Noncreature Subtype Return

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by bartholious 7 Comments

Was the "A noncreature subtype makes its first return" referring to the class cards? If so did you forget Baldur's Gate printed a new class?

I meant class. I did forget about the one Baldur’s Gate card.

Classes Subtype Return

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by haru-n-harkel 29 Comments

Mark, is the returning noncreature subtype Classes? Because if so, they *did* technically return once, we got Artificer Class in Baldur's Gate as a one-off.

It was. I forgot that one card.

Appraisal of Gate to Phyrexia

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by j-waffles 42 Comments

Re: gate to phyrexia is a breakApparently the person I was having an argument with has a new claim. He says that even if you say that it’s break, the reason is because it’s too good of a card, and black is supposed to have bad artifact removal. I tried to explain that they are thinking of enchantments, I even pointed out cards like feed the swarm and shatter the oath, and that black isn’t supposed to remove artifacts at all. Can you please clarify this point, the argument has turned into a bet and I really want those 5 dollars

Black is not suppose to be able to destroy/exile artifacts. It’s a weakness of the color, so doing it is specifically a break.Gate to Phyrexia was made before we were monitoring the color pie. Early sets made a number of breaks because they weren’t caring about it.

Gate to Phyrexia Designation

Gate to phyrexia is a break right? I’m not asking for a reprint or anything, I just trying to win an argument

Yes, it’s a break. You win!

Basic Land Acorn Card

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by raytyger 3 Comments

Could we get an acorn Basic Desert or Basic Cave or Basic Gate?

I’m skeptical we’ll make those, even in acorn/silver-border.

Activated Abilities Zones

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 33 Comments

I think it's wierd that 90% of activated abilities can only be used on the battlefield, but very rarely they can be activated from the graveyard or the hand, and there's no way to identify these exceptions except to read the card and logically determine that the ability would only work from the hand/graveyard.Not sure what a solution would be, or even if it really needs a solution, but it is wierd, right?By the way, it was the "Talon Gates of Madara" which prompted this ask.

The default is the battlefield. If it’s any other zone, we spell it out.

Special Draft Experience Feedback

New 29 May 2024 Asked by lebreadbox-blog 53 Comments

I played the 50th anniversary DnD battle for baldur's Gate special draft with the new dungeon. HOLY COW. Was this ever a fun draft. I LOVED the collector booster in your draft pool. I loved the new dungeon. And the set remains as fun as ever to draft and play. High fives, yes. But please, can we have more special drafts like this?

I can pass along how much you enjoyed it.

Energy Mechanic Revisited

New 23 May 2024 Asked by gottok 7 Comments

I was under the impression that the Energy mechanic was widely considered to be problematic, given how it creates a fundamentally un-interactable resource. I am curious why Energy was chosen as a MH3 mechanic to "gate" reserved list cards, when it only contributes to the non-interactivity of powerful cards? If/when ways to interact with your opponent's Energy supply?

The problem with energy was simply we didn’t quite get the energy economy correct, making many of the cards overpowered. That is a fixable thing.

Lord of the Rings Battles

New 18 May 2024 Asked by realkamina76 51 Comments

Out of curiosity, why didn't the Battle of Helm's Deep/the Hornburg and the Battle of Pelennor Fields get, well, Battles printed in any of the Lord of the Rings products? The Black Gate got a random Gate, so it just seems like a missed opportunity.

The Lord of the Rings was actually designed before March of the Machine as Universes Beyond products have numerous review cycles with the licensor and thus have a longer design schedule. So why didn’t it have Battles? Battles didn’t exist yet.

Story of Trapped Estate

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by stormcrow13 132 Comments

Can you tell us the story of how you got trapped inside Fred Astaire's estate?

At the time, I was what’s called a “runner” (technically a production assistant). Part of my job is delivering things. I was working on a show called “45 Years of Television” (it’s the show where I met Jim Henson), a clip show showcasing TV over the years. One of the clips had Fred Astaire in it, so I had to deliver some materials to Fred Astaire’s wife (as Fred Astaire was dead). It turns out I had a long day of delivering things and this was my final delivery. The sun had already set. When I drive up the house is dark. His estate had a gate on it. I buzz to get in. It’s his wife, and it’s clear I woke her up. The gate closed behind me as I drove in. I drop of the envelope and apologize for waking her up.Then, when I’m leaving, I drive up to the gate, expecting it to open. It doesn’t. There was a button I had to hit to open it. I look back to the house and see it’s dark again. His wife has gone back to sleep.I figure, I can find the button. I had a flashlight in my car. I know if I wake the wife up a second time she might complain to my boss and I’ll get in trouble. The estate is old and vines have grown over all the walls, so it’s clear the button is here, but behind vines. I don’t remember exactly how long it took me to find the button, but it was at least an hour, and most likely longer than that. Eventually, I did find it and got out. That is how I got trapped inside Fred Astaire’s estate.

Cameos in Future Sets

New 18 Apr 2024 Asked by cle-guy 32 Comments

Are we more likely to see things like Snow and Gates appear if they fit the card even if they’re not part of the set?

We’re going more cameos, but the bar is still high.

Prerelease Blessings

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by krobat 32 Comments

Mark, please give us your prerelease blessings (and slip a Bonny Pall into my packs)! I'm so excited! This is my first prerelease since Lord of the Rings and before that Baldur's Gate!

I give you my prerelease blessing. I hope you have a great time and pull Bonny Pall.

Dungeon Mechanic Return

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by strymon 29 Comments

Do you foresee Entering the Dungeon ever making a return in a premier set? I like the idea of Enter the Dungeon, but I feel like it was held back by the complexity of AFR. Checking out The Undercity and Baldur’s Gate Wilderness, the mechanic seems much more exciting. It makes me want to see what an ordinary Limited format with it where it shines.

If we do another D&D set, it would definitely be on the table.

We had a Gate 8 (aka a slideshow) for it today, so late set design.

Comparing Card Types

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by tybonel13 30 Comments

Would saying that Baldur's Gate Wilderness is the same sort of "card" as Garruk the Slayer and the ones made for Theros block's Hero's Path be an accurate statement?

Yes.

Baldur's Gate Dungeon Event

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by thasgar 33 Comments

Is the Baldur's Gate Wilderness dungeon only for the event coming in May, or is it entering the comprehensive rules and Commander/Legacy/Vintage? I'm hearing people online say it will be, but not seeing anything official about it.

It’s just for the event, but if people enjoy it and want to casually use it, there’s nothing we can do to stop it. : )

Baldur's Gate Timing

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by alexikitty 30 Comments

it seems like the the magic community as a whole is coming back around on battle for baldur's gate. what went into the decision to release it so far before the full game?

The initial plan was for them to come out at the same time.

Land Type Precedent

New 04 Dec 2023 Asked by holychurchofgeronimostilton 33 Comments

Also, how does R&D feel about giving lands that flavorfully represent a cave the Cave subtype in the future, even without a theme based around it in the set? (same goes for, like, Desert and Gate)

We don’t like the precedent. Let’s say the Cave subtype becomes a play design issue, and we can’t have any more. We don’t want to have to ban cave as a flavor for a land.

Non-artifact Gnomes

New 04 Nov 2023 Asked by coboney 41 Comments

Mark, regarding non-artifact gnomes, we had some of them in Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, and Battle for Baldur's Gate, so there are 10 in Magic in addition to Quarum Trench Gnomes

True. I was talking in-Magic universe.
