Mechanic Vocabulary Issue

New 26 Oct 2023 Asked by gridnack 50 Comments

I think Descend X, “if you descended this turn”, and “Fathomless decent”, have a vocabulary issue like Haunt did. They all mean different things. Descend 4 is a condition (similar to delirium/threshold). “If you descended this turn” is an action (similar to “if you milled a permanent or a permanent died” which is “Revolt”). Fathomless descent is neither a condition nor an action; it functions closer to Undergrowth/Chroma as a counting mechanic. As a tiny amount of feedback, using vocabulary in 3 different contexts makes it more difficult to grok (and remember).

Would using three different words for things so mechanically connected not cause more confusion?

Caverns Mechanics Synergy

New 24 Oct 2023 Asked by jimharbor 35 Comments

Caverns of Ixalan has Craft a "Graveyard as a resource" mechanic like Flashback & Scavenge and Descend, a "graveyard as a measure" mechanic like threshold and undergrowth. From what I can tell a graveyard had set has always been built around one or the other because the themes clash. Why does Caverns mix the two? Thanks for answering our questions, sir.

Both mechanics work with things that fill your graveyard, so there is some synergy, even if there’s also some tension.

Undergrowth Ability Storm Scale

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by grornt 30 Comments

I'm sure we'll see cards that count creatures in the graveyard a lot, but where is Undergrowth as an ability word on the storm scale?

I’d call it a 7 as an ability word.

Keyword Complexity

New 20 Aug 2022 Asked by raytyger 30 Comments

"There are keywords that incorporate a number so the mechanic can be flexible about its size/range."

I meant mechanics like Domain, Party and Undergrowth, that always use a same variable as X. It feels like they always end a bit clutered in the cards because of how much space they take.

We want to be careful how much we nest keywords (aka a keyword inside a keyword).

Challenges of a Single Ravnica Set

New 14 Nov 2021 Asked by theydiddackdirty 43 Comments

Hi Mark! In the past, ravnica's guilds have had mechanical overlap, such as the dimir's surveil synergizing well with the golgari's undergrowth mechanic. Do you think these overlaps could lead to a single ravnica set being possible under the current bloc model? Perhaps using several multicolor signpost cards to lend guilds valueable screentime while avoiding the overwhelming multicolor of dragons maze?

There’s simply not the space for ten factions in one set. Dragon’s Maze had all ten (after two sets with five each) and it had all sorts of issues.

Color Pie Position and Graveyard

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by legacy-rise 20 Comments

What is the color pie position of 'friendly to creature cards in graveyard', e.g. the undergrowth mechanic? 'Friendly to creatures' in general is primary in green and secondary in white, but does black also have a slice pertaining to the graveyard specifically?

Black is probably secondary.

Return of Storm Scale Articles

New 01 May 2020 Asked by thelyca 36 Comments

What ever happened to the Storm Scale articles on the wizards website? Will they ever return? (The last one was about Kaladesh and Amonkhet) They were very intriguing and insightful. Can we get storm scalings at least for Ixalan and beyond? Namely Explore, Enrage, Ascend, Mentor, Surveil, Jump-start, Undergrowth, Adapt, Addendum, Afterlife, Riot, Spectacle, Amass, Escape, Keyword Counters, Mutate, and Companion.

I’ll do other Storm Scale articles.

Undergrowth Mechanic Praise

Hello Mark, please high five whoever designed undergrowth. It is a very fun mechanic to build around, especially in brawl.

Will do.

Casual Play Metrics

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by conflictedcontradiction 31 Comments

What kinds of metrics do you use to measure the success for things like "forgettable" mythics that are more meant for casual play? Things like Undergrowth Champion, or Medomai the Ageless. Do you just trust the people they were meant for like them?

We have various data that can tell us what casual players are playing/collecting.

Exile Zone Mechanics

New 01 Aug 2019 Asked by calicopalicopal 36 Comments

I'm with you on not turning the exile zone into a second graveyard, but what would you think of using the exile zone as a barometer similar to undergrowth?

Battle of Zendikar messed in this design space.

About Ability Words

New 09 Oct 2018 Asked by swmystery27 60 Comments

"Ability words aren’t keywords. They can’t be mechanically referenced"- This interests me. Do you know why this is the case- is it a rules reason? Because this seems to imply you couldn't print a card that (for example) tutored for a card with Metalcraft or Undergrowth, and that seems kind of odd. What makes that any different from tutoring for a card with Flying?

Ability words are basically reminder text. Note that they are printed in italics just as reminder text is.

Golgari Raiders Usage

New 09 Oct 2018 Asked by ascoat 35 Comments

Golgari Raiders isn't completely useless if your graveyard has no creatures. You can still cast it and let it die from having 0 toughness, then you'll have a creature in your graveyard for your other Undergrowth cards.

It also triggers cards that trigger off creatures entering the battlefield or dying. That said, it’s a tiny bonus.

Undergrowth Keyword Explanation

New 13 Sep 2018 Asked by arcanistlupus 33 Comments

Why wasn't Undergrowth given a keyword like Devotion was?

It’s an ability word because a keyword can only replace identical text. Undergrowth cards work similarly, but the rules text varies based on the effect.

Logic of Undergrowth

New 07 Sep 2018 Asked by galedis-blog 63 Comments

What is the logic behind making keywords like Undergrowth? They seem pointless and a bit of a waste.

It’s an ability word. It helps players group cards together that function mechanically similarly for purposes of making a theme more identifiable and easier to talk about and focus on.

They’re all scalable effects.

Undergrowth Mechanic's Novelty

New 02 Sep 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 51 Comments

I feel undergrowth is a bit different from mechanics taken from individual cards and turned into a word (such as landfall, sunburst or kicker) because it's been widely-used and in particular is a big part of how green uses the graveyard. Innistrad alone had at least four 'undergrowth' cards: Spider Spawning, Gnaw to the Bone, Boneyard Wurm and Grim Flowering, as many cards as some named mechanics. It's been used with multiple other effects. In no sense is it a new or poorly-explored mechanic.

Being a focused mechanical theme is a different animal than having a few individual cards. The game is celebrating its 25th anniversary and we’ve printed over 18,000 unique cards. Finding mechanics that we’ve never done before on any cards should be seen as a cool thing that occasionally happens rather than something to be constantly expected.

Understanding New Mechanics

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 63 Comments

"Dominaria had two new mechanics (historic and sagas). Ixalan had two new mechanics (explore and enrage)." Technically four of the guilds either don't have new mechanics or (in the case of Izzet) have a minor variant. "Undergrowth" has been used on and off since Ice Age (Lhurgoyf), and with a range of effects - it's only the name that's new. Surveil too has been used in exactly that form before, most recently in Ixalan.

If you discount things we’ve individually done on cards before then many sets have zero new mechanics.

Confirmed Guild Mechanics

Have Converge, Mentor, Surveil, Jump and Undergrowth been confirmed as guild mechanics?

Yes, on the Magic stream.
