Color with Most Free Spells

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by zombsidian 4 Comments

Is there any color that flavorfully gets more access to more "free" spells?

Blue, by a little (if you count making other spells “free”). We don’t do a lot of “free” spells.

Grand Calcutron Play Query

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by furious-jorg 1 Comments

Asking for a friend:If The Grand Calcutron is in play, can foretell and plot abilities be activated from the program?

The Grand Calcutron only affects how you cast spells from your hand, so no.

Black Spell Control Mechanisms

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by irlnautica 5 Comments

Would a black spell or effect that lets you take control of a permanent be an acceptable bend? I know taking control is usually blue or red, but it doesn't feel like a break because black can already cast other players' spells.

We let black mess with other people’s stuff, but more often from the graveyard or their library.

Keywording Bloomburrow mechanic

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by hexooze 6 Comments

Has R&D ever considered keywording the Bloomburrow "Season of" cycle type of modal mechanic like Spree? If not, is there an official name or r&d slang for these spells?

We don’t really have a name for that style of mechanic and didn’t try to keyword it to the best of my knowledge.

Regeneration and Removal Spells

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by duckily 4 Comments

re: "more regeneration hosers than regeneration effects" early removal spells were printed with "no regeneration" clauses because the primary use case of regeneration was to survive damage, such as from combat or a lightning bolt, rather than to survive a destroy spell

I don’t believe that was the intent, but it is how it played out.

Shift in Green removal Cards

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by hedgeiii 5 Comments

Hey, Mark! Quick one- I've been noticing a lot of "bite" cards in green (i.e. Hunter's Talent) the last few years, and not as many fight cards. At first, I thought this was "too much", but I quickly realized the hoop for green removal is already pretty daunting, and maybe this is just the direction you're going in.
Am I reading this right?

We have been increasing the number of “bite” spells (deal damage equal to power) to help with green removal in limited.

Balancing Player Wants and Design

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by princevogelfrei 4 Comments

"The issue is many players enjoy the higher powered designs of the straight to modern sets." I think there is a larger issue, but its impossible to capture given the character limit. There is an article from 2019 by Jeff Cunningham called "Lands and Spells" I would love if you could read just the section that starts with "I asked Randy Buehler once.." and ends with "Taking in the big picture.." ...Does the game designer have any business designing beyond what the most customers want? I think yes

I went and read the section in the article you mentioned. My primary goal as Head Designer is to make Magic the best game it can be. Market research (along with talking with all of you here) helps inform our choices, by giving us a better understanding of what the players want.Good game design isn’t just doing what the players want though. We need to surprise you and push the game in directions you don’t expect, but I am, and the rest of R&D, are negligent in our duties as game designers if we don’t have a good understanding of what the players interests in the game are when we plan out future designs.

Batching Cards Potential?

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 1 Comments

Hi Mark, could the rules batch cards that have two different spells on them? Can they mechanically group together split cards, certain MDFCs, cards with adventures?

We for sure can list it out. I don’t know if the rules can handle the description.

Powerless Creature Possibility

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by philosophile42 5 Comments

Would the rules support a creature with no power in the P/T box, and only toughness? So, it would be unable to gain more power with pump spells or equipment? I was just trying to imagine the ultimate pacificist creature.

The rules require each creature to have power and toughness. It can be 0, but it has to be something.

Impact on Storm Scale

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by tarotbycharles 0 Comments

Since the upcoming Ral, Crackling Wit card makes it possible to give your spells Storm does that in any way impact the Storm Scale?

It does not. As I said a few months ago. The name of a scale getting printed is not going to change the name of the scale. 10’s can happen.

Designing Alania, the Divergent Storm

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by junejulyaugustdecember 3 Comments

Hi Mark! Bloomburrow looks amazing from the previews we've seen, hope you're all feeling pleased with the reactions. I had a question about Alania, the Divergent Storm - was the card originally designed to give "gift a card" to your spells? The wording for it feels really similar.

That’s where we started, but the rules/templating didn’t allow it, so we had to use slightly different rules text.

Expend Mechanic's Wording

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by moonsliceman 25 Comments

May I request some detail about why expend is templated this way? I think it's a very cool mechanic, but it reads like it cares about you doing something four times rather than having done something a fourth time.

It’s not about doing it a fourth time. It’s talking about casting some number of spells with a combined mana value of 4 or greater.

On Spells and Green Color

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by flakmaniak 5 Comments

Are bite spells that can hit players in-pie for green? Obviously they're in-pie for red... Also on the topic of green spells hitting players (though largely an unrelated question), spells like Hurricane. Which is the bigger issue with them: Hitting players unconditionally being out-of-pie for green, or the "killing everyone" gameplay issue? I assume those are both significant.

They are not in pie for green.

Stack Interaction and Color Pie

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by snea-zel 5 Comments

Why does only blue have the ability to interact with the stack (aside from red copying spells)? Seems like a huge disadvantage to every other colour that they have nothing ressembling a counterspell. It makes sense for blue to be the best at it, but if every colour has creature removal why can't every colour have spell removal? Or even just some other colours?

Different colors have access to different things. It’s key to how the color pie works. Stack interaction is a pretty narrow design space by the way.

Tokens and Rules Possibility

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by theblowjobbrothershave 6 Comments

Would something like ' counts as a token for spells and abilities' be possible within the rules?

My hunch given what I know about Claire D'Loon, Joy Sculptor is no.

Accelerationism in Magic Design

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by woihtmmd 16 Comments

I'm a Magic accelerationist. I want you to keep going into more extreme places as long as you design for fun, respect the color pie, keep dexterity checks in Unsets, stay out of the real world, keep the lands/spells/abilities/stack/phases/priority thing, and don't print offensive cards.

All fair things to ask.

Freerunning versus Prowl

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by fisyx 7 Comments

Do you have any insight as to why the team for ACR went with "freerunning" as the mechanic vs using "prowl" and making the spells "kindred instant/sorcery - Assassin"? Obviously with the commander clause its different, but they've talked about how that was added later on.

We use kindred very infrequently.

Detailing Land to Spell Conversions

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by livbrazilian 4 Comments

if/when: we have spells that are land on the back, how about the other way around? lands that are spells on the back?

Putting lands on the front introduces play design concerns as it let’s you use land tutoring to get spells. It would force us to greatly lessen the power of the card to balance it.

Potential Colorless Enchantment Spells

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by roastedgravy 0 Comments

If/When: Deciduous colorless enchantment spells?

Colorless is already deciduous. And enchantments are evergreen. So, I think it will happen. I’m not sure it will become a regular thing, but who know?

Prized Cursed Recording

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by theindigosystem 2 Comments

Hey, Mark? Cursed Recording feels made for me personally, it's a splashy cursed VHS tape a la analog horror that copies spells once per turn with a huge downside, tons of flavor, for my deck of choice. Just wanted to say that wow, I love this card. Who made it, and can you give them a high-five?

Will do.
