Knightred/white - Warriorgreen/blue - DruidKnight’s the odd fit, but thanks to Throne of Eldraine, there are Knights in all the colors.

Characters Outfits and Colors

New 02 May 2022 Asked by blaze-1013 38 Comments

About why Magic characters tend to have outfits reflective of their colors, that is a pretty common thing for character design in media. Power Rangers for example has long done this.

Yeah, it’s far from a Magic exclusive thing.

Future Mount Mechanic

New 13 Dec 2021 Asked by spyrohawk 49 Comments

If/When: A mechanic that lets one creature ride another? I'm mainly thinking along the lines of Knights or Rangers riding Horses or Rhinos or other mounts without needing the Horsemanship keyword. Maybe some sort of Mutate variant?

We call it the “mount” mechanic in R&D and I’m sure there will come a world where it makes sense to finally solve it.

Playing Cards from Library

New 19 Oct 2021 Asked by blind42-blog 56 Comments

You had "playing cards from the top of your library" as primary for none, and secondary for all. We've seen this effect almost exclusively done in Green. We even have Ranger Class, Realmwalker, and Augur of Autumn in Standard right now as the only three with the ability to play cards off the top. Are we to expect this in other colors to start trickling in soon, or should the original statement be changed to reflect Green as primary?

Don’t confuse who’s allowed to do it with who has done it most, especially on really rare abilities.

White's Future Abilities

New 18 Oct 2021 Asked by hiygamer 24 Comments

In the new colour pie article, you list playing cards off the top of your library as secondary in white. As far as I know, Verge Rangers is the only thing like that white has at the moment. Does this mean that we can expect to see more things like it in white going forward?

I said all colors have access to it if they’re playing things in color. Note it’s not something we do very much in any color.

Variety vs Party Support

New 17 Oct 2021 Asked by reginakasteen 49 Comments

To put the structural support party needs in perspective, ZNR has over 90 creatures with the party types, over half the creatures in the set. In contrast, AFR has only 29. So about 60 creatures would've had to be party-supporting types instead of the great variety they actually were. For instance, rangers and bards might not have been able to be included if their slots were taken up by party classes.

Future of Archer Class

New 19 Jul 2021 Asked by gojaimas 50 Comments

Are there any plans to discontinue Archer as a supported class? We have Rangers now, and we were already seeing bow-wielding creatures that weren't Archers in previous sets, such as Jaspera Sentinel.

Not every person with a bow is a Ranger.

Creatures in Conventional Expansions

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by snescontroller 36 Comments

Can I get an In/When on the following creatures from AFR showing up in a conventional Magic expansion: gnolls, humanoid dragons (with the dragon subtype), gnomes (non-artifact), halflings.

The D&D specific things aren’t going to show up in non-D&D Magic sets. Things like Bard and Ranger should show up though. Non-artifact Gnomes already exist - Quarum Trench Gnomes from Legends, but I could see a new world with them.
