Designing 'Unexileable' Cards

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by fishwizard96 7 Comments

Hi Mark! Long time reader, first time asker. Would an 'unexileable' card be more likely to read 'whenever this CARDTYPE is put into exile, return it to the battlefield tapped'?

I think we could essentially do “can’t be exiled”, but my gut us we’d probably want to keyword it as reminder text can use much friendlier language as it doesn’t have to be so technical. I don’t think we’d want to make it more complicated.

Issues with Unexilable Template

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by aalgot 11 Comments

There’s no clean way to template [unexilable], and it doesn’t happen enough that we need a whole keyword. Why can’t you just write “can’t be exiled”

We can, but I believe there are effects you would expect it to stop that it doesn’t.

Feasibility of Unexileable Status

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by magnadrake 1 Comments

Does the rules support "Unexileable"? As in, A permanent just cannot be exiled, but still can be destroyed, targeted, bounced back to hand, etc.

There’s no clean way to template it, and it doesn’t happen enough that we need a whole keyword.

New Ability Development

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by gorramnerd 12 Comments

When I first saw Apex Devastator, I remember seeing the card say Cascade, Cascade, Cascade, Cascade, thinking that had a very clean yet Mythic feeling. When developing a new ability or using an ability in a new way, how do you determine when it's correct to write out the keyword four times versus saying "Cascade four times". In a similar way, how do you decide, for instance, in the case of Gitaxian Spellstalker, whether it should be prowess, prowess, as opposed something like Prowess 2?

Templating has an emotional impact component. While clarity is usually the driving factor, excitement is also important.

Future of Fateseal Mechanic

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by dlight98 9 Comments

I know it's unlikely, but will the Fateseal keyword ever come back? I thought it was an interesting mechanic, even if it's limited to one sliver card for now.

We tried it in a set years ago. It is a pretty unfun mechanic.

Bestow Mechanic Rules

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by imogenbits 0 Comments

Currently every Bestow creature just grants its power/toughness as a bonus and all of its other abilities to the creature it enchants. Why did you not bake that into the keyword itself so that the cards don't have to list everything twice? If it was to keep open flexibility, is there a particular reason that space hasn't been explored since then?

Usually things like this are due to rules issues. I don’t know the specifics on this mechanic.

Keywording Bloomburrow mechanic

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by hexooze 6 Comments

Has R&D ever considered keywording the Bloomburrow "Season of" cycle type of modal mechanic like Spree? If not, is there an official name or r&d slang for these spells?

We don’t really have a name for that style of mechanic and didn’t try to keyword it to the best of my knowledge.

Isolation of 'Level up' Keyword

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by oooblyjooblies 3 Comments

Is it possible to use the 'Level up' keyword in isolation, without the Leveler card frame and its associated baggage? I.e. A creature with Level up that, in its rules text, attains bonuses referring to the number of Level counters it has.

I’ll say it would be unlikely.

Keyword Counter vs Non-Counter

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by haveasmileitsonme 2 Comments

Can the Rules distinguish between when a card has a keyword counter on it versus having the keyword not from a counter? E.g., Creatures you control with Flying Counters on them also have Vigilance.

Yes, I believe the rules can, much like it can care about a card having a +1/+1 counter.

Clarifying Modifier Rules

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by nootnooter34 7 Comments

Hello Mr Rosewater,
Un-rules question for you:Modular Monstrosity has the ability, "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you have five seconds to choose a keyword you haven't chosen for a card named Modular Monstrosity today that's been printed on a creature card."There is also a ruling that reads, "If the keyword has a modifier, such as a mana cost or a number, you must choose a modifier that’s been printed."
My question is, can you choose a keyword that has been printed on a creature with a modifier that's only been printed on a noncreature card. Cumulative Upkeep has appeared on many creatures so is a valid keyword. Can I name "Cumulative Upkeep-Add {R}" which has only been seen on the noncreature Braids of Fire?
Thank you in advance

You have to choose a mechanic and a modifier that’s appeared on a creature.

Keyword Difficulty For New Players

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by emrachemicalromance 14 Comments

Why people want new keywords so much? When I was a new player the thing I got more trouble understanding was which keywords did what. I printed a cheat sheet with the evergreen ones but it took me months to memorize them. A card with a full paragraph was usually easier to understand than keyword soup cards that had only one line with 3 keywords.

I think many enfranchised players don’t realize the true barrier of a lot of vocabulary words to newer players, as there was just a lot less evergreen vocabulary words when they entered the game.

Understanding the Gift Keyword

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by yoggh777 11 Comments

I would like to say that I find the gift keyword rather hard to read and understand. While I understand that it's supposed to sound more natural, effects like that are simply hard to read with how the game's grammar works for me. I don't really know what can be done to fix that. But I think more gamist language would be helpful in general

We have discovered that real technical language is most helpful to the deeply enfranchised, and a big barrier for those less enfranchised.

Affinity and Creature Scaling

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by gridnack 5 Comments

Re: Scales of ShaleYou mentioned creature type scaling is an issue. I was trying to say it already has Affinity, but it’s not called Affinity, and I enjoy seeing the actual keyword when it cares about non-artifacts.

We don’t always use keywords. As others have mentioned on this blog, the large number of mechanics already referenced by name makes the set feel more complex to some.

Formatting of 'Gift'

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by kingofyou115 1 Comments

Is there a reason Gift wasn't formatted like Ward to remain a generic keyword? It seems like the kind of keyword that could become evergreen if it wasn't specifically tied to hardcoded options like "Gift a tapped fish." For example:Gift - Draw a card (As you cast this spell, you may choose an opponent. If you do, they draw a card before the rest of this spell's effects.)

We can say Gift a _________ a do whatever gift we like. It’s not very restricting.

Keyword Nuance Explanation

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by hi-viz-wizard 2 Comments

Question in regards to your comments on gift a tapped fish; why not stop the keyword at gift, to offer further versatility if you wanted to reuse the mechanic?

Much like protection has a general meaning and a specific meaning when attached to other words, so too does gift.

Praise for Simple Designs

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by patjamma 10 Comments

I am LOVING the simpler designs in Bloomburrow. My favorite card of all time is Vampire Nighthawk so seeing a bunch of creatures with 2-4 evergreen keywords and nothing else makes me happy

Glad to hear that.

Details of New Card Mechanic

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by thunderweb 13 Comments

The new card "Parting Gust" has "Gift a tapped Fish", which creates a tapped 1/1 blue Fish creature token. Is the "1/1 blue" part tied to the Gift mechanic, like how "0/0 black" is tied to Amass?

“Gift a tapped Fish” is a keyword, so we can offset someone of the information into the reminder text. All future “gift a tapped Fish” have to create a 1/1 blue Fish creature token

Concern about Complex Mechanics

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by dude1818 52 Comments

I don't like how weird Magic is getting with mechanics lately. Collect evidence, commit a crime, now gift, forage, and pawprints. What happened to just making new keywords and ability words? Has wotc run out of design space?

All of the mechanics you listed, save paw prints, *is* a new keyword or ability word.

Rules Text Highlighting

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by americanlantern 14 Comments

I have seen some previews today including the keyword offspring that are highlighted in the rules text. Is that how they will be printed or is this just for the preview? One of the cards was Warren Warleader, as an example.

It’s not highlighted on the actual cards. That’s just to put focus on it in the preview.

Considering 'Can't Block' Keyword

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by raytyger 3 Comments

"It's so short that I don't know if it needs the keywording."

It's not that shorter than "can't attack" (1 letter less"), and that's Defender. I'm pondering over keywording "can't block" mostly because of it's new frequency of use and it's possible synergies in a similar vein as defender.

Defender got a name because we were moving the ability off the Wall subtype. Also, we like making designs that lose defender, so it’s self referential some of the time. Can’t attack has neither of those two issues.
