Future Sight Mechanics Possibility

New 30 Apr 2022 Asked by jwcjds 28 Comments

Is there a chance we'll see more of the as yet unrevisited Future Sight mechanics again as 1-offs in future Modern Horizons sets? It was very cool seeing Wizardcycling again, and would love to see transfigure return aswell (perhaps as a Black-Green mechanic?)

Maybe. : )

Reason for Not Using Transfigure

New 13 Apr 2022 Asked by estebatto 32 Comments

Rocco, Cabaretti Cateter is yet another recent card (there were more in NEO) that tutors cards from your library directly into the battlefield. What stops the design team from using transfigure again? You've said that it leads to repetitive gameplay but here we are.

One-ofs and a whole mechanic are different things.

Future of Transfigure Mechanic

New 10 Feb 2022 Asked by estebatto 25 Comments

As there were tutor into the battlefield cards in New Kamigawa, does that mean transfigure could come back in the future?

We still do individual tutor cards, but we tend not to do tutor mechanics.

Future of Transfigure Mechanic

New 08 Nov 2021 Asked by estebatto 29 Comments

is transfigure something we won't see anymore?

It’s unlikely as we tend not to do tutoring mechanics (things that fetch specific cards out of your library) any more. Okay, technically, we’ll probably still do basic land fetching, but that’s not transfigure.

Legendary Creature for Library Interaction

New 02 May 2021 Asked by thejingleking 23 Comments

With regards to a legendary creature to support transfigure and transmute, could we get a legendary creature with a trigger for library searching? (Maybe with a unique Johnny effect so as not to just make tutors more powerful)

Something synergistic with library interaction is the way to go.

Legendary Creature with Specific Supports

Mark, can I ask for a legendary creature with support to transfigure and transmute?

I’m not sure we’re doing a lot more with those mechanics.

Favorite Mechanics or Cards

New 23 May 2020 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 136 Comments

I feel like a lot of people who say you’ve only done bad for the game don’t realize you’re probably behind some of their favorite mechanics or cards too. For a change of pace, can you list some beloved mechanics or cards you’re responsible for?

Here are the Magic mechanics I’ve had a hand in creating: Absorb, Addendum, Affinity, Aftermath, Aura Swap, Battle Cry, Bolster, Champion, Changeling, Cipher, Companion, Contraptions, Crew (Vehicles), Dash, Deathtouch, Delve, Dredge, Embalm, Energy, Entwine, Evoke, Exert, Exploit, Fabricate, Fateful Hour, Fateseal, Ferocious, Flashback, Flip, Forecast, Fortify, Frenzy, Gotcha, Graft, Gravestorm, Heroic, Hexproof, Host/Augment, Hybrid Mana, Imprint, Infect, Intimidate, Kicker, Landfall, Lifelink, Living Weapon, Madness, Manifest, Mentor, Modular, Monstrosity, Morbid, Morph, Multikicker, Mutate, Ninjitsu, Phyrexian Mana, Poisonous, Populate, Proliferate, Prowl, Raid, Rally, Reach, Recover, Reinforce, Retrace, Ripple, Shroud, Soulbond, Splice, Split Cards, Split Second, Suspend, Transfigure, Transform, Typecycling, Undying, Unearth, Vanishing and Wither.

Possibility of Gravestorm, Transfigure

Hello Mark, if or when: Gravestorm and Transfigure in a supplemental set?

If, they are both playing in space we are cautious about.

Were any cards with Gravestorm or Transfigure considered for MH1?

Not that I know of.

Tutoring Mechanics Stance

New 09 Oct 2017 Asked by phyrexiathings 38 Comments

Why has wizards straight up said "tutoring mechanics are a no go". Transmute and transfigure are very fun and skill intensive, while also allowing players to have "toolboxes" in their deck. I also doubt it's a balance issue because they only get 1 cmc worth of things.

Tutoring lessens variance and leads to repetition of gameplay. The occasional card is okay, but a tutoring mechanic is too much.

Aura Swap.

Transfigure Mechanic Prospects

New 26 Jun 2016 Asked by markensencjusz 15 Comments

Are there any chances for transfigure making a comeback?

I never say never but the odds are low. We tend to not do tutoring keywords any more.

Transfigure's Storm Scale

New 16 May 2016 Asked by onwordstheplay 24 Comments

Where is Transfigure on the storm scale?

It’s a 9 as we aren’t currently interested in making tutoring mechanics as it leads to repetitive gameplay.

Keyword Usage

New 02 Apr 2016 Asked by dukkhasatva 21 Comments

Not that I disagree with your decisions, but I think the asker meant why so many keyword abilities use only as a sorcery. Outlast, Unearth, Scavenge, Level Up, Equip, Transfigure,

Those are gameplay decisions. Read my “Choices vs. Options” article.

Common Tutoring Keywords

New 05 Oct 2015 Asked by bachtigh 11 Comments

Would a keyword that uses tutoring like Transmute or Transfigure be allowed at common in New World Order?

Unlikely. We don’t tend to do tutoring at common these days.

Transfigure Prospects

New 29 Apr 2015 Asked by slime-cutie 14 Comments

How likely to return is transfigure?

Not likely as we are currently a bit down on tutoring mechanics.

Mechanic Likelihood

New 20 Jan 2015 Asked by kaminorisu-blog 16 Comments

Transmute or transfigure? I know neither are likely to return, but which is MORE likely to return?

I guess transmute had more chance to show up in a supplemental set especially on a reprint.

Avoiding Tutor Mechanics

New 11 Nov 2014 Asked by andermisterson 19 Comments

Why wasn't 'transfigure' used again? Did people not like it?

We’ve been shying away from tutor mechanics as they lessen the variance too much and make games play out too similarly.

Evoke vs Transfigure

New 10 May 2014 Asked by frayace-deactivated20140521 12 Comments

Evoke and Transfigure are both things that I would like to see reprinted.

Here’s a game for today. You name two mechanics and I’ll tell you which one I think has a better chance of returning. Evoke defeats Transfigure.

Transfigure Mechanic Future

New 12 Mar 2013 Asked by 53ctum53mpr4-deactivated2016120 8 Comments

Speaking of Future Sight mechanics, any idea if Transfigure will ever seem widespread print?

I have a series of Future Sight podcasts where I talk about all of the Future Sight mechanics and what chances they might return. I’m in the middle of recording them so you have about an eight week wait.
