Suspend

Praise for Plot Mechanic

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by apphroditus 42 Comments

I want to second the person saying plot is a slam dunk mechanic. Suspend is my favorite mechanic, and plot has a lot of the same feel with the added flexibility and decision making, while being a lot easier for people to track. A+++, I hope we see it very regularly

Success breeds repetition.

Plot and Haste Comparison

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by 22bebo 21 Comments

Mark, why doesn't plot grant haste to plotted creatures the way suspend does? It feels like the two mechanics would run into similar issues there.

It’s an expectation thing. Playtesters didn’t feel like it was supposed to have haste. I think you choosing when to cast it just felt different than the spell counting down.

Praise for Plot Mechanic

New 18 Apr 2024 Asked by goldstarbubbles1993 40 Comments

Hi Mark, I just wanted to shout out the team for the great plot mechanic. My favorite (non-deciduous) mechanic long been suspend - I love the flavor of “pay now, get later.” Plot feels like a (really fun!) way to do some of that without the logistical issues of suspend. High fives to the team!

High fives to be applied.

Commander Suspend Query

Yuriko got commander ninjutsu, so when or if for commander suspend?

That’s your first go to after commander ninjustsu?

Suspend Mechanic Reflection

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by gnommunist-organizer 39 Comments

I forgot to do birthday trivia for almost three weeks D: so I guess I should ask about suspend!

Suspend was one of the greatest deltas between how much I thought players would like it versus how much they did. It shows the importance of how easy something is to execute. Suspend was simple in concept, but a lot of work in actual practice.

Phasing vs Exile

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by aramisuvla 21 Comments

Piggybacking on recent questions about exile; many effects that temporarily exile feel like phasing, or at least like phased out. For example, flickering or banishing effects, and suspend spells. One recent card, The Moment, uses phasing this way ("phases out until..."). Has R&D considered giving phasing a bigger role in the game for these sorts of effects? That would seem to make a path towards a world where exile really means "gone forever".

There are things that effects like flicker do that work differently than phasing in a positive way.

Favorite Card Insights

Hello Mark. I redeemed my coveted birthday rite several days ago, but it seems to have gotten caught up in the shuffle. I figured I wouldn't submit it on my birthday, which was the 6th, because a lot was going on then in Magic. My query was for any interesting tidbit about my favorite card in the game, Malefic Scythe from M21, and, provided you had nothing about it, instead the card that got me into the game, Errant Ephemeron from Time Spiral. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

When we first designed suspend creatures, we started with familiar vanilla and French vanilla ones. Errant Ephemeron was Air Elemental, and one of the first ones we designed. Happy Belated Birthday!

Dropped Mechanics

New 24 Nov 2023 Asked by jankenbrau 34 Comments

Have there been any mechanics that are easy to intuitively understand, but have such heavy reminder text that they have been dropped or reworked?

We didn’t cut suspend from the set, but it had that problem.

Suspend and Time Travel

If/when: Suspend and Time travel in a standard set.

If. Suspend isn’t super popular and has a bunch of structural needs.

Time Travel Rating

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by seththemusical 28 Comments

If time travel is a 7 on the storm scale, does that mean suspend is down from its previous 8 rating since they're connected?

No. Suspend hasn’t dropped. Maybe that means Time Travel is supposed to be an 8.

Design Insight

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by polluxr 49 Comments

As someone who is not a fan of UB in general and against mechanically unique UB cards, I must say that I'm impressed by Doctor Who cards; you can really see how much love and effort was put into it and it's always lovely to hear people gush/explain things they're passionate about. And hopefully it'll also spark some more love for time-shenanigans mechanics like suspend and cute self-recursive cards like Heaven Sent.

There really are lots of designs that would never happen if not for a Universes Beyond inspiration.

Red Card Mechanics

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 17 Comments

I see a few red cards today in the precons that exile your top cards and you can cast or suspend them, and any not used go to the bottom of the library. I like that a lot more than just gone forever as is typical these days.

We plan to use both.

Lord of the Rings Love

New 23 Sep 2023 Asked by krobat 18 Comments

MARK! I'm the blogatog from a few weeks ago who sent the ask about loving Suspend but hating Doctor Who. I saw Gandalf of the Secret Fire this morning and I am in LOVE and have already brewed a commander deck for him. Please extend my thanks to the design team for the Lord of the Rings scene boxes!!!

Will do.

Supplemental Set Scale

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by slayfrosty 31 Comments

I'm sure this has been asked before, but for the hard of remembering like me: Is there a Storm Scale for mechanics appearing in supplemental sets? I.E., suspend is an 8 or 9 depending on the day but has proven fertile ground for cards in supplemental sets. Or is that too hard to do, given that supsets have much wider tools available?

Almost anything can appear in a supplemental set, so it wouldn’t be much of a scale.

Saga-Creature Mechanics

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 27 Comments

In playtesting, did you find that the Saga-Creatures from NEO did not have the same "fighting human nature" issue as suspend creatures, where players assumed since they'd been waiting for several turns that the creature would have haste?

They originally could attack when they transformed, but it caused play design issues and was changed.

Suspend Commander Prospects

New 22 Jul 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 32 Comments

"I don’t know if a suspend Commander deck would exist if not for the flavor of Doctor Who." We already have Jhoira and Alaundo as suspend commanders, just needed more support for the mechanic

I’m dubious suspend is returning to Standard, which means suspend’s best chances would have been a draft archetype in something like a Modern Horizons. Would we have ever done it? There’s always a chance, but it’s far from a certainty. Universe Beyond designs just push us in design areas that we might not otherwise get pushed.

Universes Beyond Limitations

New 21 Jul 2023 Asked by krobat 83 Comments

Hi Mark. I know every product isn't for everyone, and I'm trying really hard to be delicate and kind and not ruin the Doctor Who decks for fans. I really, REALLY don't like Doctor Who, for a mix of reasons both about the show and about my personal life, so I was planning to completely check out of this product, no problem. But the previews start and there's a suspend deck. Suspend is my favorite mechanic in Magic, and it's really lacked a way to make it viable in Commander. Now the game prints a deck all about it... But themed after a show I (I am trying to be delicate) really dislike. So my choices are to play cards that make me unhappy to engage with a mechanic I love, or lose out on the chance to build a deck I would otherwise enjoy playing. This is shaking my support of Universes Beyond and now I see why people don't like the idea. Can you please pass along that Universes Beyond comes with the chance to push fans out of products because of the IPs chosen, and to really strongly consider making in-universe versions of key cards from UB commander decks and draftable sets? Thanks for everything you do.

Here’s another way to approach this. I don’t know if a suspend Commander deck would exist if not for the flavor of Doctor Who. The concept came about because we were trying to capture the feel of the show in deck form. That’s one of the big boons for Magic of Universes Beyond. It pushes us to mechanical places we might not have gotten to otherwise. The Timey Wimey deck, for example, is a very odd deck. I really don’t think we would have stumbled upon it otherwise.

Keywords Within Keywords

New 21 Jul 2023 Asked by wildcardgamez 25 Comments

Seeing as it was just done, what are your thoughts on keywords that include another keywords inside of them. I can understand ones making use of evergreen stuff like haste, but Time Travel having Suspend inside of it feels like it might be too much, as both of them are complicated mechanics on their own.

It’s something we need to be careful with, but I don’t think should be off limits.

Keywording Exile Cast Effect

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by renigma 38 Comments

Hi markI noticed one effect popping up more and more as of late, the wordy "exile that card, you may cast that card as long as it remains exiled, and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell"Has it ever come up to possibly make this effect a keyword, like suspend or phased out?

We’ve talked about it, but it’s still used infrequently in the larger scope of things.

Suspend Haste Reasoning

New 17 Jun 2023 Asked by jeffgfree 42 Comments

In line with the conversations of players not playing a card properly because they assumed it didn't have the downside; Suspend creatures got Haste because players kept attacking with them immediately after having waited for them to get cast, right?

Yes.
