Excitement for Upcoming Sets

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 8 Comments

Hi Mark! Just wanna give shout out to awesome sets you have planned for the Dragonstorm arc: Bloomburrow for the high fantasy traditionalists and typal lovers, Duskmourn for the modern horror fans and a different take on an Enchantment matters set, The Death Race as a fun exploration of the Omenpaths and finally a set centered around Vehicles (I mean it's not confirmed but…c'mon), and a long-awaited Return to Tarkir set for Magic veterans and those who waited for a wedge faction set! I am absolutely stoked for all of these sets, and I am glad that Magic embraces variety enough to take risks for modern, novel aesthetics while still preserving old, familiar aesthetics!

I’m excited you’re excited.

Gift a Token Variations

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by thunderweb 2 Comments

"Gift a tapped Fish" creates a tapped 1/1 blue Fish creature token. If a card says "Gift a Human" or "Gift a Vehicle", would those tokens have different power, toughness, and color?

They could. It would be defined (most likely in reminder text).

Non-Creature Artifacts as Commanders

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by hobblinharry-blog 7 Comments

Regarding non-creature artifacts being a commander: this also even exists in not-silver border/acorn. Shorikai, Genesis Engine from Neon Dynasty is a non-creature artifact (its a vehicle so it can become a creature but its default state is not creature)

Modern Horror and Magic

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by zeropercentdiscountcomic 20 Comments

For what it’s worth, I actually think the biggest issue with Duskmourn isn’t the “modern” stuff, so much as Magic’s trend towards so many cards representing a genre trope, often literally by name. That said, it’s really exacerbated by the modern setting, which is unusual territory and thus feels like it’s there only to really ensure those tropes and references are as blunt as possible, rather than being a part of a cohesive world.A third factor that really makes this not gel for me is that modern horror relies on a threat that is anomalous and unique to be scary. Innistrad made a world full of Frankensteins and Draculas into a believable ecosystem, and I just don’t know that I can get there with a world full of Jasons, Freddys, Samaras, etc.All of this is to say, I would be a bit disappointed if this setting does poorly and the takeaway is just “no more tennis shoes.” I know there’s an audience for the tropey cards, but it feels like they’ve become so numerous and so blunt that it’s overshadowed the world building and left me far less curious and excited about new planes than I used to be. Generally, a magic plane with more modern technology and culture intrigues me, but when it’s just a vehicle for references I lose interest.

R&D Members Voice Acting

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by kuldothaphoenix 97 Comments

Is there anything to keep you or other R&D members from doing voice acting for Arena? Don't think anything could top a Vehicle themed Planeswalker entering play with a cry of "I'm pulling out of the driveway, aaand you know what that means!"

No one has ever asked. : )

Vehicle and Creature Survival

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 53 Comments

If I destroy your vehicle why does the creature that crewed it get to live? You sound have to flip a coin to see if your creature survived the car crash

It’s better gameplay. Also, most drivers walk away from crashes.

Maybe. : )

Asking about Giant Robot Vehicles

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 4 Comments

Hello. I'd like to see more vehicles flavored as giant, human-shaped robots. Can I get a non-binding confirmation that it's technically possible that some maybe, might show up in 'Volleyball'?In a related aside, I'd love to see a Gundam universe beyond set.

Vehicles, meaning the artifact subtype, doesn’t currently get creature types when it animates.

Special Frames for Vehicles

New 29 May 2024 Asked by vodalianjavelineer 47 Comments

Why do vehicles get thier own special frames? I like the frame, but it seems odd when similar subtypes like equipment or mounts don’t have one.

They had to have a power/toughness box, so we needed a visual way to avoid confusion.

Prototype Vehicles Prospects

New 23 May 2024 Asked by sjk9000 6 Comments

Could vehicles have prototype?

My gut is no, but that’s just a guess.

Jetpack Classification

Is a jetpack a vehicle or equipment?

Yes. : )

Neon Dynasty Design Origins

New 09 May 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 9 Comments

So you've said before that Neon Dynasty started, correct me if im wrong, without Ninjitsu or Samurai and more of a focus on Auras and Sagas vs Vehicles and Equipment, with Ninja and Samurai being the commander decks. How far along did those come? I've heard people say Isshin and Satoru were the precon face commanders and were put into the set instead? Is that true? :)

Ninjutsu wasn’t in the vision design handoff with plans of it being a focus of a Ninja Commander deck, but that’s the only thing you stated that I actually said.

Vehicles and Types

New 06 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 22 Comments

Aren't Vechicles that are crewed become Artifact Creatures with no Creature type?Like Shrine being an Echantment type, not a Creature type? Or does Vehicle somehow also apply as a Creature type? For that one guy asking about Creatures without types

Vehicles don’t tend to have a creature type.

Artifact for Vehicles Idea

New 05 May 2024 Asked by calpin-lord-of-nerds 15 Comments

If/when: A artifact type similar to equipment specifically designed for vehicles (and/or artifact creatures to expand design space if needed) that doesn’t fall off while your vehicles aren’t creatures?

If. It’s pretty niche. Enchant (Creature or) Vehicle basically has that functionality, though not an artifact.

Presence of Non-Permanent Subtypes

New 24 Apr 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 23 Comments

If/when another non- permanent subtype?
We've seen many new permanent types/subtypes over the years. Vehicles, clues, food, battles, etc. But only one new non- permanent type in the form of lessons.

If, but not necessarily soon. There’s just less design space for nonpermanent subtypes.

Vehicle Crew Abilities Possibility

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by gibbons56-blog 27 Comments

Could crewing vehicles / mounting mounts ever give abilities to the crew / rider?

Because they have to be tapped, it’s hard to give them abilities for the turn that are relevant. I could imagine giving them something that’s more relevant longterm like counters.

Vehicle Saddle Possibility

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by raytyger 46 Comments

Could a vehicle have a Saddle ability on top of a Crew ability?

I’m not sure what the point of doing that would be.

Vehicle vs Reconfigure

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by clomethegnome 35 Comments

Hey Mark! I'm curious why Set Design went for the vehicle variation for mount rather than the reconfigure variant suggested by vision design, to me the latter seems to capture the 'creature that combines with a rider' idea really well. Although maybe this goes back to the unicycle equipment/vehicle debate

It was significantly less complex/wordy and more intuitive.

Mount Mechanic Dynamics

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by natew000 44 Comments

Mount/saddle has an “elephant in boots” situation, and in particular it feels like it would be optimal deck building to include as many mounts as possible in a deck focused on the mechanic, so you’d end up with a lot of mounts saddling other mounts. Was saddle ever restricted on what kind of creatures could do it? (For example, non-mount creatures.)

We talked about it, but didn’t feel we needed the restriction as it just didn’t happen enough to be worrisome. It’s similar with how we didn’t stop animated Vehicles from crewing other Vehicles.

Saddle Mechanic Potential

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by saltdust-crusader 22 Comments

Will saddle be deciduous like how vehicles are?

It has that potential.
