Anti-Gravehate Card Problems

New 05 May 2024 Asked by storyofawerewolf 23 Comments

Hey Mark, random graveyard related question for you. So I understand once upon a time, decks like Dredge were pretty powerful. But nowadays, grave hate is ripe across all formats, its cheap, even free such as torments crypt and it really blocks grave based shenanigans massively. So me question to you is, why is there no anti gravehate cards? Like for example a zombie that reads "cards in graveyards can't be exile" or somet like that. It seems an obvious choice of ability so aye, please inform?

Permanent ongoing answers to answers tend to cause problems more than solve them.

Revamping Dredge

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by tstroh777 28 Comments

With revamped versions of older mechanics coming out, what are the chances that we get a reworked version of dredge?

We’ve moved away from mechanics that have what we call “repetition of play” where the correct way to use them creates games that play out too similarly. So, the chances are low.

Dredge Mechanic Fix

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 21 Comments

Which would you do to fix dredge? Make it so it only happens for your first draw each turn, or make you have to pay some mana to do it?

Not every mechanic needs to be (or can be) fixed. That said, in the hypothetical, I’d exile the cards rather than mill them.

Treasure Dredger Mechanic

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by j-waffles 16 Comments

Treasure dredger seems like it’s effectively a mana storage effect, which to my understanding was something only green and sometimes red were allowed to do. Am I misunderstanding something?

We allow black access to treasure if they’re an additional cost, such as life.

Fixing Dredge Mechanic

New 17 Mar 2024 Asked by hyralc 30 Comments

Just watched the Ravnica panel finally, and it got me thinking. The milling part of Dredge was meant to be a downside, but clearly wasn't. Could a fixed dredge exist and be fruitful, say if you exile from the top of your deck instead?

It would help. Enough? I’m not sure.

Commander Product Discussion

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by aztecmagic 25 Comments

Has there ever been discussion about a commander only product? I feel like there is a lot of design space that would be interesting and balanced in commander but would be bad for legacy. EG: White Plume Adventurer. I feel like something like dredge or storm has so much untapped design space if limited to edh and not legacy legal.

Commander is defined as legacy legal. If we make something not legal in legacy, it’s not legal in Commander. Note, Wizards isn’t in charge of Commander legality.

Mechanic Remastering

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by mjawadb 31 Comments

with more and more remastering mechanics like devotion, discover and disguise, will it be possible for us to get things like storm or dredge remade in a new nerf'd down form in the future?

A redone storm has more potential than a redone dredge. Both have issues though.

Silver Border Milling

New 14 Jan 2024 Asked by monarchofithaca 17 Comments

silver border rules question: if i have split screen in play and am milled by some effect, lets say i dredge life from the loam for example, do i pick which deck i get milled from for each card or do i pick one deck and mill the 3 cards from that deck?

You pick one library per effect.

Booster Fun Reminder Text

New 17 Dec 2023 Asked by mois113 73 Comments

I would assume that cube owners are part of the target audience for booster fun stuff. They often are very enfranchised players that like fancy cards and retro frames. Yet those are mostly printed without reminder text. In a 30+ years old game it's super rough to have obscure, never repeated keywords not explained on cards for a draft format. By now, there are dozens of cool cards I wanted to collect for my cubes but couldn't because I don't expect everyone to know how dredge or extort work.

When we poll enfranchised players, more say they want Booster Fun versions to not have reminder text. Let’s see what you all think.

Should Booster Fun versions of cards have reminder text? YesNoSee Results

A card dredge and delve

Take two dangerous mechanics that are synergistic and put them together. What could go wrong? : )

Guilds Batching Complexity

New 21 Nov 2023 Asked by gevth 25 Comments

Based on the watermark discussion, a set that batches all characteristics of each guild?“All Golgari creatures get +1/+1 (Golgari creatures are Green and Black creatures, creatures with Dredge, Green creatures with a B in their rules text…”Ok, I realized that it’s a bit more complicated than I thought for Ravnica’s Guilds or New Capenna’s Families. But theoretically, you could create factions and use both technologies (batches and watermarks) to help determine when a card belongs to a batch, right? For example, putting a “Historic” watermark in all artifacts, legendary cards and Sagas in Dominaria.

We do use watermarks to help reinforce factions, but as we’ve been talking about today, it carries no mechanical weight (well outside Un-sets).

Dredge Mechanic Rating

New 21 Nov 2023 Asked by bleunote9 32 Comments

What is "Dredge" on the storm scale?

I’ll call it a 9, and I’m probably being generous.

Storm Scale Mechanics

New 25 Jun 2023 Asked by thunderweb 52 Comments

Some mechanics rated 10 on Storm Scale (such as Dredge, Storm, and Tribal card type) got new cards in Modern Horizons sets.Should I expect other ones (such as Ante, Banding, and Graveyard-order-matters) getting new cards as well? Or are there mechanics not welcomed even in such sets?

The Storm Scale is about mechanics returning in premier sets. Abandoned mechanics, as opposed to ones that are a play design challenge, are far less likely to show up in any product.

Storm Scale Mechanics

New 28 Apr 2023 Asked by jirachibi2550 33 Comments

How does the storm scale work with stuff that cares about the mechanics but doesn't have them? For example, Dredge is high on the storm scale so won't get new cards, but what about a card like "If you have a card with Dredge in your Graveyard, gain 3 life" or something, but doesn't have dredge?

We don’t tend to refer to mechanics not in the set. So, if Dredge is a 9, a card referencing dredge is at least a 9.

Storm Scale Clarification

New 05 Jan 2023 Asked by giftsstorm 39 Comments

Given that storm has been reprinted multiple times (MH2 with Relay/Aeve and co, Commander products with Flusterstorm, etc.) is it more appropriate to call the Storm scale the Dredge scale, since that’s a mechanic that hasn’t ever really come back?

The Storm Scale measures mechanics returning in premier sets, which Storm has never done since the creation of the scale.

Card Mechanics Impact

New 03 Jan 2023 Asked by themastah 90 Comments

Durian is one of the most popular fruits in much of Asia; while many like the taste, it is banned on transport because it stinks to be around. Magic is a game of interaction. Wizards specifically dislikes "solitaire" combo in most formats, and some other powerful card strategies that people dislike playing against: dredge, LD, storm. But these mechanics have fans, esp. when casual! While we may disagree on whether UB is good or bad, can we please be honest that opponents' cards affect everyone?

I’ve never said they don’t affect everyone. I’ve said interacting with what your opponent brings to the game is a core part of the TCG experience. It’s not something you have any control over though, other than choosing the kind of people you play with or sometimes the format you choose. “Remove thing X from the game, so I don’t have to play against it” is not a request we can honor unless what it brings to the game reaches a very high threshold of discomfort. Something Universes Beyond comes nowhere close to reaching.

Dominaria Nostalgia Request

New 02 Jan 2023 Asked by aringa90 24 Comments

Hello Mark,Dominaria remastered made me go through memory lane, to the time I started playing magic as a teen (really looking forward to it!).Thinking back of Invasion, I remember a character referenced on multiple cards but that never received a card herself: The Urborg Witch (card references: Addle, exotic curse, dredge, undermine, smoldering tar). Can I request a card for her? :)Thank you

You may.

View on Manaless Dredge

New 05 Jun 2022 Asked by djscrub 31 Comments

What is your opinion of the Manaless Dredge strategy that sees play in Legacy and Vintage? Do you think it's cool that the complexity of Magic allows this exotic corner case? Or do you think of it as a failure that cards can come together this way?

It’s cool if it’s a rare thing and problematic if it’s a frequent thing.
