Typal Archetype Swap

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by miztickow 3 Comments

Could a return to Bloomburrow swap the typal archetypes like RG be Badgers and RB be Weasels or do you think the current ones are kind of locked in?

Let’s ask.

If we returned to Bloomburrow, what would you expect? The same ten animalsTen new animalsA mix of old and new animalsNo preference

Badgers to Raccoon Swap Timing

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by crisplycans 5 Comments

How late in the design process were badgers replaced with raccoon? Was the decision to make Gruul's mechanic expend already made by the time the swap was decided on? Or did market testing show the audience's preference before any of that was locked in?

The change was made mid vision design. I’m not sure when expend first got added. It was there at the handoff, although unnamed.

Badger Support in Future

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by drakeling7413 2 Comments

You said raccoons and badgers were the options for red and green. Since raccoons won the race, will there be more badger support in the future?

If the creative of a card wants to be a Badger, it can happen.

Separation of Mustelid Types

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by endertrot 11 Comments

Hello Mark! I’m loving Bloomburrow so far, but have only one nagging question scratching at my brain;I love mustelids, so the separation of weasels, otters, and badgers all into their own creature types without being able to really play them together with typeal synergy bothers me immensely. This feels like the hound/dog/wolf problem but like a 100 times worse for me specifically :( Do you know why it was chosen to make them all separate? And, if it was the body shape/habitat thing, might I suggest making martens a creature type, since they’re tree dwelling mustelids, and a lot lankier and longer limbed than ground dwelling weasels?

We tend to use words people are more familiar with, and “mustelid” doesn’t reach that bar.

Cut Animals in Bloomburrow

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 3 Comments

When you do articles/DTWs on Bloomburrow: Can you list some more animals that you guys considered for the set but got cut and if you had any planned colors/mechanics for them? We know about Badgers and such, but would love to hear if there were more :)

The two that existed as two-color archetypes was Weasels in black/red and Badgers in red/green. In early vision design, for a short moment, we had fifteen animals as we gave one to each monocolor. It became clear quickly it was just too many animals. There were many ones we talked about that never made the cut. Turtles and Frogs, for example, were fighting for the green/blue slot.

Number of Animals in Bloomburrow

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by imogenbits 12 Comments

I really love animals and how many different species there are. When you started talking about Bloomburrow's mechanics not being directly typal, I was hoping that there'd be a lot of one-off animals. But almost all of the cards revealed so far are one of the main 10 animals, with the main exceptions being the calamity beasts. Was there ever a point in development where the focus was more on showcasing a lot of different animal species rather than selecting a smaller number that act as draft archetype groups?

I talked about this in my first Bloomburrow preview column. Here’s a snippet:“Once it was on the schedule, I did a little advance work on the genre to familiarize myself with it. I realized that there were two ways it’s traditionally done.Take #1 – Animals represent groups of people. These people are mice, those people are badgers, and these people are otters. Each animal type has qualities that are consistent among that group, usually things that feel resonant with the real-world animal. In this version, the setting is usually a biome, and all the animals in it are ones who would live in that biome. The animals are roughly proportional to what they would be in the real world.Take #2 – Animals represent individual people. This person’s jumpy, so she’s a frog. That person’s sneaky, so he’s a fox. This other person rushes into things, so they’re a rhino. Each animal is used to represent personality qualities. In this version, the setting is usually something more human in structure, often a city, and the variety of animals is much larger. The animal selection here is not limited by biome, so you can have animals living together that normally would never see each other in the real world. The animals are loosely related in size (a racoon is smaller than an elephant), but the scope of scale is compressed.Take number one is easier for worldbuilding. There are less unique types of animals, and they’re organized by creature type. Because animals are used to express groups of people, they tend to act more similarly to traditional species creature types, like Elves, Goblins, or Merfolk. This pushes us more toward a factioned typal theme.Take number two is easier for design because the designers have access to a lot more animals and can make more individually cool designs. The twelfth Mouse card, for instance, is a lot harder to make different than the first Giraffe. This approach pushes us more toward mechanics that tie into a larger animal theme. It’s more likely we’d create an environment that was about a lot of different animals working together, putting the focus more on individual top-down card design.Aaron was more interested in doing take number one, while I was more interested in doing take number two. So, we did a bunch of market research. It came back exactly even. Half the people we polled preferred take one, and half preferred take two. In a tie, Aaron’s original vision won out, so we did take one. (Also, I believe more people internally wanted to do take one.) I do want to stress that both takes would have allowed us to make a cool set. They just head down different paths and would have ended up in very different places, mechanically and creatively.”

Choosing Creature Types

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by cobalts-beau 3 Comments

Your article a couple days ago goes through the reasons why you chose specific creature types for each color pair, but you didn't talk about any types you considered, but didn't end up choosing. Can you talk about a couple types that didn't make the cut as being a focus?

The two big ones, meaning the existed in the file for a while, was Badgers for red/green and Weasels for black/red.

Raccoons over Badgers in Bloomburrow

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by melleslob 13 Comments

Mark, I am a huge fan of the animal fantasy genre stories (Redwall was a favorite growing up) and particularly of Badgers, and I got really excited when Hugs was shown in the first batch of previews. I was somewhat heartbroken to find out that the Red-Green tribe was Raccoons rather than Badgers. I understand that Raccoons are likely a more popular creature, but I wanted to both express my love for Hugs specifically and a desire to give him more friends.

Badgers started as our choice for red/green. Part of our research was to look into market research on other animal choices and Raccoons scored very high, so we made the swap.

Overseeing Art and Characterists

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by inketc 8 Comments

Not sure if you oversee art but the Hugs and variant art clearly depict a european badger in one and an american badger in the other. Why doesn’t the same artist who does the initial art also do the alt arts? or at least give both artists a guideline?

Usually the point of alternate art is to have something different from the original, so we prefer to use different artists. You’re note about making sure both artists are drawing the same thing is a good one.

Armadillos and Folklore

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 41 Comments

Mark, I love OTJ, and how it uses the fauna, flora and folklore of North America to feel 'western'. Armadillos, Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Prairie Dogs, Buzzards, Coyotes, Roadrunners, Gila Monsters, Wolverines, Porcupines, Tumbleweeds (nevermind the Tumblewaggs), Beavers, Possums, Badgers, a knight riding a Moose, a battalion of various Cactus-folk and a Magic version of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox. Its like a roadtrip from my childhood through Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas was condensed into a set, even the panning for gold at a tourist trap! All I'm left wondering is when can we return so we can get a card inspired by John Henry, the steel-driving man, and maybe an ornery bison or two.

Please dole out copious high fives to those who had the idea that this set needs a bunch of critters from the southwest and the Rocky Mountains to feel like a western setting.

High fives shall be applied.

Bloomburrow Animal Guessing

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 89 Comments

Can I guess the animals for each color in Bloomburrow? WU: Birds, UB: Bats, BR: Lizards, RG: Raccoons, GW: Rabbits, WB: Badgers, UR: Otters, BG: Squirrels, RW: Mice, and GU: Frogs

Everyone is free to guess. Here’s what I said in today’s panel. 1) There are ten two-color pairs.2) Every one is a different animal. 3) Red/white is Mice.4) We’ve seeded some cards in previous sets.5) I said that Rabbits and Frogs were two of the animals.I won’t tell you if you’re correct, but I enjoy seeing guesses.

Inspiration for Morophon

New 10 Sep 2023 Asked by yuridragon 35 Comments

Hey! I actually was lucky enough to meet you briefly and had you sign a copy of Morophon the Boundless, wherein you made a comment about them being a card you had designed in response to people asking about getting a goat legend. Was this just an example or one you specifically remember getting asked about? And are there any others you remember wanting Morophon to specifically be a response to?

I get asked for creature type lords all the time, most often for creature types that don’t have one yet. The Goat request came from a poster on this blog that regularly asked for more Goats. Others included Insects, Homarids, and Badgers.

Different Color Rodents

New 03 Mar 2022 Asked by popcornbunni 43 Comments

Can every color get its own respective rodent/vermin? White has mice, Black, rats, and Green, squirrels. Rabbits fit Blue even if they aren't rodents exactly, but Red is harder to pin down. Maybe something known to be more temperamental, like weasels or badgers?

Gremlins are the rodents of Kaladesh.

Blue Strengths Concern

New 23 Dec 2018 Asked by unknownwarrior33 62 Comments

"Blue is the worst (aka fifth) in creature curve and permanent removal, so it’s odd you list them as strengths of blue." All it takes is a few really good cards in an area for it to be a strength (see Delver for example.) Please understand that I'm not trying to badger you; it's just that as a player, this unbalance has harmed my ability to enjoy the game time and time again. It's not just hypothetical.

You must play in larger formats (Vintage, Legacy, Commander) where mistakes of the past live on forever. There’s not a great deal we can do about that. If it’s really troubling for you, I recommend trying formats with smaller and newer card sets, like Standard, as it’s a much less of an issue.

Wyverns & Badgers Trivia

New 04 Jun 2016 Asked by kevinthewaterman 22 Comments

Hey Mark, hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend. I had a birthday trivia request - can I get some trivia on either wyverns or badgers in Magic?

Rysorian Badger, a book promo card, was named after former Wizards employee Rhias Hall. My guess is she liked badgers. Rhias was a Goth and worked in what was at the time called Events but we now refer to as Organized Play. Happy Birthday!
