Cipher

Expanded Design Space

New 21 Mar 2024 Asked by doopboopdoop 18 Comments

Are there any mechanics you felt you used all design space In the past that now has more to use due to changes in color pie or design technology?

There are definitely mechanics that have a tight design space that there isn’t a lot of room to make more practical designs. Cipher and fabricate are two examples. (And yes, there is room to make cipher spells in the three colors we didn’t.)

Mechanic Design Space

Are there any particular mechanic(s) that would be unlikely to see in a premier set (though might see one-off cards in a precon or Horizons set) not because it plays poorly, but because the design space for it is limited? Like if you made another premier set with them you'd basically be making most of the same cards but with tweaked numbers maybe.

There are numerous mechanics that are pinched for design space. Cipher and fabricate are the two that come to mind.

Cipher Mechanic Limitations

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by spyrohawk 26 Comments

How does Cipher have a limited design space? Cheap cards with any existing saboteur effect that’s basically an aura with that saboteur effect but you also get a free cast. Expensive cards with a normal Instant/Sorcery effect that gets the bonus of repeatability. Cards with “if this spell is encoded onto a creature” and have effects that care about the creature. Cards with “if this spell is not encoded” and change the effect if it’s been hard cast. Tons of flexibility, and super flavorful for UB.

The big limited factor is the effect has to work both as a spell and as a saboteur effect. The latter greatly restricts what can be done as it has to be valuable at a moment that’s a bit awkward. For instance, temporary creature boosts aren’t useful.

Cipher vs Haunt

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 28 Comments

"I think haunt has more potential than cipher as cipher has so much less practical design space." I think haunt has more potential to do weird, cool things, but cipher is easier to just slap on more spells to keep casting

When ran out of blue and black effects in the set that introduced cipher. It has a limited amount of practical design.

Returning Mechanics Potential

New 04 Feb 2024 Asked by spyrohawk 23 Comments

I know they are relatively low on the storm scale, but I really like both Haunt and Cipher. They both feel like you are doing something with your cards that they don't normally do, which I think is really cool. Do you think there's room for them returning somewhere, or similar mechanics being printed?

I think haunt has more potential than cipher as cipher has so much less practical design space.

You said Cipher design space was almost entirely used, but you could still explore similar design space in 3 other colors, right?

Yes.

Cipher Variant Proposal

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by tqmurdock 36 Comments

If you took another look at cipher and decided to add a variant where some effects would be cast at next upkeep instead of when damage is done, do you think (with caveat that your not the rules manager) it might be possible to just redefine cipher with the two options, or would that be a different mechanic?

That would be a different mechanic. We have discussed it.

Cipher Design Space

Is Ciphers design space that much less than other instant or sorcery keywords? I feel like it could work with nearly any effect as just a bonus way to reuse the spell. A bit tougher to guarantee than rebound or buyback maybe, but I would've thought it'd be in a similar boat to those sorts of abilities.

It has to be an ability that’s meaningful post-combat. That shrinks thing’s significantly.

Cipher Design Space

If/When - Cipher (supplemental sets) I saw Cipher is a "Storm Scale 9" in an article from 2016. Could that be improved (especially in a supplemental product) by simply not restricting it to U/B? I could definitely see a Flame Jab variant, a Bolt variant, a Rampant Growth variant, and several others that would be sort of a "Build your own Titan" style cycle. Heck, I'd love to see an *Arcane* Cipher, so you can splice it :)

Cipher has a very small design space. Obviously, opening it to other colors gets you some more designs, but even with that it’s limited.

Complex Design: Cipher

Do you have an example of a mechanic that's way more difficult to design around than you thought ?

Cipher.

Cipher's Limited Design

What's the most disappointing example of a design space that turned out to be much smaller than expected?

Cipher had way less design space than I’d hoped.

Sword Pair Challenges

New 21 Jan 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 49 Comments

It seems the Blue/Black sword has been pinned in a corner since most effects the swords generate are 1 mana effects in color so Blue has unsummon, scry, tap or stun left while Black has exirpate,-x/-x, sacrifice a creature left. And while there are other effects like tutoring, wishing, I do not think those would be put on a sword. It seems to me the Swords run into the same problem that Cipher did, do you agree? And was the Blue Black one left for last because these two colors have the least overlap or for some other reason?P.S. love the Red Green sword its nice that the effects have synergies with each other unlike the other swords.

Blue/black is probably the trickiest of the ten two-color pairs. 🐿️ - Dimir *is* tricky.

Cipher Concept Utility

New 27 Nov 2022 Asked by coatsville 23 Comments

In a recent DTW, you mentioned that Cipher didn’t end up having much drain space because you couldn’t use combat-oriented effects after the damage was done (giant growth being your example). Did you consider Cipher to be (and I’m not 100% sure how the wording might be) something like “after blockers are declared and this creature remains unblocked”? That would have enabled pump spell effects and other effects like giving it double-strike, or even team-boosting “all creatures get +1/+1” effects because it would trigger before damage.

And it would have made it significantly harder to understand. Grok-ability is important.

How many Magic creature types can you name that are also the names of past or current members of the X-Men? (There are at least eight.)

Expanding Mechanics

New 01 Aug 2022 Asked by mtgedhiction 23 Comments

When it comes to mechanical depths, do you think shallow mechanics could be less so by expanding the limitations they previously had, such as adding a color or by allowing a new card type to use them? I.e Aeve, Progenitor ooze? Or give red access to Cipher?

When judging mechanical depth, we look beyond restrictions applied in its first outing.

Possibility of Cipher Subtheme

New 07 Jul 2022 Asked by mushtard 49 Comments

With the amout of new non-combat keyword actions released since RTR (explore, venture, investigate, etc), do you think it would be possible for a Cipher subtheme to appear in a Modern Horizons type set in the future? I'm personally a big fan of the mechanic even though it is a little clunky.

I think one or two Cipher cards are possible in a Modern Horizons set. I’m less confident of a whole theme.

Using DFCs for Cipher and Haunt

New 08 Nov 2021 Asked by zackdes44 36 Comments

If Cipher and/or haunt were done today, would they be DFCs that were auras on the back?

One of the challenges in R&D is any two-state card could be done as a DFC. We have to figure out when it’s the best time to use that technology.

Knobbier Cipher Mechanic

New 24 Aug 2021 Asked by dlhochy 31 Comments

Now that we're familiar with the term "knobby," what's a good example of a mechanic that made it to print that should have been knobbier?

Cipher had a lot of issues with not being knobby enough.

Cipher's Design Space

When you say that Cipher ran out of design space, is that accounting for the fact that it was only in two of the five colors?

That didn’t help.

Exhausted Cipher Mechanic

New 14 Nov 2020 Asked by trifas 72 Comments

Would you say any mechanic has run out of design space?

Yes. Cipher ran out during design.
