MH3 and Cloak Mechanics

New 24 May 2024 Asked by athousandlights 8 Comments

I’m curious why MH3 uses manifest instead of cloak?

I’m not sure of the timing. Murders at Karlov Manor overlapped its design. Possibly, we weren’t 100% about the state of cloak, or possibly it hadn’t been added yet.

Meld Mechanic Future

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by zanmor 23 Comments

Meld might be my favorite mechanic ever (Manifest is probable second). Do you think a more mixed up meld utilizing artifacts could possibly get around the flavor issues? Like you're melding together different machines and that maybe looks better than Host/Augment natural creatures together?

The art elements looking good on a mix and match meld is a major stumbling block.

Facedown Mechanics Scale

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by 22bebo 32 Comments

Can we get a batch storm scale rating for morph, manifest, disguise, and cloak?

Facedown mechanics are a 4. We, and the players, like them.

Mechanic Overload Concern

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by nunziantimo 41 Comments

Why every set needs to introduce so many new keywords? I believe there are already enough. Stuff like Disguise, Cloak, Collect Evidence, Suspect, are born (and I believe dead) within Murders at Karlov Manor. LCI had Craft, Descend, Discover, Explore. OTJ has Crimes and probably more. I understand that it's fun to draft with new mechanics, but I hate when I am playing any format and have to search online what a specific new mechanic does.

We make new mechanics because players tell us it’s the number one factor of why they buy new sets. Disguise and cloak are just us updating Morph and Manifest, which I do expect us to use again. Collect evidence played well, so I assume it will return. Suspect is the mechanic I’m least sure we’ll use again, but I’ve said that about plenty of mechanics that went on to come back.If an excess of mechanics is frustrating for you, you might want to try a rotating format, like Standard, which greatly limits how many mechanics are available at a time. Non-rotating formats are just going to continually go up in mechanics. It’s their nature.

Psychographics Analysis

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by estufe 20 Comments

I hope you’re doing well, Mark. I study the Enneagram of personality and I thought you’d find this interesting. I believe your psychographics are analogous with what we call the instinctual drives: Tammy the “self-preservation” drive; Jenny the “one-to-one” drive; and Spike the “social” drive. (The names of the drives might be slightly counterintuitive to how they manifest in behavior, e.g., social types are often concerned about status.)

Interesting.

Future Mechanic Implementation

New 19 Jan 2024 Asked by gix-enjoyer 22 Comments

Hey Mark, loving the new Ravnica set and the revamped Morph/Manifest mechanics. That being said, I have a question:Considering that the team works on sets two years in advance, could we see successful set mechanics (say, cloak for example) appear in following sets before a two year period has passed?
Thanks

It’s a possibility.

Cloak Mechanic Explanation

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by dwarf-scum 23 Comments

There seems to only be one card that I’ve found currently spoiled with cloak on it and it doesn’t have reminder text. Is it just like manifest for disguise?

Yes. You play the card face down as a 2/2 with ward 2 and can turn it face up if it’s a creature by paying its mana cost.

Sticker Name Functionality

New 22 Dec 2023 Asked by aalgot 39 Comments

If I manifest the spell recall, put the name sticker “Ancestral” on it , kill it and then put it onto the battlefield with magar, I assume I can cast “ancestral Recall” when the creature deals damage to a player. But can I do that in formats where ancestral recall is banned, such as commander.

Putting an “Ancestral” sticker on Recall doesn’t change the functionality of the card, just the name, for effects that care about the name.

Reusing Keywords Flavor

New 24 Nov 2023 Asked by khaoskrtr 24 Comments

How likely would you to be to re-use an existing keyword in a set but call it something different strictly for flavour reasons? Would you ever do it? (I ask because there's a commander-set card that used a face-down creature to represent someone mysterious, but it still uses the keyword "manifest," which is fine for a one-of card but might not be the best fit for a Murder Mystery set, as an example.)

It’s not something we’ll do without a great deal of thought, but the option isn’t off the table. Note that our current strategy is to update the mechanic when we give it a new name (cascade vs. discover), so usually they play differently.

Manifest Without Morph

any possibility of a premier set with manifest but no morph?

Yeah, it’s possible.

Morph or Manifest Return

What's more likely to return in a premier set, Morph or Manifest?

Morph.

Returning to Tarkir

New 25 Jun 2023 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 46 Comments

If we ever return to tarkir, is morph (or a morph like mechanic like manifest) more of an if or a when?

I don’t think morph would be a must for a return to Tarkir.

Balancing Blink Interactions

New 08 Mar 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 20 Comments

Does the prevalence of blinking make Morph, Manifest and Prototype much harder to balence in older formats and even in Standard?

It’s an issue play design has to deal with.

Concept for Morph Mechanic

Have you ever explored creating an Ethereal Valkyrie type card for Morph?

You mean with manifest?

Manifest Mechanic Return

New 19 Dec 2022 Asked by jurrasicoresposts 22 Comments

a long shot but i have to hope, what are the odds on manifest ever coming back?

I’d call it a 6 on the storm scale.

Manifest Mechanic Preference

New 24 Oct 2022 Asked by zanmor 25 Comments

With regard to morph, I wanted to offer that manifest is my favorite variation of it, more so than the even the original (and I'm a big fan of morph). I hope we haven't seen the last of manifest either and personally I'd rather see manifest.

I doubt we’ve seen the last of morph or manifest.

Stickers on Manifest

New 11 Oct 2022 Asked by somejname 21 Comments

What about stickers on a manifest? do they stay when it flips? what about going to the graveyard?

Stickers work like counters on double-faced cards. If it turns over, the stamps move to the face-up side.

Trick Outcome Explained

New 10 Oct 2022 Asked by magpyfeather 54 Comments

There has been much debate on how a certain trick involving Magar of the Magic Strings, Recall, manifest, and an "Ancestral" name sticker works, or if it even works at all. Basically, you manifest the Recall, put the Ancestral sticker on it, have it die, then transform it into a creature with Magar, noting "Ancestral Recall" because of the sticker. Does this cast Recall or Ancestral Recall?

It casts Recall.

Unfinity Design Coincidence

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by oooblyjooblies 24 Comments

Is it any coincidence that Unfinity - which in many ways seems like GDS3's Bigtopia made manifest - features Chris Mooney as your strong second?

It seems only apropos.

Considering Muraganda with Morph/Manifest

New 27 Mar 2022 Asked by dolbyzalo 31 Comments

Could we see the Muraganda “vanilla matters” theme with morph/manifest?

“Colorless matters” would make a lot more sense, especially with how few vanilla cards we do these days.
