Speculating on Future Game Mechanics

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by melancholia-ennui 4 Comments

If/when: An instant that becomes stronger or gains an additional effect when cast at a time you could cast a sorcery - similar to Addendum, but requiring an empty stack as well?

If. I’m skeptical we’ll ever require an empty stack.

Least Popular 'A' Mechanic

In the mechanics popularity list, what is the least popular mechanic that starts with an A?

Addendum from Ravnica Allegiances.

Returning RNA's Mechanics

Is there any chance for RNA's mechanics, such as Adapt, Afterlife, Addendum, etc. to ever return?

There is.

Favorite Mechanics or Cards

New 23 May 2020 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 136 Comments

I feel like a lot of people who say you’ve only done bad for the game don’t realize you’re probably behind some of their favorite mechanics or cards too. For a change of pace, can you list some beloved mechanics or cards you’re responsible for?

Here are the Magic mechanics I’ve had a hand in creating: Absorb, Addendum, Affinity, Aftermath, Aura Swap, Battle Cry, Bolster, Champion, Changeling, Cipher, Companion, Contraptions, Crew (Vehicles), Dash, Deathtouch, Delve, Dredge, Embalm, Energy, Entwine, Evoke, Exert, Exploit, Fabricate, Fateful Hour, Fateseal, Ferocious, Flashback, Flip, Forecast, Fortify, Frenzy, Gotcha, Graft, Gravestorm, Heroic, Hexproof, Host/Augment, Hybrid Mana, Imprint, Infect, Intimidate, Kicker, Landfall, Lifelink, Living Weapon, Madness, Manifest, Mentor, Modular, Monstrosity, Morbid, Morph, Multikicker, Mutate, Ninjitsu, Phyrexian Mana, Poisonous, Populate, Proliferate, Prowl, Raid, Rally, Reach, Recover, Reinforce, Retrace, Ripple, Shroud, Soulbond, Splice, Split Cards, Split Second, Suspend, Transfigure, Transform, Typecycling, Undying, Unearth, Vanishing and Wither.

Return of Storm Scale Articles

New 01 May 2020 Asked by thelyca 36 Comments

What ever happened to the Storm Scale articles on the wizards website? Will they ever return? (The last one was about Kaladesh and Amonkhet) They were very intriguing and insightful. Can we get storm scalings at least for Ixalan and beyond? Namely Explore, Enrage, Ascend, Mentor, Surveil, Jump-start, Undergrowth, Adapt, Addendum, Afterlife, Riot, Spectacle, Amass, Escape, Keyword Counters, Mutate, and Companion.

I’ll do other Storm Scale articles.

Balanced Power Level Outlook

New 30 Apr 2020 Asked by rasalhage 103 Comments

addendum: Only the cards I like should be pushed in power level. The cards I don't like should remain weak.

Players like strong cards in their decks, but not their opponent’s. : )

Character Fatalities

New 11 Dec 2019 Asked by gophilipbowles 62 Comments

"Game of Thrones and Walking Dead are the outliers. Most ongoing shows don’t kill all their main characters." Killing a few characters here and there when their story reaches a natural conclusion is something entirely different. At the end of the first Dragonlance trilogy, Weiss and Hickman wrote an addendum explaining their decision to kill a popular character, and pointed out that it's precisely because characters are popular that it's meaningful when they die.

A major member of the Gatewatch died. We’re not unwilling to kill major characters, but it’s not something we do lightly.

Addendum Counterspell Idea

New 06 Mar 2019 Asked by maxbowarrow 34 Comments

Following up on the counterspell with Addendum question, I think it got mixed up with Jump-Start😅 I was thinking something along the lines of "if you cast this spell on your main phase, it costs 1 less", or maybe just cantrip. Addendum felt like choosing between instant/sorcery speed, even though technically you can still cast them at instant speed on your main phase, and I thought a counterspell could be a nice design in that space.

You’re right, I was thinking of Jumo Start. The problem with a counterspell Addendum card is it’s very narrow.

Absent Counterspell Addendum

New 06 Mar 2019 Asked by maxbowarrow 27 Comments

I'm a bit sad there wasn't a counterspell with Addendum in RNA. Was such an idea ever brought up?

Flashbacking counterdpells have burned us in the past, so it wasn’t something we wanted to do. I’m not sure if it came up.

Guild Synergy Explanation

New 05 Jan 2019 Asked by verygoodtom 34 Comments

I can't quite see the mechanical overlap between Azorius and its partner guilds. I get Simic/Gruul (+1/+1 counter synergy) and Rakdos/Gruul (Riot enables spectacle). I don't get Orhov/Rakdos either, but Azorius doesn't seem to have much to offer either Orzhov or Simic. Is this because the right cards haven't been spoiled yet, or is there another reason?

Addendum is more done through the executions of individual cards to create synergy.
By the way, Afterlife makes 1/1 fliers. Evasion combos well with Spectacle.

Addendum Mechanic Success

New 23 Dec 2018 Asked by tbjanowski 34 Comments

If addendum cards are widely played in standard but rarely if ever used for the addendum effect is it still a successful mechanic?

If a mechanic is never used (or heavily influence how the game is played) it generally is not considered a success.

Supplemental Set Backs

New 27 Apr 2018 Asked by mcatoms 45 Comments

What’s the chance of getting a supplemental set that uses a new/different card back? Maybe something with reprints and includes a rules addendum that says if you use sleeves then these cards are legal for tournament play...

You made Unstable cry. (Contraptions have a different back.)

B&R Update Frustration

New 27 Apr 2017 Asked by tomblelog 74 Comments

Feedback on the B&R addendum, even though I know it's nothing to do with you. I'm really, really disappointed and frustrated with how that was handled. No, I'm not quitting Magic. I might even keep playing Standard. But really, a scheduled B&R update and then TWO DAYS later, you change it? Way to destroy consumer confidence.

Would you have been happier if we realized our mistake and then waited until the next banning window to fix it?

Counter Spell Nuance

New 23 Mar 2017 Asked by gigaguessmtg 36 Comments

Addendum to the Frankie question: if my opponent asks me if I'm going to counter his next spell, and I say no. He goes to kill my creature and I give it Hexproof, would you say I "countered" it?

I would not. Frankie Peanut involves vernacular comprehension.

Silver Border Rule

New 24 Dec 2015 Asked by viseling 24 Comments

"1. You may play any copy of a card that shares a name with a tournament legal card.2. You can’t play silver bordered cards in non Un-tournaments.".... aw come on. this is not Really a problem! A simple addendum to rule 2 like: '...except when this would contradict rule 1' solves this strawman 'conundrum'. Or, reprint the black border cards in an un-style, and in an un-set, but with black borders. The full art basic lands from the unsets proves that this can be done, and they are wildly popular.

The full art lands were always black border even in the Un-sets. The whole point of silver border is so you don’t have to learn card by card which can and can’t be played. That rule is far more important than having a black bordered Un-card.

Mars Tournament Preparation

New 12 May 2013 Asked by ransomtime 15 Comments

Elvish House Party using Earth time is going to mean Magic will have problems when we colonise Mars and want to start running silver-bordered tournaments. What steps is Wizards doing to try and address this?

See the Mars addendum to the Unhinged FAQ.
