Reprint Flavor Words Potential

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by cle-guy 50 Comments

Could a reprinted card get a description ability? Like if you reprint Borborygmos Enraged could his second ability where you discard a land to deal damage get the description of “throw rocks” or something like that?

In theory, flavor words can be added or removed, as they have no actual mechanical relevance.

Iconic Mechanics Variation

New 25 Oct 2023 Asked by gevth 39 Comments

Hey Mark! I saw a comment noting how Dinosaurs didn’t have Enrage in LCI, and made me remember an answer you gave about Werewolves being too tied to a mechanic to be printed without it…What’s been the reaction to other creature types being printed without their iconic mechanic? For example, Ninjas without Ninjutsu in NEO.

In the vision design handoff for Neon Dynasty, the Ninjas didn’t have Ninjutsu specifically because I thought there was a lot of other interesting trope space to explore mechanically. I’m not against Werewolves conveying their lycanthropy in a different mechanical means, but my assumption is all the Werewolves from that set would probably treat it similarly. It’s just a high bar.

Praise for Psychic Paper

Can you give high fives to the designer of 'Psychic Paper' from the WHO decks? My favorite thing while playing them was swinging with my time lord "Borborygmos Enraged"

Will do.

hello mark! i have a dilemma. i love enrage but im not a big fan of dinosaurs. would you be able to give me an if or when on enrage across another creature type?

I expect it to return, and odds are if it does, it won’t just be on Dinosaurs.

We've seen Borborygmos Enraged, but when will we see Borborygmos Engaged?

When he finds the right partner. : )

Unique Card Drawbacks Request

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by obazervazi 29 Comments

I ran out of text space. I meant cards like Forbidden Orchard in Massacre Girl, Nomad Stadium in Darien, or Sorrow's Path in Enrage decks. Drawbacks that are drawbacks in 99% of decks, but good on rare occasions because they are one of the few cards that do that thing some other card cares about. I'm asking for more weird, one of a kind drawbacks, including ones that are bafflingly awful until someone figures it out.

Players do like drawbacks you can turn into a positive with proper deck building, but usually a bit more of the time than 1%. What you’re asking for is mostly just cards with big downsides which are pretty unpopular. We make them on occasion, but not often.

Enrage Mechanic Exclusivity

New 13 Aug 2021 Asked by fuddlesthegatekeeper 42 Comments

i love the enrage mechanic but i dont really like dinos, is enrage sort of exclusive to them? like, could humans or at least something like elephants have enrage?

Non-Dinosaurs on other planes could have enrage.

Enrage Storm Scale Detail

New 21 May 2021 Asked by elderdragonmaster55 25 Comments

Follow up on enrage storm scaleWhy a 6? I know your right fit is dinosaur tribal sets but Couldn't it be used on creatures that aren't dinosaurs and wouldn't you want a keyword for when this creature is dealt damage.

It’s just a tight design space. It could be used on non-Dinosaurs.

Enrage Mechanic's Storm Scale

Where does Enrage sit on the storm scale? It was fun, and I'd love some new pieces for my Pauper enrage deck one day

I’d call it a 6.

Return of Storm Scale Articles

New 01 May 2020 Asked by thelyca 36 Comments

What ever happened to the Storm Scale articles on the wizards website? Will they ever return? (The last one was about Kaladesh and Amonkhet) They were very intriguing and insightful. Can we get storm scalings at least for Ixalan and beyond? Namely Explore, Enrage, Ascend, Mentor, Surveil, Jump-start, Undergrowth, Adapt, Addendum, Afterlife, Riot, Spectacle, Amass, Escape, Keyword Counters, Mutate, and Companion.

I’ll do other Storm Scale articles.

Enrage Mechanic Restrictions

New 23 Mar 2020 Asked by hebiweiss 37 Comments

Is Enrage limited to dinosaurs or any Red/Green/White creature can have it on the right set?

The Enrage/Dinosaur connection was an Ixalan thing. Enrage could come back not tied to Dinosaurs and not even in the same color combination.

Enrage Design Space

How much design space is there in Enrage?

Not tons.

Enrage Mechanic Origin

New 01 May 2019 Asked by phyrexianoracle 52 Comments

The set that you had “enrage” in that Ixalan took from your set, has it come out yet? If not was it in Modern Horizons or the Fall set? Something further out?

It was the original Gruul guild mechanic for Ravnica Allegiance.

Ixalan Fungusaur Concept

New 02 Mar 2019 Asked by albus7 40 Comments

If Fungusaur was printed in Ixalan, would it have has enrage?

Yes. It wouldn’t have been called Fungusaur but something similar like Rampaging Fungusaur.

Fungusaur Reprint Consideration

New 01 Mar 2019 Asked by meophist 41 Comments

Was Fungusaur considered for a reprint in Ixalan? As a Dinosaur with an Enrage mechanic, it feels like a perfect fit.

Fungusaur was the inspiration for Enrage. We did talk about a reprint.

Understanding New Mechanics

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 63 Comments

"Dominaria had two new mechanics (historic and sagas). Ixalan had two new mechanics (explore and enrage)." Technically four of the guilds either don't have new mechanics or (in the case of Izzet) have a minor variant. "Undergrowth" has been used on and off since Ice Age (Lhurgoyf), and with a range of effects - it's only the name that's new. Surveil too has been used in exactly that form before, most recently in Ixalan.

If you discount things we’ve individually done on cards before then many sets have zero new mechanics.

Riffs on Older Mechanics

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by dude1818 60 Comments

"Both Dimir and Izzet are getting riffs of older mechanics." How come *three* of the guilds aren't getting new mechanics? I don't care how cool the individual cards are, it sucks that we're not getting new mechanics

Dominaria had two new mechanics (historic and sagas). Ixalan had two new mechanics (explore and enrage). We like to introduce new things, but most sets also make use of older mechanics because they can be mixed and matched to do new cool things.

Origin of Enrage Mechanic

New 29 Aug 2018 Asked by glovealike 71 Comments

Enrage mechanic was taken from Gruul, right?

Not taken. The Ixalan set design team created it on their own. The Ravnica Allegiance team independently had made it for Gruul. The earlier set gets it if they need it, so Enrage went to Dinosaurs instead of Gruul,
