Overseeing Art and Characterists

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by inketc 8 Comments

Not sure if you oversee art but the Hugs and variant art clearly depict a european badger in one and an american badger in the other. Why doesn’t the same artist who does the initial art also do the alt arts? or at least give both artists a guideline?

Usually the point of alternate art is to have something different from the original, so we prefer to use different artists. You’re note about making sure both artists are drawing the same thing is a good one.

Top 5 Musical Preferences

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by coatsville 9 Comments

Mark, my birthday was the day after yours but I couldn’t come up with a trivia question. My wife and I are taking a 20th anniversary trip (delayed 3 years because of COVID first and then a desire to see our German exchange student’s graduation) to Europe. Today, I just had a Piece-a Pisa Pizza in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa! Knowing your love of pizza, puns and dad jokes, figured you’d get a kick out of this! If you’d indulge a belated birthday question (albeit not Magic trivia), could you please give me your Top 5 favorite musicals (yet another interest we share along with pizza)?

My #1 musical is Little Shop of Horrors. #2 through #5 is a bit harder to classify?Other musicals I’m fond of: Pippin, Beetlejuice, Something Rotten, Chicago, Chess, Book of Mormon, and A Chorus Line.Happy Belated Birthday!

Connecting Through Magic

New 26 May 2024 Asked by gring-mushroomspores 1 Comments

Happy birthday and greetings from Europe!!Personal Magic story here: A while back, I introduced a friend to the game. A few friends and I sat down to teach them the rules and we drafted some Mystery Boosters. They then started drafting and playing Magic locally where they lived. They started a little discord server with more people, and I've met many new friends in that manner, people I hold dear. They in turn also introduced some people to Magic. One of these people I would later meet when we met to play a round of commander. And they would eventually become my girlfriend! And still are! So yeah I'd say Magic has been a part of some very important times in my life. I connect through it with some of my oldest and closest friends. Thank you for everything you do for the game and by extension, us players! You truly are a treasure, Mark.

Thanks, and I liked your story.

Magic's Global Markets

New 17 May 2024 Asked by cassiesuccubus 39 Comments

Hi Mark. You've been talking a lot, especially in relation to Strixhaven and OTJ, about how some themes don't resonate well with outside of the US. I was wondering though, what are the biggest markets for Magic after the US?

Japan is the next biggest market. Then I think some European countries. I know tabletop games are super popular in Germany. I don’t know the exact order beyond #2.

Europe Travel Plans

New 05 Mar 2024 Asked by attelino 22 Comments

Hi Mark! I was sad to hear on the latest DtW that you aren't coming to Europe this year. Last year, Barcelona was a bit outside my price range, but Amsterdam would still have been in my budget. I hope you'll return to central Europe next year :)

I will be back to Europe, just not this year.

LOTR & Eldraine Design

New 11 Jul 2023 Asked by hobblinharry-blog 32 Comments

Was there a challenge in designing Lord of the Rings and Wilds of Eldraine so close together? Obviously at the end of the day they are very different flavorfully but I think it’s fair to say that one of the many inspirations for the original Eldraine is LOTR so there has to be an overlap in design somewhat ?

Eldraine is heavily influenced by Arthurian mythology and the fairy tales of Central Europe.

Diverse Plane Inspiration

New 05 Jul 2023 Asked by melusthesorcerer 77 Comments

Hey, Mark! Normally we visit planes that have one source of inspiration, like Kaldheim that is inspired by Norse mythology, or two sources that are somewhat similar, like Eldraine that's inspired by fairytales and Arthurian legend, both connected to European folklore, but could we visit a plane whose sources of inspiration are very different? Like a plane inspired by ancient Rome and Wild West at the same time, for example?

Nothing is off limits, but the world needs to feel cohesive.

MagicCon Barcelona Visit

New 10 May 2023 Asked by anyguy 25 Comments

I've seen that it was announced, that you will be at MagicCon Barcelona. I hope to see you there and I'm very glad WotC decided to do an event in Europe 😊

I’m excited for the event. I haven’t been to Europe since my 2019 trip to London.

Distinguishing Lorwyn and Eldraine

New 01 Dec 2022 Asked by captainjackharness 32 Comments

Have you personally done any considering on what you could do with Lorwyn to more broadly separate it from Eldraine (they both feature a vague European fairy tale aesthetic) assuming that you got the greenlight to do the former? Or is that sort of brainstorming something you do only once a Vision Design starts up for a set/plane/product?

I think through a lot of possible ideas, because it’s part of my job to pitch new set concepts.

Eldraine vs Lorwyn

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by piccadilly-blue 43 Comments

Would it be safe to assume that Eldraine has supplanted Lorwyn/Shadowmoor as the "lighthearted western european high fantasy world"? At least for premier releases?

I think Lorwyn is more defined by its duality.

Spelling Bee Assistance

New 26 Sep 2022 Asked by tmdoublezero 25 Comments

My (most likely from mainland europe) opponent attacks me with spelling bee, it's an unfinity draft, so every card is in english. I'm not an english native speaker either and I feel my ability of pronouncing some english words correctly is sketchy at best. Can I search a video of someone saying the word I choose online on my phone and make my opponent hear that? Or do I have to pick a word I know I can pronounce in a correct way?

You can use a video if it helps.

Time Zone Request

New 15 Aug 2022 Asked by nevernotbluu 22 Comments

Hi Mark! Not a big thing, but when including times in an announcement, would you please also specify the timezone? Many thanks from a European fan.

Sorry. I think times are always PST.

Boundaries of Fantasy

New 13 Jan 2022 Asked by wynnecluster 52 Comments

I feel like a lot of people have a very narrow view of what is or isn't fantasy and what is or isn't sci-fi based on very Western and in particular USian ideas of mass media. There really aren't hard set lines for these things and I'm glad to see Magic being allowed to expand further beyond the "vaguely medievil europe with wizards" box that people like to keep fantasy in. (acknowledging also that Magic hasn't constrained itself quite that much even before, just Neon Dynasty is a step further)

One of the big questions we keep asking ourselves is “what exactly makes a set feel like Magic?” Time has shown us it’s much more expansive than we thought back in the day.

Creative Design Space in Magic

New 13 Jan 2022 Asked by ceil420 37 Comments

On the other side of the coin of some recent asks, I love how far you're pushing Magic creative design boundaries with NEO! I have strong reservations about Universes Beyond, because I'm worried you won't explore that creative design space in-universe the way I want you to do. There is definitely a spectrum of desired creativity for Magic, and it's not limited to "high medieval european fantasy". Thank you for taking a risk with NEO, and I look forward to SNC and other creative firsts : )

I’m getting a lot of posts from people excited about Neon Dynasty. I do understand that it’s pushing some boundaries and there may be things individual players don’t like. I am interested in hearing what people don’t like (there is a level where something is upsetting enough players that it will encourage change in the future), but I’m also interested in hearing what people do like as well (which will also influence future decisions).

Visiting Medieval Europe in Eldraine

New 06 Dec 2021 Asked by melusthesorcerer 50 Comments

Since Eldraine is going to be more focused on the fairy tale elements, could we visit a different plane with a medieval Europe aesthetic with a knight theme?

The issue with the Camelot portion of Eldraine was it wasn’t unique to Eldraine. Dominaria and Alara, for example, both had a “medieval Europe aesthetic with a knight theme”.

Influences in Strixhaven Design

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by garyoakriginal 42 Comments

Strixhaven is a Magical University with experiences of the team taken to help make it. This is a solid world or story building technique. The sets in Theros and Amonket couldn't use every Greek/ Egyptian story or event. The topics explored are too large to get every unique detail of every topic. FYI a lot of people are describing college in Europe effectively the same as some US Universities with slightly different words. Strixhaven is also not a parallel to US University, just inspired by it.

Being the set was made mostly by Americans, our experiences were going to shape things a bit. There is a lot though that is based more on the magical school tropes or on the needs of a Magic set than on US universities.

Secret Lair Costs

New 18 Jan 2020 Asked by wulfy-art 32 Comments

Hi Mark, I don't know to what extent you're able to answer this, but, I have a question about secret lair products, I live in Europe (Belgium specifically) and the import/shipping fees doubled the price of the product (~ +25$), now as I understand it Secret Lair is a print to demand product and MTG cards are also printed right here in Belgium, is there a reason these products can't be printed closer by for European customers?

All I can say right now is we are aware of the global accessibility issues with Secret Lair and are trying to figure out ways to address them.

Holiday Gratitude

New 24 Dec 2019 Asked by chosenone919-blog 57 Comments

Hello Mark, as it is already Christmas in Europe, I wanted to say Thank you for everything you did for us, although most of us are really not that easy. Thanks for all the time you answer our questions even if they come back all the time and there are so many different opinions from Commander, Limited or Constructed Players etc. Have a nice day and Merry Christmas!

Thank you. It means a lot to hear all these kind words.

Eldraine Fairytales Origin

Could a return to Eldraine involve non-European-based fairytales? Say like the monkey king?

That would be a different plane.
