Clarifying Modifier Rules

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by nootnooter34 7 Comments

Hello Mr Rosewater,
Un-rules question for you:Modular Monstrosity has the ability, "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you have five seconds to choose a keyword you haven't chosen for a card named Modular Monstrosity today that's been printed on a creature card."There is also a ruling that reads, "If the keyword has a modifier, such as a mana cost or a number, you must choose a modifier that’s been printed."
My question is, can you choose a keyword that has been printed on a creature with a modifier that's only been printed on a noncreature card. Cumulative Upkeep has appeared on many creatures so is a valid keyword. Can I name "Cumulative Upkeep-Add {R}" which has only been seen on the noncreature Braids of Fire?
Thank you in advance

You have to choose a mechanic and a modifier that’s appeared on a creature.

Appreciation for Arcbound Condor

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by edibleashell 8 Comments

Mark! Is birthday for me! I want to use my valuable birthday right to extend my extreme appreciation for whoever is responsible for Arcbound Condor. Such a wonderful card, definitely my favorite from the set and probably the year even. It fits in multiple decks I have and I'm just so happy it exists. So, for my birthday, cab you make sure the responsible party knows how appreciated they are? And if you want to share some arcbound/modular trivia that would be nice too.

The modular mechanic was inspired by the Chimeras from Visions. Happy Birthday!

Arbound Condor Appreciation

Hats off to whoever designed Arcbound Condor, I liked that in MH2 we had Modular focused around Boros, and now the one Modular card in MH3 is in Black! Also, crazy artifact payoff that I haven't seen anyone talk about. Love the card <3

High fives shall be applied.

Modular Mechanic Thoughts

New 10 May 2024 Asked by aalgot 21 Comments

Why do you want to fix modular by making it not flavorfuly make sense anymore?

I want it to play better, and I don’t think most players even know what the flavor of modular is. The word itself is super vague.

Modular Mechanic Update

New 10 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 17 Comments

Would "fixed" Modular come from Artifact Creatures first, and then be able to be put onto any creature when the original creature dies? Or would it be any type of creature?

I assume any type of creature.

Spikes vs Modular

New 10 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 27 Comments

Are Spikes the "fixed" version of Modular?

Fixed modular just lets you put the counters on any creature, not just an artifact creature. Spikes have similarities, but work differently in that it’s more about using mana as the resource to move the counters.

Modular Naming

If you liked the name Modular, would there be a possibility to make that the new mechanic and errata the old ones to have something like "Modular for Artifact Creatures"

It’s an option.

Modular Storm Scale

Where is Modular on the storm scale?

A 7, but a tweaked version would be a bit lower.

Buffet Allegory Explanation

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by justletmereadmyoldblog 67 Comments

The buffet allegory is I think a good one but I think it supports the proposition that WotC should be printing UW versions of cards for people like the cube builder. I'm a vegetarian which means the selection of things I can eat at a buffet is routinely restricted. But some buffets separate meats out of dishes to make them more modular, which allows me to eat the maximum variety without touching meat. And those are the buffets that best include me, the ones at which I feel welcome.

We do make some Universe Within cards, and I’m sure we’ll make more, but it’s simply not feasible, from both a business standpoint and a logistical standpoint, to make Universe Within cards for every Universe Beyond card.

Modular Mechanic Name

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by heavenlyevan 32 Comments

Modular is kind of a linear mechanic if you think about it

It is. Modular, the mechanic, wasn’t the best name.

Linear vs Parasitic

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 29 Comments

Sometimes a mechanic is for more than limited play. Energy was a whole mechanic that seemed highly pushed for competitive tournament play so much so that several of the strongest energy cards were banned and energy was still a decent choice in standard. I think the more parasitic a set mechanic is the more it is for constructed. Infect was like this too. Mechanics like blitz do not care how many you play in a deck. You do not get rewards for playing only blitz cards in your deck.

The word you mean is “linear” not “parasitic”. Parasitic only plays with cards from the set it is in. Linear means the cards pushes you play cards of a similar theme/mechanic. Linear cards more push you towards play mechanic themes in constructed. “Modular” cards, the opposite of linear, allow you to play them easier as one-ofs.

Keyword Errata Complexity

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by tybonel13 26 Comments

With keywords being remade, old cards that care about them could become obsolete. Why can't those old cards be erratad to batch the new and old parts? It's barely even a functional errata since they'd work identically as before, but with the new keywords included. Four cards from the Onslaught block cared about creatures with morph. They were changed to batch morph and megamorph as "morph abilities" when Tarkir came out. With disguise as remade morph and the implication that it's replacing morph entirely, why not add it to the batch and have cards care about the batch instead the single keyword? Same with discover and cascade, or how you've said a remade modular is more likely than modular returning. If fan favorite keywords are going to be remade and replaced, could they least be done in a way that's backwards compatible with the old support cards?

It’s a slippery slope. When is a mechanic a redone version and when is it just a tweak? What if we try something and then go back? The errata now possibly prevents us from reprinting the card. Functional errata can cause as many problems as it solves, so we have to be very careful with it.In the case of morph, the vast majority of the cards that interact with it say “face down” or “colorless” and don’t need any errata. This isn’t so say we can’t consider it, but it comes with baggage.

Hybrid Mana Discussion

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by eagle193 116 Comments

Hi Mark, in a recent response to a question about Legendary creatures restrictions, you said not all restrictions are good. To that I would say, just because you don't like the restriction, doesn't mean its bad. Same goes for hybrid mana in commander.

I think a lot of people misunderstand my issue with hybrid in Commander. One of the important roles for a game designer is to make tools to enable the players to enjoy the game. Those tools are given certain functions to guide the players towards the optimal play patterns. That’s what we call “design intent”.Now, we design lots of Magic cards and players do all sorts of things with them, often in ways we hadn’t thought of. That’s great. Magic is a modular game and a lot of the fun of it is finding ways to do novel things. My issue with hybrid is it’s the one thing in the Commander format (and the only thing in any majorly played format) that goes against the design intent. Hybrid was specifically made so that any deck playing that color can play it. A monowhite deck is supposed to be able to run any white hybrid card. You want a card that has to go in both colors? We have that, it’s traditional multicolor cards. The problem with going against design intent is that the cards then don’t work in the way they’re intended which impacts play experience and can cause confusion as game pieces aren’t working consistently across formats. From a game design intent, it’s frustrating. For example, let’s say someone made a new format called Bubble. The way Bubble works is players can only play cards on their own turn. Yes, instants technically work as you can cast them on your turn, but something is lost from their design intent. There would be cards that we designed that wouldn’t get played as we designed them. That’s my issue. I’m the Head Designer of Magic. It’s my job to be the defender of “Can we please not change the design intent of the cards?” That doesn’t mean anything is changing. It’s just me venting. Yes, I don’t like the restriction, but for a very good reason.

Modular Mechanic Support

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by toobrokeformtg 40 Comments

Hi Mark, can we please get more Modular creatures/support for the Modular archetype? I really love the mechanic.

It was in the vision design of a set for a little while not that long ago.

Common Card Utility

New 16 Oct 2023 Asked by titania776 48 Comments

Since there will be less commons with play boosters will each common will generally more powerful or slot into more decks? This also seems like a thing since there will be more rares first the commons to deal with.

Commons will be more generally useful. This means “sideboardable” effects will either be part of more modular effects or will get moved to uncommon.

Fairy Tale Design Goals

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by faerross 31 Comments

"Source material is a matter of taste."I fully agree with this; the issue may be conflicting design goals competing for space.

  • "Each of the 10 archetypes is centered around a specific fairy tale."
  • "Build your own fairy tale from a set of modular components."
It's not impossible to do both, but goals perpendicular to each other puts a higher burden on all aspects of design. How marketing framed the set is relevant; marketing and Magic story are both nonlinear, you can't control which elements a player sees. When describing archetypes, there's a lot of room between "led by Legendary creature depicting a fairy tale" and "has a fairy tale woven into the faction's very essence."Magic players like finding patterns, as evidenced by two cards making a cycle. The flip side is being unable to find a pattern you're told exists. Anyone following your blog had at least some expectations going into the weekend -- was the experience different for those who didn't know to look for all 10 archetypal tales?Kamigawa taught us that a theme not at common isn't your theme. Wilds may have its own lesson about factions designed as mosaics.

I don’t think these two goals conflict at all. We limited our references for certain stories to certain colors. In constructed, you can choose to put the cards from the same story together or you can choose to mix and match. Both are possible. In limited, you’re a little more at the mercy of what you open/draft, but us congregating stories in colors increases your ability to do that if you desire.

Game Inclusivity

New 18 Aug 2023 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 53 Comments

Based on your most recent post. Do you think Magic can be over inclusive? Is adding too much ever going to dilute the magic identity? Does magic even have an identity if it becomea too inclusive?

Magic, unlike most other games, is a modular game where you choose what pieces to play with. There’s not many other games with 25,000 pieces. : )What makes Magic Magic is tied to its core elements, the color pie, the card types, the card elements. Those are the things that wind through all 25,000 pieces.

Modular Ability Counters

New 22 Jul 2023 Asked by dwarf-scum 33 Comments

Do you think that we could ever see a version of modular that works with ability counters as well as +1/+1 counters? It feels like a cool design space, and a bit of a flavor win as well.

It’s possible.

Modular Keyword Rework

New 21 Jun 2023 Asked by tybonel13 21 Comments

Could Modular be reworked so that new cards can be different, while still maintaining synergy with old Modular cards? Like how Amass became Amass {Type}, I would prefer it being Modular {Restriction} so that Zabaz and Arcbound Overseer would apply to the new version too instead of getting a new keyword that's just Modular-But-Different.

I’m not sure there’s an easy fix to do that.

More Modular Cards

New 20 Jun 2023 Asked by phelddagrifphan 41 Comments

Hi! I made a Tumbler just to keep up with this blog. Question: I’m an avid EDH player since ~2010, and I love the Arcbound creatures, but there aren’t enough Arcbound cards for me to build a consistently themed deck. What are the chances of us seeing more Modular cards?

We’ve talked about bringing back modular multiple times. If we did, we’d probably rename it and remove the artifact creature restriction.
