Cut Modern Horizons Designs

New 05 Sep 2022 Asked by vereendood 58 Comments

Hello Mark, I'd like to add to the pile of requests a cycle of cards that combine two abilities of a given ravnicas guild. Eg: graft + adapt, afterlife + haunt, bloodlust + riot...Most likely on a supplemental set, given the ensuing complexity.Thank you !

I designed these for original Modern Horizons, but they got cut.

Katilda's Afterlife Transformation

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by jjustin1379 36 Comments

Why did katilda lose her green when she turned into her spirit? Just a part of becoming a ghost?

Dying changed her. : )Mechanically, we wanted to keep Spirits in Crimson Vow to white and blue.

Guilds and Shared Themes

New 17 Apr 2021 Asked by gridnack 40 Comments

In podcasts about Ravnica, you discussed how the guilds need to share some themes for the overall set to work (for example, Orzhov Afterlife helped with a Selesnya “go wide” tokens and triggered Rakdos Spectacle). On a larger scale, sets need some shared mechanical glue (like how MDFC connected several sets, etc).Could a return to Ravnica share keywords across all factions (similar to Strixhaven)? (I.e., not have a dedicated keyword per guild, but rather a couple good overlapping mechanics that might work across several guilds each)?

It’s possible to structure it that way, but now that Strixhaven has taken that path, we might want to keep the two distinct.

'Over My Dead Bodies' In Black Border?

New 14 Feb 2021 Asked by thricelocked 45 Comments

Could the "creatures in your graveyard can attack, and die into exile" thing from Unstable's "Over My Dead Bodies" be done in black border? It's a really cool effect that I could see in planes like Theros that have an afterlife.

Usually if we do it in an Un-set, it means it doesn’t work in black border. That’s why it was in an Un-set.

Slivers with New Mechanics

New 07 Feb 2021 Asked by ryuujin759 43 Comments

Regarding Slivers point 1: how about slivers granting newer mechanics like Foretell, mutate (with a balanced effect), afterlife N, riot, etc.?

Slivers can only grant mechanics that are also in the set they’re in. It’s why we put the in Modern Horizons because we had access to more mechanics.

Orzhov Mechanic Selection

New 17 Oct 2020 Asked by the-darklorous 30 Comments

Why did the design team decide to use Afterlife for the Orzhov mechanic in Ravnica Allegiance instead of Debt? And on a similar note, will we ever get to see any of the Debt cards that were being tested while Allegiance was being designed?

Debt just didn’t blend well with the other guilds’ mechanics.

Returning RNA's Mechanics

There is.

Improving Cards with Crowded Text

New 27 Sep 2020 Asked by chazashley175 42 Comments

Hey Mark, not really a complaint, just curious, any plans to make cards with multiple abilities and crowded text easier to see? Example, my cube players always forget that tithe taker has afterlife 1 because the text meshes together at initial glance. Thoughts??

We’ve talked about bolding more relevant text.

Future of Set Blocks

New 30 Aug 2020 Asked by rumblez99 43 Comments

With 2 and 3 set blocks gone, does that mean we won't be able to see cards like Gate to the Afterlife or Eye of Ugin again?

We just had Ravnica over three sets. Two and three sets in a row on the same world are not off the table.

Return of Storm Scale Articles

New 01 May 2020 Asked by thelyca 36 Comments

What ever happened to the Storm Scale articles on the wizards website? Will they ever return? (The last one was about Kaladesh and Amonkhet) They were very intriguing and insightful. Can we get storm scalings at least for Ixalan and beyond? Namely Explore, Enrage, Ascend, Mentor, Surveil, Jump-start, Undergrowth, Adapt, Addendum, Afterlife, Riot, Spectacle, Amass, Escape, Keyword Counters, Mutate, and Companion.

I’ll do other Storm Scale articles.

Deciduous Mechanics Criteria

New 12 Feb 2020 Asked by cleverconvict 21 Comments

What is the current thinking on moving set specific mechanics to deciduous? I'm asking because Afterlife is so clean and easy to understand that it would make a great mechanic to see outside of Ravnica.

Deciduous mechanics are usually something very flexible that can be adapted to fit different worlds. Afterlife is a fine mechanic, but doesn’t really meet the needs of something deciduous.

Addressing Trample Complexity

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by zanmor 42 Comments

Just to really beat this horse well into the afterlife: A black border spell couldn't use wording like "Excess damage" or "Damage beyond lethal" or something like that to accomplish the "trample" effect? Lethal damage is already defined in the rules. Could you use that term on a card?

It is possible one day black border solves this problem, but it is thorny and complex.

He did not die on Theros, so no.

Mechanical Naming Rules

New 08 Jul 2019 Asked by lazcarno 41 Comments

"The early rules allowed looking at card names mechanically, but that went out the window when we started printing in other languages." This is something I've been wondering for a while: Why can't cards say "if you control a permanent named [name]" for cards like Desert or the Urzatron lands, thus requiring subtypes; but cards can still say "search your library for a card named [name]," for example on Gate to the Afterlife, or the Herald cycle from Alara?

Cards can refer to a name when it’s one specific card. It can’t care about a name as part of a larger list. You can affect Lightning Bolt, but not cards with “lightning” in the name.

Spoiler Card Perspective

New 07 Jul 2019 Asked by callan-ish 21 Comments

Hi Mark, the Desert debate made me wonder what R&D's position on "spoiler" cards like Gate to the Afterlife was, from my perspective they feel very similar to a non-functional subtype, (especially for new/young players who expect interacting cards to be in the same set) but I was curious if R&D had a different thought process.

The question is where to draw the line. Spoiler cards are designed to get the community talking and tease the next set. We don’t do it often and usually do it at a higher rarity, so newer players are less likely to run across it.

Teysa and Afterlife

New 11 Apr 2019 Asked by retrofox101-blog 45 Comments

What came first: the idea to put death harmonicon (Teysa Karlov) as the Orzhova legend, or the idea that the Orzhova set mechanic would be afterlife?

Afterlife.

War of the Spark Mechanics

New 16 Mar 2019 Asked by gridnack 51 Comments

War of the Spark is drafted by itself and doesn’t focus on the guilds. Does this mean we won’t see any more of the new Ravnica keywords like Jump-start or Afterlife (only 7 cards)?

War of the Spark doesn’t use the guild keywords from Guilds of Ravnica or Ravnica Allegiance. It’s it’s own set with its own mechanics.
