Badgers to Raccoon Swap Timing

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by crisplycans 5 Comments

How late in the design process were badgers replaced with raccoon? Was the decision to make Gruul's mechanic expend already made by the time the swap was decided on? Or did market testing show the audience's preference before any of that was locked in?

The change was made mid vision design. I’m not sure when expend first got added. It was there at the handoff, although unnamed.

Complexity in Bloomburrow

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 13 Comments

Hi Mark. I love Bloomburrow's design from veteran perspective! It's such a novel way to do a 10 color pair faction set. However, from a new player's perspective, I hope it won't be too overwhelming since the mechanics so far spoiled include Landfall, Storm, Flashback, Threshold, Gift, Offspring, Expend, Prowess, Forage, Food/Treasure, Valiant, 10 Typal themes, Pawprints, and Classes. Was there concern about complexity creep or do you think the 10 typal motif will facilitate learning the mechanics in the set (I'm not sure what you would call this phenomenon where, counterintuitively, adding more complexity simplifies cognitive processing, like adding hyphens to phone numbers)?

Most of the mechanics are put into a specific animal two-color pair, so you don’t end up playing the majority of these mechanics together. They are also on the simpler end of the spectrum.

Exclusive Mechanics Question

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by su92 27 Comments

We've seen very few cards as of yet, but are the following mechanics exclusive to their faction: Valiant (Mice), Thresold (Rats), Expend (Racoons), Forage (Squirrels)? Or can we expect to see at least a little of (some of) them in more colors?

Those four mechanics are unique to one animal archetype.

Using Mana to Cast Cards

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 27 Comments

Do you actually have to use the mana you expend or is tapping the mana and adding it to your mana pool enough?

You have to cast the cards.

Expend Mechanic's Wording

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by moonsliceman 25 Comments

May I request some detail about why expend is templated this way? I think it's a very cool mechanic, but it reads like it cares about you doing something four times rather than having done something a fourth time.

It’s not about doing it a fourth time. It’s talking about casting some number of spells with a combined mana value of 4 or greater.

Design Space Sustainability

New 23 May 2024 Asked by caseyuptobat 4 Comments

Indefinite growth is impossible to sustain. You're going to run out of design space eventually, and you're going to exhaust a lot of community goodwill pretending that this isn't reality, Mark. The creation of new cards that outperform older cards as design space is expended at any given broad level of power is ultimately inevitable, and it is *this* that players are referring to as a power creep problem. The most popular format is commander, a non-rotating format. The most popular way to play, based on your own information, is unformatted "kitchen table" magic which is also non-rotating. The vast majority of people who play magic do not do so caring about Type II organized play format.

Magic has plenty of design space left. Even if we stopped making new mechanics, we could mix and match what we already made for years. Here’s the larger issue. The core of Magic’s essence is that it constantly evolves. It’s okay that new cards displace old cards. That’s what’s supposed to happen.Plus, remember, Commander is a casual format. If you enjoy the older version of an effect, you can still play it. New cards don’t make old cards disappear.

Showcase Set Ideas

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by randomette2 35 Comments

" I am interested in feedback if you all like the idea of a showcase set. If the answer is yes, are there other themes you'd like to see?" I would like to see the idea expended on, yeah. Some ideas of showcase themes: -A tournament or competition; -a trapped plane/prison plane that captures people from across the multiverse; -a clash between two or more planes.

There are many ways to do a showcase set. Everyone should remember that when I say a “showcase” set I mean, the set is built around a theme, and then we bring characters, and potential other things like objects, there that fit that larger theme. Next year’s omenpath set is Tennis and it’s a different kind of set, what I’m calling a travelogue set" where there is something that takes place over multiple worlds, in Tennis’ case a race.

Experience Counters as Resources

New 28 Dec 2023 Asked by crimsonandrose-blog 37 Comments

If/when legendary creature/s that utilizes experience counters as a expendable resource. being bring back level up but instead of mana you need to spend experience counters

If, for exactly experience counters, but probably when for some kind of resource counter.

Limit on Alternate Treatments

New 05 Oct 2021 Asked by 22bebo 25 Comments

Since alternate frames and treatments seem to cost less than something like DFCs, do you have an estimate on the upper ceiling for number of alternate treatments in a set? Is it gated by another resource?

I said alternate frames have a people hour cost, but not a lot of outside expenditure.I didn’t talk about art though. That’s the biggest expenditure of alternate treatments.

Goblin Intelligence Aspect

New 02 Dec 2018 Asked by xitoshi 51 Comments

Re: Intelligent Goblins. As a goblin fan, I think goblins as a race have been shown to be quite intelligent. Aside from exceptional individuals, they are consistently shown as great inventors and engineers. I think the most important traits are that they are chaotic, hasty and expendable. Their inventions explode, yes, but because they don't care: it's a calculated risk. Maybe the execution in Mercadia was off, but goblins have an intelligent side that can be explored.

Goblins can have an aptitude for invention. That is not the same as being intelligent.

Core Set 2018 Query

New 20 Apr 2018 Asked by noahdoubt-blog 28 Comments

If it's "not on Dominaria," does that mean Core Set 2018 will be set on one single plane? I think it would be cool and perfectly doable to have a core set revisit for example Zendikar, Alara, etc. (although I know that would also "expend" a revisit of that plane.)

The question was about the fall set, not the Core set.

Accepting Outside Ideas

New 16 Apr 2017 Asked by tempus-vulpes 37 Comments

I think the question still remains, why CAN'T people offer up new things? Most especially card ideas. It seems to me that magic could expend at an exponential rate beyond what it has been if it accepted outside ideas.

It isn’t a rule I made, but it is a rule I have to follow.

Energy vs Splice

New 05 Sep 2016 Asked by subbak 45 Comments

Energy spell having a use outside of energy either because they still have another effect, or because they give you energy so you can spend it for the spell's effect, doesn't make this non-Parasitic. With the exception of Evermind, you can still play Splice onto Arcane spells in decks with no other Arcane spells, and it's often done with Through the Breach and with Desperate Ritual, in different Modern decks.

I never said Energy wasn’t parasitic. I said it was significantly less than parasitic than Splice onto Arcane. Splice onto Arcane is an additive (and powerful) ability. Spells with it have to pay extra for the ability so you have very little incentive to play a Splice spell you never plan to splice.Energy, in contrast, gives you an ability with the proper amount of energy to use that ability. Because there’s an Energy economy (each energy expenditure values Energy at the same rate), there is less requirement to play other Energy cards. Yes, there is some Energy synergy in that you get more choices, but that synergy is worth far less than the ability to repeatedly get an effect without costing a card.

Alternate Flavor Text

New 29 Aug 2015 Asked by humanclothing 27 Comments

So, you don't print cards with two different arts in a single set because it's confusing for players who have to identify the card using the art from across the table. What about alternate flavor text? Is there a reason you don't print cards with the same name and art but different flavor texts?

Alternate flavor text would create a lot of additional work and I’m not sure it would be the best place to expend resources.

Upkeep Costs Decline

New 13 Nov 2014 Asked by hexciple 18 Comments

Why did upkeep costs mostly go away? On top of being flavorful (needing to expend mana to maintain an effect), it parallels outlast in that it's more strategically interesting to decide up front what some of your mana is being spent on this turn.

Because all-downside mechanics aren’t all that popular. Upkeep also had memory issues. We still do it occasionally but very infrequently.

Goblin Bombardment's Power

New 29 Aug 2014 Asked by zhoud 16 Comments

Is Goblin Bombardment too strong for Standard/Modern? Is Barrage of Expendables the most development is willing to push an effect like that now?

Not a developer, but yes, Goblin Bombardment is too good for Standard.

Magic Rewards Program

New 17 Jul 2014 Asked by plunoir 17 Comments

something I never figured out. Why get rid of the Magic Rewards system? As a person with a Sarkhan Vol DCI card I have to say it was an amazing program and I'm sad to see it's no longer implemented.

The blunt answer was it was insanely costly and, in the end, didn’t justify the expenditure. We decided to use the money on multiple other programs instead.

Token Rarity Concerns

New 12 Jun 2014 Asked by bigorns-deactivated20180316 35 Comments

The problem with the ad cards is that they are no longer expendable. Tokens are cool and useful in the game, but some are so rare that they become way more expensive than they should. Pulling an ad card when you could have the sweet vampire token for Sorin, Lord of Innistrad? That's a real bummer.

Would you rather never get tokens than occasionally get tokens?

Token Generation in Black

New 19 Dec 2013 Asked by aazadan 22 Comments

What do you think about token creature generation in black? Expendable fodder seems like something black would be all over. But as I look through Gatherer I find very little for black that's competitively cost enough to play in eternal formats, even more casually.

Black does have token making cards but they tend not to be too aggressively costed as black is not a primary token making color (they are white and green). To answer the question preemptively, blue is not primary either but it seems to have the special power that it tricks R&D into pushing its cards.

Market Research Tip

New 23 Aug 2013 Asked by leeroyskii 6 Comments

Not a question, but for the people that want to put there 2 cents in for "Market Research," they need to watch the top of the Wizards website. It reads "Magic needs your feedback, Please click here to take a survey," and has a picture of the goblin from "Barrage of Expendables." Question Marks needs to look for it. It does not look for them.
