Captain Sisay Trivia

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by elmarcodepico 16 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday today! Can I please have some trivia about Captain Sisay? Thank you!

Captain Sisay was the one Weatherlight crew member that Michael and I didn’t create. She and the Weatherlight were created as part of the Mirage story.Happy Birthday!

Hymn to Tourach Trivia

New 28 May 2024 Asked by bokkiedoke 30 Comments

Hello fellow May birthday haver! For my birthday trivia I'd like something about Hymn to Tourach or random discard in general, since it's my favorite effect in Magic. On a related note, I'm super excited to play with Crabomination!

The effect of Hymn to Tourach on the game soured us on random discard as it too often led to game losses to mana screw. It led to us making a rule that we only use random discard at a high enough mana value, that it most likely isn’t hitting land.Happy Birthday!

Vehicle Crew Abilities Possibility

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by gibbons56-blog 27 Comments

Could crewing vehicles / mounting mounts ever give abilities to the crew / rider?

Because they have to be tapped, it’s hard to give them abilities for the turn that are relevant. I could imagine giving them something that’s more relevant longterm like counters.

Crew and Saddle Idea

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by shadowstar91 31 Comments

For the potential design idea of a card that could understandably have both Crew and Saddle, it wouldn't really work. In order to Saddle it, it has to be a creature and if it's a creature then it doesn't need Crew. And then going through the trouble to first Crew it and then to Saddle it also doesn't seem like it'd have a lot of design space for *why* you'd want to do it other than to simply say "We did it." And as the first Tibalt proved, doing something just to say you did is often bad design.

I agree I’m not sure it’s a hill worth climbing.

Vehicle Saddle Possibility

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by raytyger 46 Comments

Could a vehicle have a Saddle ability on top of a Crew ability?

I’m not sure what the point of doing that would be.

Crovax Story Arc

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by wherehavealltheuswrnamesgone 36 Comments

What was your plan for Crovax in the original Weatherlight story?

He became part of the crew. We wanted all five Magic colors, and colorless/artifacts, represented, but feel they wouldn’t let a Vampire join them. So, we wanted Crovax to prove himself before being turned into a Vampire, so there was a reason for him to stay.

Saddle Mechanic Origins

New 03 Apr 2024 Asked by drchipmunk 38 Comments

Since almost all Saddle abilities only apply when the mount attacks, why wasn't it made into an attack trigger (whenever you attack, you may tap creatures you control with total power X or greater)?

We were trying to parallel crew as much as we could to help make it easier to learn.

Saddle vs Crew

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by strymon 36 Comments

I was interested to see that Saddle can only be activated at ‘Sorcery Speed’. If you could go back, would you have made Crew function the same way? I would have expected the two to work similarly. I guess with how the mounts are functioning, being able to activate it at instant speed is kind of meaningless, except I suppose to Saddle in response to removal.

We need crew to function that way because we want Vehicles to be able to block. Saddled creatures can naturally do that, and the effects we want for saddle are more offensive in nature.

Luxurious Locomotive Restriction

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by luckylooter 35 Comments

Hello Mark! Can you explain why Luxurious Locomotive has the "Crew only once each turn" restriction?

So you don’t crew it with every creature you have and create a huge amount of Treasure.EDIT: It seems I might not have the right answer. I’ll ask.

Saddle Mechanic Explanation

New 27 Mar 2024 Asked by blind42-blog 27 Comments

Another rules question for you. Unlike Crew, Saddle's reminder text doesn't specify that the creatures you tap must be untapped. Does this mean that you can pay a saddle cost with creatures that are already tapped?

No, you cannot. You can’t pay a cost with something you don’t have.

Story vs Mechanics

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by badgerbattalion 32 Comments

Hey Maro,Super happy to see cool mechanics coming through in OOTJ. Very pumped for saddle!I’m going to hold out hope for some lore about OOTJ, but I feel like it’s going to bother me and others if there isn’t an explanation for certain characters showing up on the plane. I get that this is the villains set, so it makes sense to put them in, but I guess I thought it would be limited to Oko and his crew. For example, I wasn’t expecting to see the Gitrog out in the badlands and would really like to know if there’s an in universe explanation beyond “it’s cool and fits” That being said it looks like a slam dunk western execution on first glance! Thanks for all that you do.

When cool thing that players will adore pushes up against “it’s a bit of a stretch for this to have happened”, we err towards the former. Story serves the set more than the set serves story.

Villains and Morality

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 53 Comments

"They have all quite literally committed crimes." So? Heroes often break laws and villains sometimes use the law for their ends. Next you'll tell us that the lawyers say not to commit delicious crimes.

Being a villain doesn’t mean you have to be unlikeable or not a protagonist. Oceans 11 is a villains heist story, but the whole crew is generally likeable and you root for them. That said, the core of the story is they are committing a crime. Yes, against an unsympathetic character, but none the less they are breaking the law.

Random Discard Policy

New 05 Mar 2024 Asked by philosophile42 40 Comments

Is “opponent discards a random card” an effect that is just not going to be used anymore, or could red perhaps get this slice of pie?

We don’t like doing cheap randomized discard because of its ability to mana screw players. It’s not a color pie thing.

Weatherlight Saga Original Vision

New 06 Feb 2024 Asked by ultwarrior 50 Comments

Invoking the hallowed and ancient rite of birthday trivia, I was wondering if there was anything new you could share about your original vision for the end of the Weatherlight Saga? Failing that, is there a villain in Magic's past that you personally would like to see return?

Our original pitch was for a three-year story (with the idea that we’d tell more stories; this was the first story arc). Year one was Rath. It mostly matched with what happen save Crovax going evil and killing Mirri.Year two was Mercadia. A completely different story, and a very different world from what was made.Year three was Dominaria, but in the future. The crew returned to warn Dominaria about the upcoming Phyrexian invasion only to learn the portal they traveled through sent through time and the Phyrexians have already taken over Dominaria. The crew is able to defeat both the Phyrexians (using the hourglass pendant to rewind time) and Volrath who is aboard the ship disguised as Tahngarth.Happy Birthday!

Weatherlight Saga Trivia

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by yellowfoliage 14 Comments

It's my birthday today! Could you please share some trivia about either Weatherlight or Fifth Edition, the two sets that I bought cards from when I first started playing?

When Michael and I first pitched the Weatherlight Saga, our story started with Tempest, but the brand manager of Magic, at the time. was so eager to start, he made us write a precursor story to explain how the crew got together.Happy Birthday!

Vanguard Cards Background

New 06 Jan 2024 Asked by n7-retroninja-blog 26 Comments

Can I request birthday trivia for the oversized cards that went with the Weatherlight crew that modified your life total/hand size, and gave you a special ability?I think they were called Vangaurd cards?

They were called Vanguard cards. They were done in conjunction with an in-store program. The were four groups of them, each with eight cards. All of them were tied to The Weatherlight Saga, although the first two were more crew connected and the last two were more Urza connected. I was actually lead on the larger Vanguard project.Happy Birthday!

Crew-Based Ability

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by kilo-pascal 28 Comments

Could a creature have an ability that cares about which or how many other creatures crew the same vehicle it does?

I think it could, but it’s super niche-y. It would need to be in a set with a higher than average amount of Vehicles.

Vehicles Crewing Themselves

New 21 Nov 2023 Asked by herecomedatbiggay-blog 35 Comments

Can vehicles crew themselves once they've been turned into a creature? I have a Magda commander deck this comes up in, but I looked it up and it seems like the rules changed so you can't, but the vehicles in LCI have the rule text such that you can.

I believe animated Vehicles can crew other Vehicles, but not themselves. Not 100% sure on this.

Mechanics With Zero

New 13 Nov 2023 Asked by thunderweb 48 Comments

Can mechanics with numbers have the number zero? (e.g. crew, amass, casualty, incubate, backup, descend, discover, etc.)

It depends on the mechanic. Some can, some can’t (or it wouldn’t practically mean anything).

Typal Support Praise

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by sjk9000 51 Comments

I just want to say I really appreciate how many cards in the the commander precons offer double typal support, even for types not in the precon. Skeleton Crew working with pirates and skeletons, Deeproot Historian working with Merfolk and and druids; that sort of thing. High fives to the design team responsible.

High fives to be passed along.
