Reasons for Absent Dogs

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by cheesedurian2 8 Comments

There doesn't seem to be any dogs in Bloomburrow. I'm sad.

In my first preview column for Bloomburrow, I talked about the two takes we could do for the anthropomorphic animal genre. Take #1 involved working around a biome, so it was limited to creatures of that biome. Take #2 allowed any animals we wanted as it wasn’t built around a biome. We obviously went with Take #1 which greatly shaped the animal selection options. Had we done Take #2, there probably would have been Dogs, but probably very little typal.

Disappointment on the Bloomburrow Preview

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by curiooftheheart 5 Comments

Gotta admit some disappointment with part of the bloomburrow preview. It was really cool seeing the counters in set list until the set dropped and it became “two of these are evergreen, two are ability counters which are deciduous, one is flood which has appeared on and off for two decades…and the ones new to the set are actually all just flavorfully named charge or verse counters in how they work if it’s just one-off cards building on themselves for an effect to count.” Which is super disappointing as it feels like if new counters are named they should mean something

I list counters a lot of the time, and it’s mostly for flavor. The majority of Magic sets have existing evergreen counters (like +1/+1), sometimes deciduous ones (like flying), and usually a few new ones that are charge counters with added flavor. Usually, if there’s some new functionality, that’s it’s own bullet point.

Batch Preview for New Type

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by dude1818 1 Comments

Is it possible to use a batch to preview an upcoming card type, such as "[existing type], [existing type], and [new type] are blahs"? Or are Eye of Ugin style previews basically impossible without blocks?

It’s possible, but needs a compelling reason. It’s not dependent on blocks.

Feasibility of Weeklong Spoiler Seasons

Do you imagine it would ever be feasible for us to get single weeklong spoiler seasons for new sets?

I’m not sure what you’re asking for, as we do weeklong spoilers.

Balancing Creature Types in Bloomburrow

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by okayexperiment 5 Comments

Hi there Mark!I know previews for Bloomburrow aren't quite over just yet, but one thing that I've noticed that I'm a bit sad about is how some of the creature types seem to be more favored than others in terms of number and rarity. This seems especially apparent when you look at Frogs vs. Bats.I was REALLY into the aesthetics and world building given to the bats of Bloomburrow, but looking at the spoilers so far, Bats have 50% fewer spoiled cards than Frogs (10 vs. 15), as well as only 2 rare bats revealed thus far compared to Frogs having 5 rares and 2 mythic rares.

The ten main animals are not exact in number, but they are in the ballpark of one another.

Number of Animals in Bloomburrow

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by imogenbits 12 Comments

I really love animals and how many different species there are. When you started talking about Bloomburrow's mechanics not being directly typal, I was hoping that there'd be a lot of one-off animals. But almost all of the cards revealed so far are one of the main 10 animals, with the main exceptions being the calamity beasts. Was there ever a point in development where the focus was more on showcasing a lot of different animal species rather than selecting a smaller number that act as draft archetype groups?

I talked about this in my first Bloomburrow preview column. Here’s a snippet:“Once it was on the schedule, I did a little advance work on the genre to familiarize myself with it. I realized that there were two ways it’s traditionally done.Take #1 – Animals represent groups of people. These people are mice, those people are badgers, and these people are otters. Each animal type has qualities that are consistent among that group, usually things that feel resonant with the real-world animal. In this version, the setting is usually a biome, and all the animals in it are ones who would live in that biome. The animals are roughly proportional to what they would be in the real world.Take #2 – Animals represent individual people. This person’s jumpy, so she’s a frog. That person’s sneaky, so he’s a fox. This other person rushes into things, so they’re a rhino. Each animal is used to represent personality qualities. In this version, the setting is usually something more human in structure, often a city, and the variety of animals is much larger. The animal selection here is not limited by biome, so you can have animals living together that normally would never see each other in the real world. The animals are loosely related in size (a racoon is smaller than an elephant), but the scope of scale is compressed.Take number one is easier for worldbuilding. There are less unique types of animals, and they’re organized by creature type. Because animals are used to express groups of people, they tend to act more similarly to traditional species creature types, like Elves, Goblins, or Merfolk. This pushes us more toward a factioned typal theme.Take number two is easier for design because the designers have access to a lot more animals and can make more individually cool designs. The twelfth Mouse card, for instance, is a lot harder to make different than the first Giraffe. This approach pushes us more toward mechanics that tie into a larger animal theme. It’s more likely we’d create an environment that was about a lot of different animals working together, putting the focus more on individual top-down card design.Aaron was more interested in doing take number one, while I was more interested in doing take number two. So, we did a bunch of market research. It came back exactly even. Half the people we polled preferred take one, and half preferred take two. In a tie, Aaron’s original vision won out, so we did take one. (Also, I believe more people internally wanted to do take one.) I do want to stress that both takes would have allowed us to make a cool set. They just head down different paths and would have ended up in very different places, mechanically and creatively.”

Lizard Shortage in Bloomburrow

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by xccoaster 5 Comments

I'm enjoying Bloomburrow previews far more than I expected. It might be too early to tell but so far I've been disappointed by the shortage of lizards revealed. As a player who does not love the friendly furry creatures (bats included), I hope to see more scaly friends.

It’s the black/red draft archetype.

SDCC Preview Expectations

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by emrachemicalromance 6 Comments

In this year SDCC are we getting a similar preview of things to come as the one we got last year?

No. It’s the weekend of Bloomburrow prerelease, so my talk is Bloomburrow focused, but I will be talking about things you don’t know about.

Themes in Duskmourn Set

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by 360noscopediceroll 2 Comments

Hi Mark, I genuinely love magic the gathering. Thanks for spending so much of your career invested in this game. I appreciate you for it. Earlier I read a fan question asking if we were going to see a serious set. You said that Duskmourn was. From the spoilers offered so far, I got the impression that this would be not be serious, based on art featuring of smiling elves wearing fanny packs, ghost busters weapons, and purple pet monsters. Are these outliers compared to what the set really is?

All Magic sets have some humor, but Duskmourn is a horror set at its core.

Bird Versus Mole Mechanics

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by puddlemereunited25-blog 16 Comments

Now that Bloomburrow is in preview season, feels like a great opportunity to ask a question about magic which has always bugged me. How come birds get to fly but moles and other similar creatures don't get an evasion mechanic called "burrow" (i.e. flying but underground)?

Because we have an evergreen mechanic called flying and not one called burrowing. : )The closest we have to burrowing is “target creature with power 2 or less is unblockable” first seen on Dwarven Warriors in Alpha.

Creature Type Errata Possibility

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by puppydolldaph 5 Comments

Hi Mark! Just saw the spoiler for The Infamous Cruelclaw. Its an awesome card! I was wondering since the creature type Weasel is now a thing would the Bronze Sabel be errated to Weasel instead of Sabel? Thanks again!!!

I did check and yes, sables are Weasels. I don’t know if any errata is planned.

Praise for Bloomburrow

Howdy Mark! I'm checking out Bloomburrow Spoilers, and I just want to say, I'm absolutely loving this set, I really enjoy Gift as a mechanic, please tell the Commander precon teams to use it as much as you use ward! Its such a great political mechanic! And I also really like Offspring! The meme of being a mid 30-something and all your friends are having kids is so real, even the Magic cards are having babies! LMAO Cheers,
Dave.

Glad you’re enjoying it.

Raccoons over Badgers in Bloomburrow

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by melleslob 13 Comments

Mark, I am a huge fan of the animal fantasy genre stories (Redwall was a favorite growing up) and particularly of Badgers, and I got really excited when Hugs was shown in the first batch of previews. I was somewhat heartbroken to find out that the Red-Green tribe was Raccoons rather than Badgers. I understand that Raccoons are likely a more popular creature, but I wanted to both express my love for Hugs specifically and a desire to give him more friends.

Badgers started as our choice for red/green. Part of our research was to look into market research on other animal choices and Raccoons scored very high, so we made the swap.

Bloomburrow Teaser Mechanics

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 2 Comments

Hi Mark! Unless there's more spoilers we're missing, what are the "two mechanics that came out in the same set return each part of a different two-color archetype" in the Bloomburrow teaser?

Flashback and threshold.

Designing Alania, the Divergent Storm

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by junejulyaugustdecember 3 Comments

Hi Mark! Bloomburrow looks amazing from the previews we've seen, hope you're all feeling pleased with the reactions. I had a question about Alania, the Divergent Storm - was the card originally designed to give "gift a card" to your spells? The wording for it feels really similar.

That’s where we started, but the rules/templating didn’t allow it, so we had to use slightly different rules text.

Bloomburrow Gameplay Expectations

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by themartiangeek 79 Comments

I really love the flavor and art of Bloomburrow. (I haven't read the story yet, since I'm still several sets behind on MTG story, but will definitely get to it at some point.) But I am worried that it will end up being a relatively weak set in terms of gameplay/card usefulness outside of limited, especially after today's previews,

We have a whole play design team who works to ensure every set has tournament relevant cards.

Artifact-Related Issues in Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by polluxr 27 Comments

I was checking out the previews for Bloomburrow and people were raising concerns about Ygra turning every creature into an artifact creature (since Foods are inherently artifacts). Someone raised the point that those tokens (Clues, Treasure, Food, Maps, Blood Junk, etc) could have been given a unique type to avoid unwanted artifact-related issues. Was that ever considered/discussed?(loving the cards so far and I already love "Hop/bounce" as a mechanic for frogs and foraging for squirrels! Also looking forward to the pay/gain life for bats since Orzhov is my favorite pair. My compliments to the chefs! Great cooking!)

We consider artifact synergy a feature, not a bug.

Changeling Role in Typal Sets

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by tevans-living-life 40 Comments

Does Bloomburrow prove that a typal-themed set doesn’t need changeling to work? Or will Changeling stick around for typal sets with heavier creature type emphasis?

The as-fan of typal themes is a lot lower than sets like Lorwyn or Ixalan. “Here’s a snippet from my article today that touches upon this:To give you a sense of what I mean by a sprinkling, here are the typal rewards for Frogs:
  • A common that costs less if you have a Frog
  • An uncommon sorcery with a rider if you have a Frog
  • An uncommon land with an effect that helps Frogs
  • An uncommon land and a rare creature that cares if a Frog entered the battlefield this turn
  • An uncommon creature and a rare creature that grant Frogs an ability
  • A rare creature that cares about casting Frogs
The number of typal cards can vary slightly, but that will give you a rough idea of the as-fan I’m talking about.”Here’s a link to the whole article:

Rules Text Highlighting

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by americanlantern 14 Comments

I have seen some previews today including the keyword offspring that are highlighted in the rules text. Is that how they will be printed or is this just for the preview? One of the cards was Warren Warleader, as an example.

It’s not highlighted on the actual cards. That’s just to put focus on it in the preview.
