Interpretation of Skittish Seer Card

We got Helga, Skittish Seer previewed - but her card doesn't do any seeing? She doesn't scry or surveil or anything like that, she helps to cast big creatures. I was excited to see her card after reading the story and having this ADHD character featured, but now I feel kinda disappointed? Like, what the card does is cool, but it doesn't feel at all related to the character.


Drawing cards can also be flavored as seeing the future.

Scry and Surveil Together

I, and many other R&D members, prefer them not to be in the same set, but some set design leads disagree.

Keywording Card Draws

You've said before that you think keywording draw (number) into draw n (draw 1, draw 4, etc.) doesn't save much space and would confuse people, but I disagree. Most other games keyword drawing cards and would make the transition from other games much easier. Additionally we already do that with scry, surveil, etc. drawing cards is one of the most intuitive things in card games, i don't think we need to spell it out like we do anymore


The biggest sticking point against it is we just don’t really gain anything. We increase confusion for what?

Thoughts on Card Draw Formatting

Have you ever thought of formatting card draw as a keyword action like scary and surveil? ("Draw 1" as an analogy to "Scry 1?") Why or why not? Thanks for answering our questions sir.

Scry's Absence

There wasn't a single card with scry in MKM. Surveil was scry-esque, but didn't supplant scry to the extent that explore did in LCI. What goes into the decision to take a complete break on an evergreen mechanic?


Clue was doing the deck smoothing in Murders at Karlov Manor, so we didn’t need scry. Evergreen mechanics can be removed if something else in the set is doing what it normally does.

Keyword Fatigue Feedback

Im just gonna say I know my community is beyond sick of all these new keywords and actions and whatever you wanna call them. Like all excitement for Thunder Junction was sucked out the window when we read the phrase "commit a crime". Because we knew it was gonna grind another dozen games to a halt as we were going to have to look up the exact phrasing, because somebody was going to make some weird play. The same as its been with discover, and historic, and reconfigure. I've even had to stop and explain surveil. Even playing a precon took way longer because I had to essentially keep one card in my hand to make sure I was doing disguise right. And keep explaining it. And while I am it, ward. We had to reiterate all weekend what ward did, so people knew "cant be countered" got around it. And these are tournament players Mr. Rosewater. Some of us have been playing since 93. You cannot get more ingrained than our community. And we are so ingrained we know nothing can change for years. We know how design works. But we are begging you. Soon, please. Stop with the keywords. Just put the text on the card. None of us like having to pull out our phones to add more text to the effects.


The text for all non-evergreen mechanics *is* on the card, with the sole exception of a few high rarity cards where the reminder text doesn’t fit. And that’s been true for decades.

MKM Puzzle Art Feedback

Was there any consideration for making some of the MKM puzzles render/online only and having different, puzzleless arts for the actual printings? Or giving puzzle cards two versions, half puzzle art and half normal art? I'm mainly asking because of the borderless surveil lands. Lining them up to reveal letters and numbers makes for an awesome puzzle, but in terms of card art it's really distracting and unappealing (to me at least).


Our goal with the puzzles was allow everyone as much access to them as possible.

Sure, white’s the one to watch as it isn’t supposed to be good at filling up the graveyard.

Large Scry Numbers

Scry vs Surveil Distribution

The new WU hybrid card that has surveil makes me wonder: do colors get the same access to scry and surveil, or does the graveyard interaction mean you distribute the two differently?


White isn’t supposed to get higher surveil numbers. This card had a lot of discussion.

Hey mark. I haven't bought any new cards lately (since brothers war) but looking at murders at karlov Manor it looks awesome. Can you please apply gift fives to whomever designed those surveil duals. My EDH decks are very happy. Also I like the facedown support because I have an Ixidor deck, just waiting to see how much of it is in Blue haha.

Surveil Commander Design

As somebody who has wanted a dedicated surveil commander since guilds of ravnica, i just wanted to say that mirko, obsessive theorist is everything. Thank you.Were guild watermarks considered for this set? It still does feel quite faction based and I noticed the Ravnica: Clue cards have them.


We decided we didn’t want guilds to be the focus for Murders at Karlov Manor, so we chose not to use the watermarks.

Mechanics and Intended Features

Changing exert to stun counters would be a large change since it stops working with untap effects and being able to use those, such as Vizier of Tumbling Sands, is an intended feature of the mechanic. Same is true of persist/undying using finality. It is a feature, not a bug, that you can sac a persist/undying creature twice, reanimate it, then do it twice more. Also, changing old effects to use scry or surveil was largely a buff and these changes would be nerfs which generally upsets players.

Scry vs Surveil

I personally wouldn’t put both in the same set, but not all designers share that opinion.

Mechanic Naming Issues

Why are you using the same word ("descend") for two different mechanics? One cares about cards which entered your GY this turn (whether or not they are still there) while the other cares about the number currently there. Isn't this just going to confuse people?


Both are looking at the same thing, permanent cards in the graveyard. Not linking them seems more confusing them than linking them. If I had my way, scry and surveil would use a root word to show they’re connected.

Keyword Mechanic Changes

Bonsoir, Mark! When new keyword mechanics are made, we sometimes see old cards with identical text errata'd to have the keyword (like Surveil, recently). Is the reverse possible? For example, could Investigate on old cards be replaced with "Create a Clue token" if the designers felt it was the best approach?


I think we’re going to continue with investigate for creating Clue tokens.
