Building an Unstable-Based Uncube

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by housefullofup 4 Comments

Hi Mark, I'm actually trying to build an uncube with Unstable as a base, but I'm running into an issue. I don't think there's enough contraption assemblers in the set for the size of cube I want to build. I've been thinking of possibly adjusting some of the overcosted assembling cards to be more in line with the power level, or editing some of the unfinity cards that open attractions to make contraptions instead. It seems a bit extreme to go and edit cards with stickers to suit a cube, but I want to avoid having to run multiple of a card or making the cube smaller. What do you think would be the most in-spirit solution for a cube centered on Unstable?

I would run duplicates, but if that is untenable to you, you could run clones, flickering effects, etc. which allow you to reuse the assemblers you have.

Contraptions and Conspiracy in Commander

Hi Mark, will contraptions ever become Commander legal? And what about a conspiracy Commander?

For both, I’m currently skeptical, but it could still happen.

Un-rules and Kindly Cognician

New 11 Jun 2024 Asked by yellowpie 7 Comments

Un-rules question: Does Kindly Cognician (“Spells you cast that refer to artifacts or Contraptions in their rules text cost 1 less to cast”) reduce the cost of Kongming’s Contraptions (“T: Kongming’s Contraptions deals 2 damage to target attacking creature”)?

Sadly Contraptions means cards with the subtype Contraption and not cards with the word “contraption” in its rules text.

Contraptions in Black Border Sets

New 29 May 2024 Asked by jaqeax 37 Comments

Greetings. I'm trying to make my rigger/contraption matters EDH deck, but it seems there is only one legal card in that theme. When do you project us seeing contraptions in a black border set?

I wouldn’t hold your breath. I’d look into Rule 0-ing it.

Contraptions and Bans

New 19 May 2024 Asked by themastah 16 Comments

With attractions banned in eternal, is there any hope for assembling contraptions in black border? Contraptions themselves are still black border, and I was really hoping we could see them in a premier set someday.

Attractions getting banned doesn’t help.

Stickers and Attractions

New 19 May 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 45 Comments

"Stickers have a lot of logistical issues, but yes, I thought both were mechanically very fun." I'm not personally a fan of stickers, but I have no problem with other people using them. I do however love attractions, and I would love to see more support (contraptions too)

I think there’s a lot of fun design space in extra decks, but I get why it’s a step too far for some players.

Mechanic Popularity

New 18 Mar 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 22 Comments

I was surprised that neither Host/Augment nor Contraptions were in your 20 best mechanics. I feel Host/Augment is a more fun version of Meld. How come they didn’t make the cut?

Neither was better than the other 20 I had.

Future of Contraptions

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by obazervazi 20 Comments

Reprinting assemble a contraption cards seems fraught, and contraptions aren't likely to end up in standard, but how likely are new assemble cards to show up in a supplemental set?

Sadly, not very likely.

Contraption Card Speculation

if/when "artifact creature - contraption.

If. I don’t even know the functionality of such a card.

Artifact Batch Possibility

If/when: 'Artifact - Contraption Attraction'?

If. Each needs a different back.

Contraption System Complexity

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by minoke5618 23 Comments

Can the rules handle the entire Contraption system and the Riggers needed to make them work? I mean, Attractions seem to work well.

My gut is probably, but the system wasn’t set up to be Eternal-level, so there could be complications I’m not aware of.

Artifact Subtype Questions

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by thunderweb 26 Comments

I have a questio-UN.Contraption cards go to contraption deck. Attraction cards go to attraction deck. If there are cards with both subtypes ("Artifact - Contraption Attraction", or "This card is every artifact type"), where should they go?

I don’t think we’d do that as we have to choose a back for the card, and it can’t be both. Also, Contraptions and Attractions work differently than one another.

Mechanic Complexity Scale

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by leomyr2 19 Comments

If Attractions are a 9 on the storm scale, and a new side deck mechanic is a 10, where do Contraptions sit on the storm scale?

A 9.

Contraptions and Attractions

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by violet-returned 19 Comments

You could have both Contraptions and Attractions in, say, a commander deck.
So, if/when Silver Bordered Acorn commander decks?

We talked about doing them in conjunction with Unfinity, but ended up deciding not to.

Contraptions and Attractions

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 18 Comments

If/when “whenever you would assemble a contraption you may open an attraction instead and vice versa”

If. That requires a set with both Contraptions and Attractions, a big ask.

Separate Deck Mechanics

New 02 Jan 2024 Asked by thunderweb 26 Comments

How do you rate contraption, attraction, or other potential "separate deck" mechanics in Storm scale?

Let’s call them a 10.

Attractions and Contraptions

New 07 Dec 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 32 Comments

Has any thought been given to changing the rule with attractions and contraptions so that when they leave play they go back on the bottom of their respective decks in a random order? It's a pretty big feel bad when any of 1000 soft wipes make the deck unable to play anymore.

The problem with that is it encourages you to play Attraction/Contraption decks at the minimum size rather than at the maximum size which we feel leads to less fun game play. They are both mechanics that we like at a high variance.

Universes Beyond Mechanics

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by itsdavid 41 Comments

Is it possible that we see mechanics introduced in Universes Beyond that are as distinctive as Attractions or Contraptions? Are designs like that still reserved for Un-Sets (despite some attractions being eternal legal)?

Universes Beyond sets are all currently eternal-legal.

Contraptions' Future

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by arcanistlupus 20 Comments

I've always wondered about Contraptions - you stated at the time that they weren't given borders with the intent that they would be black-border legal even though there were no black border assemble effects. But at the time dice rolling wasn't black board, and there are a number of contraptions that roll dice. Were you anticipating dice-rolling becoming black border back in Unstable?

I thought it was potentially possible.

Contraptions Design Intent

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by irlnautica 27 Comments

Was it intentional when creating Contraptions for Unstable that all their effects are ones that could potentially be black border legal? There's no art-matters or watermarks-matter or anything else strictly acorn in their mechanics.

That was done purposefully.
