Prospects for Insect Tribal Cards

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by meztere 11 Comments

I once had a Maro dream that we were playing horse shoes, but instead of the horseshoes themselves, it was gigantic centipedes.Maro, what is your opinion on bugs? Can we get some insect tribal toys?

I’m sure we’ll find a world where Insects make sense as a core component.

Insects in Bloomburrow

Were insects ever considered as a draft archetype for Bloomburrow?

We talked about it, but it didn’t really match the genre.

Non-mammal Creatures in Bloomburrow

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by thunderweb 14 Comments

I wonder if non-mammal animals (such as crab, fish, insect, octopus, or spider) were considered as a draft archetype for Bloomburrow.

Lizards are one of the ten two-color pair animals.

Incorporating Insects in White

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by realretro 7 Comments

Hi, will we get more insects in White? Specifically swarming/hive insects like bees, as their whole point is unity. Hoping bloomburrow has some of them!

We’ve talked about having hive insects in white. I could see a doing it in the right world. Bloomburrow is tapping into the anthropomorphic animal genre. Insects aren’t a huge part of that.

Hornet Queen’s Creature Type

New 30 May 2024 Asked by j-waffles 20 Comments

How come hornet queen doesn’t have the creature type hornet?

Because we use Insect as a larger grouping.

Creature Type Simplification

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by enigmaticchromatic 46 Comments

With the reduction of types, viashino being lizards for instance, has there been talk about errata-ing insect, pest, worm and the like to "bug" instead?I assume spiders would likely stay separate for thematic and mechanical reasons

There has been no Bug talk.

Creature Type Uniqueness

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by bcrazy713 111 Comments

Hey Mark, on the topic of players being worried about creature types losing their distinctiveness by being added in with the broader type rather than a specific race (ex. Viashino(Lizard) or Naga(Snake)), I looked to see how many are already currently templated this way and there are ALOT more than I realized.Archaic (Avatar), Aven (Bird), Leonin (Cat), Malamet (Cat), Nishoba (Cat Beast), Daemogoth (Demon), Ainok (Dog), Flamekin (Elemental), Loxodon (Elephant), Mycoid (Fungus), Thallid (Fungus), Akki (Goblin), Boggart (Goblin), Mogg (Goblin), Redcaps (Goblin), Eumidian (Insect), Kraul (Insect), Nantuko (Insect), Khenra (Jackal), Kitsune (Fox), Merrow (Merfolk), Selkie (Merfolk), Triton (Merfolk), Onakke (Ogre), Caryatid (Plant), Nezume (Rat), Rhox (Rhino), Amphin (Salamander), Orochi (Snake), Kami (Spirit), Drogskol (Spirit), Eidolon (Spirit), Ent (LoTR) (Treefolk), Trow (Troll), Kappa (Turtle), Liche (Zombie), Eternal (Zombie), Draugr (Zombie), Nim (Zombie), Skaab (Zombie)

Yep. Most of the ones that didn’t do it entered the game before we made this the default.

Grist's Swarm

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by beechdallama 33 Comments

May I invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia to ask a question that hath been plaguing my mind for years now? When Grist planeswalks, does she bring her hive mind of insects with her, or does she have to rebuild her swarm every time she visits a new plane?Furthermore, if the answer is the latter, when revisiting an old plane, do her swarm remember her and instinctively flock to her?

I think just Grist planeswalks and she has to get new insects, but that’s more a guess than something I definitively know.

Bloomburrow Insects

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by kaptain-kota 24 Comments

Can you tell us about the bug situation in Bloomburrow? I was thinking with a firefly in the key art, that there'd be at least one cute, friendly bug in the main cast.

Insects are not one of the ten animal archetypes.

Insects Creature Support

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by kaptain-kota 33 Comments

What creature types do we feel need love? Insects, please, please, please. I've always felt let down by WOTC not making them a triome's creature type in Ikoria, so seeing more support on another world would make me quite happy.

We talked about Insects on Ikoria, but felt they didn’t have the right feel for Ikoria’s aesthetic.

Alien Typeline Feedback

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by eldritchguy 34 Comments

Hi Mark! As a Vorthos I wanted to voice an opinion on the creature type "Alien". In brief I don't like it flavorfully because alieness is relative, especially in a setting that is composed by different worlds interacting with eachother. Mechanically I understand its role similar to Beast to group a lot of creatures whose species wouldn't get their own typeline, especially with sci-fi Universes Beyonds' products.
Creatures like "Davros" and "The face of Boe" that would be class-only without their species featured make sense as alien for a mechanical reason, but I think that cards like "Spelling Bee" or "Star Whale" work just fine as Insect and Whale and sticking the alien type on them just feels wrong.

Until we make a card that mechanically cares about something being an Alien. : )

Green Flight Aversion

New 23 Sep 2023 Asked by michel475193362 60 Comments

Why is green, nature's color and the color of life, so averse to flight?Insects, birds, bats, and other natural creatures have dominated the sky since ancient times, and they follow their instincts, quite wildly.Except for objects that fly due to human technology and humans themselves, those that fly in the sky exist not by technology or religion, but by simple and rustic nature.Nature is not only the earth. What is the essential reason why green, the color of nature, is averse to flight?

It’s more a game design balance issue than a flavor one.

Insectoid Tribe Design

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by renigma 27 Comments

Hey mark, theoretical set question

If in a set they had a portion of the characters be an Insectoid race, y'know like ant-people, bee-people, beetle-people, and the design idea was to make them work better together like other "tribe" based mechanics, would it be better to have it be an "Insect" as a singular "tribe" having the bees work with ants, etc, such that their color differences would have them working moreso with their own design space?

Or would it be better call to in such a case separate insect into more defined subsections, Like insect bee or insect ant, etc? would such a design in the first place be turned away as such to avoid such rules changes?

I assume they’d be Insect and not also a sub-category of Insect.

Fly Creature Type

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by jirachibi2550 34 Comments

Can we get Fly as a creature type so we can have a Dragon Fly that is a Dragon and a Fly whose creature type is Dragon Fly but isn't a Dragonfly? :^)

Flies would (sadly) be creature type Insect.

Diverse Bug Creatures

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by abxxxy 55 Comments

Hi Mark! The discourse over spiders and scorpions in red has me thinking about were different insects, arachnids, and bugs in general place within the color pie. Not only do I feel scorpions would be a great fit in red, but I think it would be cool if we saw stuff like white bees or blue red dragonflies. Could we see more diverse bugs in the future?

It’s a possibility.

Inspiration for Morophon

New 10 Sep 2023 Asked by yuridragon 35 Comments

Hey! I actually was lucky enough to meet you briefly and had you sign a copy of Morophon the Boundless, wherein you made a comment about them being a card you had designed in response to people asking about getting a goat legend. Was this just an example or one you specifically remember getting asked about? And are there any others you remember wanting Morophon to specifically be a response to?

I get asked for creature type lords all the time, most often for creature types that don’t have one yet. The Goat request came from a poster on this blog that regularly asked for more Goats. Others included Insects, Homarids, and Badgers.

Potential Insect Archetype

My guess is when, but not necessarily anytime soon.

Termite Queen Likelihood

New 01 Sep 2023 Asked by spgod 36 Comments

Since you're being asked so much about insects lately I have a question. You answered a question once years ago saying a possibility of a Termite Queen in white could be a thing. How much more likely is that to happen now?

Slightly better than in the past.

Bug Set Desire

New 31 Aug 2023 Asked by kaptain-kota 48 Comments

I was severely disappointed that Ikoria focused on nightmares instead of insects, as bugs are one of my favorite things ever. I'd like to also voice my intense interest in a bug set.

Insects were on the table, but didn’t capture the feel we wanted for the set’s monsters.

Future of Insect Cards

New 11 Aug 2023 Asked by mythial-blog 30 Comments

Hi Mark, I'm a big fan of Insects as a creature type have been getting the last 2 years. So I have a pair of bug themed question questions regarding the future of magic:1. Can we get a Venser Scale rating for the Planeswalker Grist? She's my favourite! 2. During the GenCon Panel, it was mentioned that the animals will play center role with, down to the Squirrels, Rabbits and Birds. Are Insects included under this umbrella? Or are they still just silly little guys?

I wasn’t specifically referring to Insects, but we are making more of them in the upcoming years.
