Excitement for Bloomburrow

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by kwain-itinerant-meddler 1 Comments

Wazzzaaaaap, Mark da Shark,Just wanted to send kudos and share my excitement about so much of Bloomburrow! It's gonna be my first prerelease in a long while, since M20, I think, as well as there's so many things to love about it. I've been a big fan of Doug Beyer since Kaladesh, glad he was the lead designer on this set. Also super pumped to be getting both a revisit to the Heroic mechanic in Valiant, one of my favorite mechanics from Theros, and the amount of rabbit typal support. My Cadira commander deck is gonna go through a major redesign when the set is properly out. Hope you have a lovely day!

I’m glad you’re so excited. I can’t wait to hear all the prerelease stories.

Returning to Kaladesh Prospects

What is the likelihood that we see a revisit to Kaladesh?

We return to a lot of worlds. There’s a chance.

Surprises in Plane Reactions

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by jacw212 1 Comments

As someone who has New Capenna in their top 3 favorite planes, I was really surprised that it wasn't beloved. Were you ever surprised by a lukewarm reaction to a plane you liked, or a very warm welcome to a plane you were unsure about?

I expected Kaladesh to be a bit more beloved.

Dissonance from Modern Things

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by respectablegeek 3 Comments

I wonder if my issue over Duskmourne is from a slightly different angle to most? I don’t mind Magic expanding what fits in universe. But I’m finding massive dissonance from the modern things only existing as the Horror setting. Most multiverse inhabitants won’t know what a TV is, so it is odd having twisted TVs without other grounding context! Horror is often found in twisting the commonplace, so here it only works from an external perspective.

Kaladesh, Kamigawa, and New Capenna all have modern things and aren’t horror settings.

Executing Problematic Mechanics

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 5 Comments

Modern horizons 3 is interesting to me in that three of the major mechanics in the set were once considered failed or problematic mechanics. Kindred was considered a failure almost immediately after lorwyn and was abandoned. It was meant to be a card type and you now have a defunct card type. You used kindred not only in the tarmogoyf deck but also in a different way as an identifier in the eldrazi deck. Energy was awesome flavor wise and was a success but you failed to balance it mechanically and you had to ban several cards and because of that it seems you hesitated to return to this mechanic in standard. Finally devoid was considered a do nothing mechanic that was not popular. You used all three of these mechanics in modern horizons 3 but they are a big success. What has changed? Is it the execution? Is it experience? Why use these mechanics for such a high profile set knowing their history? Does this give hope for other mechanics that were not popular to return

First, energy was quite popular, the highest scoring mechanic in Kaladesh. Yes, a bunch of cards ended up being too strong, but that means a lot of people played with it.Second, Kindred (formerly tribal) wasn’t unpopular. Our issue with it was it led to a slippery slope where we added a lot of words on cards for little effect. Players have asked for its return.Third, devoid was unpopular, but I think we just positioned it wrong. We made it a mechanic that didn’t do anything which upset people. Had we made it a supertype, I don’t think anyone would have blinked at it.So what happened in Modern Horizons III?We brought back energy, a popular mechanic that players have been begging us to bring back for years. We brought back Kindred (renamed), but that’s not a big element of the set. Again, it’s something players have been asking for.We brought back devoid because we were doing Eldrazi, which was much more popular than devoid. I don’t think devoid is why the Eldrazi theme is popular. The Eldrazi are why the Eldrazi theme is popular. Devoid is just a callback, one we need to make the theme work mechanically.

Changing Creature Types

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by phi8 6 Comments

Hi Mark! About creature types. You’ve said before R&D is skittish about errataing creature types, but there’s been a lot of doing that anyway lately. Apart from changing the types of animal-people like viashino and cephalid to better synergize with their non-anthropomorphic counterparts, sloth was added to a few cards with Fallout, and now dragons from Kaladesh received the cat type. Efreet was phased out in favor of djinn, but not retroactively like naga - all the efreet cards are still efreet, but there won’t be new ones anymore. And lastly, despite both types entering the game around the same time, sloth gets added, detective doesn’t. Arboreal Grazer went from beast to sloth beast, but Dogged Detective stays merely a human rogue.  I’m fully in favor of the general direction that’s taken with creature types, and I also understand the risk of doing a lot of this in a game with paper cards. But the way it’s currently being handled feels extremely inconsistent, and the categorizer in me feels upset!
So, my question is: could you, or someone who is in charge of this, elaborate on the seemingly complex reasonings as to which creature type gets added, added but not errata’d, replaced, or phased out (perhaps in an article)? You’ve said before it’s not, but it really does seem scattershot, and I want to understand.Thank you!

Here’s the problem. It’s mostly done piecemeal which creates the inconsistency you’re talking about. Let me bring it up with the relevant people.

Aetherborn Outside Kaladesh

How could the aetherborn exist on a place besides Kaladesh?

Aether is not unique to Kaladesh.

Kaladesh Dragons' Creature Types

New 29 May 2024 Asked by fluffycattens 156 Comments

Thriving Skyclaw, a Kaladesh dragon from MH3, is a Cat Dragon. This makes sense since Kaladesh dragons have a winged tiger-like appearance! Are we going to see creature type errata for the other Kaladesh dragons (Skyship Stalker and Freejam Regent?) They appear to be the same species from the art, yet lack the Cat type, and it would be sad if the Skyclaw's siblings got left out!

I know of no current plans for errata. Sorry.

MH3 Energy Cards

New 23 May 2024 Asked by sladeweston 5 Comments

Good afternoon Mark, my question is regarding the new MH3 Energy cards. I noticed that the energy cards of MH3 seem to have divested themselves of the flavor from previous sets. Was this an intentional change to allow for more flexibility and design space? If so, does this increase the likelihood that we'll see energy return in a non-kaladesh set?

The energy cards aren’t all tied to Kaladesh. Energy, as a concept, is much broader than that.

Considering Two Set Blocks

New 23 May 2024 Asked by roborabbitart 0 Comments

So I understand that three set blocks tend to wear people out, but has there been any consideration for two set blocks? I've been feeling more and more over the years that a lot of recent mechanics just don't get enough support because they're often one-and-done, and it'll be a miracle to ever see them again. It also feels like recent settings don't get fleshed out and don't get time to breathe, save Eldraine which got revisited surprisingly quickly.

Battle for Zendikar, Shadows over Innistrad, Kaladesh, Amonkhet, and Ixalan were all two set blocks.

Energy Mechanic Flavor

New 23 May 2024 Asked by n0b1gde4l 2 Comments

I notice that MH3 has Energy cards that don't match the technological fluff used for the mechanic in Kaladesh (and the Fallout set). How much does broadening the flavor like this help the mechanic on the Storm Scale?

The more exposure and advancement of the design of a mechanic, the better for its future.

Plane Naming Preferences

New 20 May 2024 Asked by jantin 88 Comments

Hello Mark! My favourite Magic planes are Kaladesh, Kamigawa and Kaldheim and I see a pattern here. Can I get a "maybe" on a new Magic plane, whose name would start with "Ka-"?

A number of years back, I went to the creative team and said, “Stop naming planes that start with K,” and gave them a list of letters that no major plane starts with.

Artifact Set Colors

If/when on an artifact themed set like Kaladesh or Mirrodin, except that all/most of the artifacts have colored mana costs to avoid the balancing issues?

When.

Energy in Jeskai

New 13 May 2024 Asked by weebos 26 Comments

Is there a reason why MH3 seems to focus Energy in Jeskai when it was more Temur in Kaladesh? It's cool, but I was hoping to see more Green Energy cards.

I recorded a podcast with Erik Lauer on the vision design of Modern Horizons III and we touch upon that exact issue.

Purpose of Multiverse and Inter-planar Travel

New 02 May 2024 Asked by wulframofthedas 62 Comments

What's the point of a multiverse now its so easy to move between planes? Aren't Ravnica/Kaladesh/New Capenna and the rest of the the planes mixed around Thunder Junction just like a new version of Dominaria now?

Omenpaths are unstable (they can come and go) and not super frequent, so it’s not an easy task for a character to go from plane A to plane B if they aren’t a planeswalker.

Planning Sets with Multiple Ideas

New 24 Apr 2024 Asked by sarsaparillaart 41 Comments

How often does Magic design sets with multiple shortlist ideas in mind? (ie. Kaladesh being both Indian and Aetherpunk)

It happens a lot. The Indian influence for Kaladesh came later than the Aetherpunk influence, by the way.

Arcades and Kaledesh Trivia

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 36 Comments

Maybe it got lost in the sea of questions, but could I get the coveted Birthday Trivia? About Arcades or about Kaledesh, as Arcades was my first commander, and Kaledesh was my first set!

Kaladesh, the plane, was originally created for Magic Origins because we needed to show Chandra’s home plane. We liked it so much we decided to make it a set and spent extra resources building it, so we’d be able to build on it a couple years later.Happy Belated Birthday!

Unused Design Reuse

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 37 Comments

Do you have designs that didn't quite fit in a set (ie Debt Counters) that you try to plug into future sets if you think they'd work well? And if so, is there a recent example?

It happens all the time. Energy in Kaladesh was designed for original Mirrodin, for instance.

Kaladesh Birthday Trivia

Favorite Kaladesh Aspects

Per the rite of birthday trivia: what was your favorite element of my favorite plane Kaladesh?

I lived the inventor’s feel we incorporated into the artifact designs. Happy Birthday!
