Can ashnods coupon target a drink that is physically located beneath a shroud?

It can.

Identifying Drinks with Shroud

How do I know if a drink has shroud?

The only way I can think of would be Animate Object plus some effect that grants shroud.

Insights on Ward

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by theverdantchef 38 Comments

I'm surprised Ward wasn't among your top 20 mechanics. It's been the best version of hexproof/shroud and is very adaptable.

Ward is evergreen and is in my top 20 evergreen mechanics list (podcast coming).

Protection Keywords Podcast

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 38 Comments

It might be too early, but would you consider doing a podcast on protection/shroud/hexproof/ward as a bundle to talk about R&D’s evolving uses of “you can’t target this” mechanics and what you feel like you’ve learned from them?

I can add it to the list.

Ashnod's Coupon Interactions

on the ashnod's coupon/hexproof sticker ruling, that seems like it actually should work since players outside the game aren't "your opponents". I would think the drink would need shroud, not hexproof, in order to be protected.

Fair.

Shroud to Hexproof

New 19 Nov 2023 Asked by strix-soven 35 Comments

If/when: Shroud gets errata'd to Hexproof to match player intuition and "fix" Lightning Greaves.

If. We stopped making shroud because of player intuition, but I doubt we’ll do functional errata.

Potential Shroud Counter

when or if: shroud keyword counter?

If. We don’t really use shroud anymore, definitely not enough to justify making a keyword token.

Evergreen Keywords Removal

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by su92 55 Comments

When we see an evergreen keyword stop being printed, we normally have a replacement (hexproof instead of shroud) or at least something that fills the gap (menace giving evasion to black/red instead of fear, activated indestructible for regeneration). Would you ever just remove something evergreen? Like, something that isn't worth doing anymore, without need for a replacement.

We have in the past. Banding went away and nothing like it became evergreen. I think us doing something today is a little less likely, but not impossible.

Shroud versus Hexproof

New 15 Jun 2023 Asked by turnonethoughtseize 56 Comments

You've mentioned Shroud was an issue because people played it like Hexproof. Do you think a name change would help alleviate that? Something more descriptive, like "Untargetable"?

I don’t. It’s more an intuitive thing. Players didn’t want a downside.

Shroud in Supplemental Sets

New 28 May 2023 Asked by cle-guy 40 Comments

Would Wizards consider printing a new card with shroud in a supplemental set?

Maybe in a Modern Horizons set where it’s making a particular reference or it’s important to the design that you can’t target it. Most places we’d use shroud, we’d preferably use hexproof.

Shroud Hexproof PSA

PSA: Neither shroud nor hexproof functions on the stack; you can still counter a Geist of Saint Traft.

FYI for me. : )

Shroud on Stack

New 27 May 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 27 Comments

"This spell can’t be the target of spells or abilities”. "That’s shroud." Would the rules support an instant or sorcery having shroud on the stack?

I believe so. We’re more likely to use hexproof than shroud though.

Un-copyable Spell

New 27 May 2023 Asked by lordmohses 46 Comments

Hi mark,So there is now a card that has “this spell can’t be copied”. I’m curious about taking this to the next level, so If/when: a card with the text “This spell can’t be the target of spells or abilities”.

That’s shroud.

Unblockable Keyword Attempt

New 25 Nov 2022 Asked by blazinjsin 35 Comments

Why is Unblockable not a keyword? You can spell out when it's different, like can't be blocked by green, or artifacts, or tokens. Unblockable itself is very concise and easy to understand, it can't be blocked

We tried keyword it it back in Future Sight when we keyworded deathtouch, lifelink, reach, and shroud, but the wording for it wasn’t exact enough to work as a keyword.

Hexproof vs. Shroud

Does hexproof being evergreen raise the possibility for shroud to ever come back since people are unlikely to confuse them

I’m skeptical shroud is ever returning.

Removal Mechanics Discussion

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by blaze-1013 98 Comments

A friend is unhappy that Comet's damage ability can get through hexproof and shroud so I'm curious how do you feel about "targeted" removal that doesn't actually target?

Sometimes, you have to do quirky things to make the card work. I do think, as a default, “targeted” removal should target. Here’s my flavor take. “No Comet, don’t attack the creature with hexproof! Comet, stop! Comet! Bad boy!” : )

Ward on Spells

New 06 Aug 2022 Asked by annorax 30 Comments

Re: instants/sorceries with Ward/Hexproof/Shroud: the rules crunchiness is extreme. It'd have to be spelled out as "Spells that target this spell cost more to cast", "this spell can't be targeted", etc. Making the existing keywords work while the spell is on the stack would make huge, unintended changes to the way the game works.

FYI

Rules Complexity Issue

New 06 Aug 2022 Asked by wallycaine 24 Comments

In regards to Instants and Sorceries with Ward/Hexproof/Shroud: A big part of the problem with creating them is that we already have a definition for what those abilities do while the spell is on the stack, which is nothing. Otherwise, every hexproof creature would be untargetable by counterspells, and so on and so forth. So I'd assume a large part of why it hasn't been utilized is that you'd have to either rewrite the rules to give it a different definition on instants and sorceries, rewrite the abilities to always apply on the stack and change a lot of interactions, or spell it out/create a new ability.

Yeah, I don’t know the rules crunchiness of the issue.

Ward for Spells?

New 06 Aug 2022 Asked by fromhades 25 Comments

You mentioned something about how Ward only goes on permanents in your mechanical depth podcast, and this made me wonder - why can't Ward/Hexproof/Shroud be on instants/sorceries? Certainly more niche, but it's sort of like a more flexible (for Ward) or stronger (for Hexproof) version of "can't be countered". Is it not worth adding an extra layer of rules complexity to Ward/etc. just to have a slightly version of an uncounterable spell?

The rules might be able to support an instant or sorcery with ward.

Hexproof on Nonpermanent Hypothetical

New 19 Apr 2022 Asked by lover-in-blue-deactivated202404 36 Comments

I know that "Can't be countered" has the exact same effect nine times out of ten, but purely hypothetically: Would hexproof/shroud on a nonpermanent do anything?

Stops spell redirection, I guess.
