Excitement for Bloomburrow

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by kwain-itinerant-meddler 1 Comments

Wazzzaaaaap, Mark da Shark,Just wanted to send kudos and share my excitement about so much of Bloomburrow! It's gonna be my first prerelease in a long while, since M20, I think, as well as there's so many things to love about it. I've been a big fan of Doug Beyer since Kaladesh, glad he was the lead designer on this set. Also super pumped to be getting both a revisit to the Heroic mechanic in Valiant, one of my favorite mechanics from Theros, and the amount of rabbit typal support. My Cadira commander deck is gonna go through a major redesign when the set is properly out. Hope you have a lovely day!

I’m glad you’re so excited. I can’t wait to hear all the prerelease stories.

Request for Good Demon Cards

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by light-wolf 10 Comments

Hey Mark! We've seen evil angels in Magic many, many times, but not really the opposite counterpart. Can I request unambiguously heroic/good demons for a change? At least one? As a treat?

Success of Valiant Versus Heroic

If Valiant is successful are we less likely to see Heroic?

Probably. I think valiant plays better than heroic.

Future Set's Heroic Rework

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 9 Comments

FYI on May 16th I asked that given how disguise reworks morph and the dev issues with heroic, what would you consider changing to rework heroic. You replied “there is an upcoming set that answers that very question”. I presumed you were referring to a Marvel set, but qanadhar left a comment certain it was Bloomburrow. Just some of the fun foreshadowing of Blogatog. :)(I presume there’s an article or podcast that explains the rework soon?)

Next week’s article talks about the mechanics. Short version: heroic looked into allowing abilities, but there existed things you could repeatedly activate for 0, so we left it off. Valiant added abilities back in to help it trigger more, and used the once a turn restriction to deal with the problem interactions.

Understanding Heroic Versus Valiant

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 15 Comments

What made you guys nerf Heroic into Valiant instead of just using Heroic?

Valiant is better in most cases than heroic. No nerfing. Triggering off of abilities is a big upgrade.

Perceived Valiant Weakness Explained

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by lylethebloody 8 Comments

Valiant feels pretty bad when Heroic exists.... I'd rather have an ability with a little less punch that I get every time.

Valiant will trigger more times per game than heroic in most decks.

Heroic Mechanic Limitations

New 16 May 2024 Asked by 22bebo 1 Comments

What issues does heroic have?

It’s just a bit narrow in usage, so a set has to be built around it to make it work.

Reworking Heroic

New 16 May 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 10 Comments

Much like how disguise reworked morph to help solve the 2/2 for 3 issue, if you could rework heroic, what would you do differently? What’s R&D’s thoughts on the play/design issues that have come to light as the game has developed as a whole?

There is a set upcoming that examines that very question.

Mechanics Preferences

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by papyrustapirus 38 Comments

I would like to see more mechanics that don't count times, I prefer Surge over Storm, and Crime over Heroic.

We have found that usually leads to better game play, so it’s become our default (which we do break at times).

Justification for Heroic Intervention

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by azetsu222 35 Comments

Why is Heroic Intervention a green card? The name and effects look more whire for me

The card mechanic is perfectly in color pie. I agree the name leans white.

Heroic Mechanic Appreciation

New 27 Aug 2023 Asked by fantasticterrarium 34 Comments

I know you're always looking for opinions on mechanics, so I just want to say I really enjoy heroic and hope it comes back. It makes pump spells and auras far more rewarding and less feel bad to play. It plays so well that I'd make it evergreen if it were up to me.

It requires a lot of structural support, but perhaps we’ll find a home for it again.

Struggle for Historic

New 10 Jun 2023 Asked by johnjanuarius 49 Comments

I would have figured landfall was the mechanic you "had to fight tooth and nail to get in." Was historic that much harder to convince the rest of Wizards about than landfall?

I barely got historic in Dominaria. I had to do extensive work to prove to Bill Rose, the VP of R&D, that it deserved to be there:

Heroic Mechanic Absence

New 28 May 2023 Asked by godkingjinping 39 Comments

Why hasn't heroic in theros beyond death

On a return, we can only do so many returning mechanics, because we need to leave room for new things. We decided devotion and constellation were more important to include.

Location of Heroic

Where is heroic

In Theros block.

Significant Others Shoutout

New 05 Nov 2022 Asked by krinstranger 30 Comments

My birthday was a few days ago. I don't have a trivia request, but I wanted to say that my husband did a heroic job of adapting to circumstances and transforming it from a terrible day to an amazing one. For my birthday can I get a shout out to the significant others of Magic players everywhere?

Shout out to all the awesome significant others! Happy Belated Birthday!

Original Weatherlight Saga

New 19 Aug 2022 Asked by alexr35 19 Comments

Hi Mark, Long time reader (been reading your column and blog since the original Mirrodin block) and first time inquirer; first of all, a huge thanks for your contribution to my favourite game of all time. It has gotten me through school, university, a PhD and currently my tenure in university! I was wondering (as we are finally back to Dominaria and our heroic ship has just been Compleated), whether you have been allowed to share the Original Weatherlight story and what was the plan for the next two blocks of that story (including the original pitch for Mercadia). Thank you for your time and all your efforts for the game and the community.

I did a podcast on the original story, and there’s an upcoming column that touches on aspects of it.

Heroic Cards in Double Masters

New 19 Jun 2022 Asked by secretdreamprincess 35 Comments

Extremely tiny pet peeve; Why do only some of the Heroic cards in Double Masters 2022 have Heroic and the others don't? I get not wanting to put it on cards in a set that doesn't have heroic, but it is explicitly a deck archetype in this set. Hero of the Games is even a Theros setting card!

My gut is they didn’t want to add it to cards that didn’t originally have it.

Probability of Colorshifted Intervention

Could we see a colorshifted Heroic Intervention for white?

Possibly.

Blue-black Heroic Character

New 02 Nov 2021 Asked by barreldogzilla 77 Comments

Hey Mark! I was listening to your podcast about blue-black philosophy. Can you give me an example of a heroic blue-black character? Or just anyone who is not straight up a villain or a real jerk...

Printing Heroic Horizons in Paper

New 31 Oct 2021 Asked by quantext 39 Comments

Do any of the cards from Jumpstart: Heroic Horizons have a chance to be printed in paper if they don't have any effects that would require a computer?

Sure. There might be some debate on what “requires a computer”.
