Inquiry into Bloomburrow

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by t-a-c 3 Comments

I went to prerelease this weekend and greatly enjoyed the new set.

What I want to know is: Was Bloomburrow part of an elaborate scheme on your part to get Squirrels back in Standard?

Favorite Creature Type Conflict

Hi Mark! What does Sally thinks of you proclaiming that your favorite creature type is other than Squirrel?

I love many creature types. 🐿️ - I’m not talking to you.

Dream About Designer's House

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 8 Comments

Hi Mark, sorry if weird but last night I dreamed I was a guest in your house. It was a little awkward but you were very nice. Outside your kitchen window there were some very aggro squirrels. Just thought you might like to know (or maybe not, but here we are).

I’m glad I was a good dream host. I’ll keep an eye out for dream squirrels.

Squirrel-based Precon Choice

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by lookingupanddown 7 Comments

You've mentioned that you take random precons for Commander spellslinging. Now that there's a Squirrel-based precon, would you stick to that instead?

I’m sure I’ll play the Squirrel one, but I like to mix it up.

Squirrels Color Associations

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by gridnack 3 Comments

Black green squirrels work for Bloomburrow but I feel like squirrels could also lean white green for the community aspects.

We have made one white Squirrel, but I’m not sure how communal Squirrels are.

Squirrels Secondary Color Justification

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by quantext 4 Comments

Why was black chosen as the secondary color for squirrels?

It started because it fit a card I was making in Unstable. That started the ball rolling. I think black feels like a good fit as Squirrels aren’t too far away from Rats.

Importance of Squirrels in Magic

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by communist-mannyfesto 14 Comments

Question for you and Sally. How does it feel to have your work advocating for squirrels in black border Magic culminating in an entire archetype in a premier set? And an entire commander precon?

It feels good. 🐿️ - Representation matters.

Animal Appearance in Duos

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by pvonvil 5 Comments

From what I can gather all the duos, like Bakersbane Duo are in shards: Bakersbane duo is green but fits in a squirrel (bg) or raccoon deck (rg), making it a basically a Jund card. The black cards are an exception: Glivedive duo is in a wedge, Mardu (bat wb and lizard rb). Presumably the other black one will be squirrel (bg) and rat (ub)My question is: why? Is the pattern of shards intentional? Is the deviation to one color having wedges intentional?

The only guideline was each animal appeared in just two duos.

Unifying Ox and Minotaur Types

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by josphitia 11 Comments

Has there ever been any thought to combining the Ox and Minotaur creature types? Such as simplifying both to simply "Cow?" I'm a huge fan of bovines in all forms and it would be nice if all of the Ox in magic worked alongside their more anthropomorphic cousins the Minotaur. As it is now we're lucky to really get cards of *either* type printed. There's resonance to the name Minotaur, no doubt, but it also has its share of baggage. It has Greek connotations and that's probably a big reason Minotaurs are almost strictly in Theros (although some favorites, such as Neheb, are from other planes). I was happy that Outlaws had more Ox cards, but it also highlights my dissatisfaction: Holy Cow is an *ox* not a cow, despite the name. It feels like a retread of the Hound or Naga debacle all over again. Hound was simplified to Dog and all Snakes, from rattlesnakes to Naga, are simply the type Snake now. This allows snakes and dogs of all walks benefit from a shared unity. Cats had it right, we didn't need Leonin as a separate type.I just feel like there's unnecessary separation being created by dividing Ox and Minotaur and it has the same resonance failings as all dogs being labeled "hounds" had. If it's important for a particular creature to *be* a minotaur then they can just *have* minotaur in their name, like ~30% of minotaurs already do. There's also the simple fact that Minotaur is a longer average creature type, limiting design space for other types to be included. It's hard to justify why a Minotaur is on a random plane, but much less so if it's simply a "Cow Warrior" for example. As for why I think "Cow" should just be the combined type name, I simply think it fits. Cow is a resonant name. Almost everyone, East to west, knows *of* cows if only because their milk is such a widely used commodity. We don't call it "Ox's milk" after all. More than that, it's fun! Cow is *funny* in the same way *squirrel* is funny. It's amusing to see "Squirrels you control" in this game full of fighting. In that vein, "Cows you control" is an amusing line that can help break up the seriousness of a setting. I know this is making a mountain out of a molehill, but magic is a game of different perspectives coming together and creating something new. Cows are my favorite animal and it's simply dissatisfying, to me, that my Holy Cow can't benefit from a Kragma Warcaller. That Angrath, colloquially named "Cow Dad" in the community, would have the creature type "Minotaur." The only downside I can see is that "Cow" *does* specifically refer to females of a bovine species. But that is a distinction few, if any, seriously take into consideration. If one sees a field of cows, they're not saying "I see lots of cows and 3 bulls!" They're going to say "I see cows!"So to bring the thesis back, has there been any discussion internally to simplifying the Minotaur and Ox creature types under a single banner, such as "Cow?" I would also happily settle for "Cattle" as the new type. I just feel the current Ox vs Minotaur divide has to go, for both flavor and mechanical reasons, and the sooner the better.

I have been on Team Cow (as I was on Team Dog) for many years. I even made Cows in Un-sets. I still believe Minotaur should be its own creature type though.

Card Ideas for Blogatog World

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 9 Comments

"What other cards should Blogatog World have?" Sally and her squirrels. Banana foods. Rabiah Storm Beebles. Power Creep. New World Order. Drive to Work (but its "drive" like desire). Welcome to Blogatog. Selective Foretelling. Maybe :) (a red coinflip + punisher counterspell).

I like most of these suggestions. Two comments:
  1. I don’t thing Blogatog has ever been pro-banana.
  2. The multiple meaning of Drive to Work is intentional.

Chatterfang's Homeland Uncertainty

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by noybusiness 6 Comments

I'd like to point out that if Chatterfang, Squirrel General is now from Bloomburrow, that would be a retcon, because his bio in "The New Legends of Modern Horizons 2" mentions him fighting drakes and orcs, which apparently don't exist in Bloomburrow.

I do not know where Chatterfang is from.

Purpose of Bloomburrow Deck

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by vodalianjavelineer 1 Comments

Maro, Bloomburrow looks amazing, but I have one problem. I am a kitchen table player and I love creature type decks. Some decks (like my knights) regularly get new cards, but others (like my kithkin) might see a new card once a decade. For Bloomburrow, I know that rats, squirrels, and birds are likely to show up I. The future and have a ton of past cards to use, but for the types like rabbits or raccoons, I imagine they will not be supported long term. Why should I make a deck for those types?

Bloomburrow existing will make us create them more than we would of had it not existed. If volume of creature types is a core issue to you (and I get why it would be), yeah, I’d stick to the creature types that have more history with the game. But there are a lot of players who will have a lot of fun using Rabbits or Raccoons even if they have to stretch a bit (and probably play changelings).

Deciding Bat Card’s Color

Bats are the white/black archetype.

Consideration for Raccoon Mechanic

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 2 Comments

Raccoons eat garbage so was there any consideration for the raccoon mechanic to be something about the graveyard?

We talked about it, but Squirrels being in black/green just made it a better mechanical fit.

Exclusive Mechanics Question

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by su92 27 Comments

We've seen very few cards as of yet, but are the following mechanics exclusive to their faction: Valiant (Mice), Thresold (Rats), Expend (Racoons), Forage (Squirrels)? Or can we expect to see at least a little of (some of) them in more colors?

Those four mechanics are unique to one animal archetype.

Artifact-Related Issues in Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by polluxr 27 Comments

I was checking out the previews for Bloomburrow and people were raising concerns about Ygra turning every creature into an artifact creature (since Foods are inherently artifacts). Someone raised the point that those tokens (Clues, Treasure, Food, Maps, Blood Junk, etc) could have been given a unique type to avoid unwanted artifact-related issues. Was that ever considered/discussed?(loving the cards so far and I already love "Hop/bounce" as a mechanic for frogs and foraging for squirrels! Also looking forward to the pay/gain life for bats since Orzhov is my favorite pair. My compliments to the chefs! Great cooking!)

We consider artifact synergy a feature, not a bug.

Squirrels in Standard Archetype

Mark, what's it like to win the the long war such that now squirrels are going to be an archetype in standard after so very very long?

It feels good.

Possibility of Vanity Card

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by sjk9000 22 Comments

Would making a Squirrel card named Sally be a violation of the rules against vanity cards?

Unsure.
