Appreciating Hard Work

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by sleep- 3 Comments

Hey mark, I haven’t played magic in a few years but I still follow you. I know you get a lot of flack from the community being an outward facing wotc employee. And I was definitely one of those people that gave you a hard time. We appreciate all the hard work you put in.

That’s nice to hear.

The playtesting is mostly done by employees.

Explaining Rare Polls

New 23 May 2024 Asked by sjk9000 0 Comments

What does "won the rare poll" mean?

To get a sense of how good the rares and mythic rares are, we do a poll among Wizards employees, where they note how much they like the designs.

Phyrexia Arc Feedback

New 09 May 2024 Asked by megastarfic 247 Comments

Hi Mark. I’m wondering if WOTC has heard some of the criticisms of the Phyrexia arc from trans and disabled fans. I honestly don’t know how prevalent the critique is but I’m surprised there hasn’t been at least a comment from WOTC staff about it. I have always loved how open WOTC seems to be to discussions of representation so I was very surprised when I felt two minority communities I am a part of never even got a “we weren’t thinking about it” or “we were aware but made these creative choices anyway.” Things as small as Kaya’s natural hairstyle rightly get while articles, but this gets nothing, and I’m wondering if you can tell us why.Ableism is often treated as the odd one out of the oppressions, as an afterthought. Did that happen here, or is there a rationale I missed? As someone with a surgically modified body of my own I was looking forward to my Xantcha to see myself in.

I haven’t heard the criticisms. Can you spell them out for me, as I do very much want to hear them?

Requesting Digital Art

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 58 Comments

I know it's not your area, but I have no idea who to ask that is responsible for sending digital card art to Scryfall, so I just keep asking WotC employees. The last 2 years of Heroes of the Realm cards don't have digital art, and it really shows. Every single card before that is digital and looks great. Can you ask whoever does that to send them the files please?

I can ask.

Stan Lee Card Rules

In theory, Would a Stan Lee card violate Wotc's vanity rules?

The vanity rules are about making cards about Wizards employees.

Internal Card Database Tool

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by spacyakrone 35 Comments

Do wizards employees have a special internal card library tool? Something like scryfall or gatherer to use when cross referencing existing cards when making new ones. Does it include cards currently in development or unreleased cards that have been decided to be printed? Bonus q: if no such tool exists, do you guys use gatherer, scryfall, or something else?

We have an internal card database we call Drake.

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 58 Comments

Well. We had our employee prerelease yesterday and I had a blast. I drafted and played sealed.

Arena Devs Communication

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by yuleooze 26 Comments

Hi Mark, are there any Arena devs that are willing to answer questions like you? If so what is the best way to contact them, thanks in advance!

I don’t know of any other Wizards employee answering questions on a regular schedule.

Heroes of the Realm Reprints

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by cgreyl3 24 Comments

Is it possible for old Heroes of the Realm cards to get into a bonus sheet for Secret Lairs? Like they would still have the Heroes card back. I understand that Heroes of the Realm is for WoTC employees, but I feel as if there is a call for some prints available to the public at this point.

I never say never, but I’ll call it highly, highly unlikely.

LGS View on Play Boosters

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by uncrownedjules 52 Comments

As an employee at a smaller local game store, our whole crew was pretty interested in the play booster announcement. I figured it couldn't hurt to share where we currently sit, since I'm curious if it's about the reaction you expected from smaller shops. On the whole, after reading through the article and discussing it as a store, we definitely like the idea of having less product to order and sell and on average do see play boosters as an improvement as product. That said, we'd already been struggling to fire draft events at the shop, with a few dedicated players always eager to draft but the rest of our Magic players not wanting to buy into a limited event when their budget for magic is already stretched thin by Commander precons and the like. Occasionally we might get a draft to fire, but the biggest factor a lot of players have brought up when saying why they don't want to enter a draft is so they have money for other magic releases. Or they do their drafting on Arena because thats also where they play standard, and its cheaper there. When they come to the shop they'd rather play commander with their new precons, and we can't blame them. But with that in mind, we're likely to stop supporting drafts altogether if it's going to be even more pricy to do so.So while overall I think we are happy about play boosters as vendors, we're seeing it as a sign that draft is going to be even harder to support for us to a point where we're already looking at abandoning it altogether for other events. I figured this was worth sharing as feedback from the LGS level instead of just an individual player, or if there's anything you believe we got wrong that you'd want to clarify.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s good to hear from individual stores. Here’s our hope. One of the thing set boosters did was pull people away from drafting because they were more encouraged to open the exciting booster pack than draft. We know plenty of people purchase set boosters. Since you will now be able to draft the packs you want to buy, we’re hoping we encourage some of the play booster buyers to draft as a means to get their cards since they were buying the packs anyway. If you were already buying three play boosters, you get a free draft.EDIT: I should have clarified the “paying for cards” part is free. In-store events often have an additional cost to cover prizes.

Tribal vs Typal

New 13 Jul 2023 Asked by you-are-talking-about-this 46 Comments

If something like Bitterblossom was to be reprinted would it still say “tribal” or be updated to say “typal”?

The word “typal” isn’t being used to replace the card type Tribal but the use of the word “tribal” to mean “cares about one or more creature types”. And again, this an internal vocabulary change for R&D. It’s not being reflected on cards, as we don’t use that vocabulary in rules text. It will appear only in articles, podcasts, and blog posts by Wizards employees (mostly me).

No. We can play in weekly FNM events as long as we make it known we’re Wizards employees.

Do you think we'll see more clown or employee creature types?

With the right worlds, maybe. Clown is more likely than Employee.

Minotaur Trivia

Hey Mark, yesterday was my birthday! For my my sacred rite of birthday trivia, I'd like to ask for some little-known trivia on Minotaurs, my favorite creature type.Happy New Year!!!

In the early days, the Hurloon Minotaur was considered the unofficial Wizards mascot. We made jean jackets of Nightmare to sell to the public, but only Wizards employees could get one with a Hurloon Minotaur. I still have mine.Happy Birthday!

Vanity Rule Exemption

New 02 Dec 2022 Asked by noahdoestechthings 32 Comments

Since the names of players are printed in the world championship decks, are they technically exempt from the vanity rule? Would love to see a competitive magic themed secret lair

The vanity rule applies to employees.

Generic Mana Appreciation

New 27 Oct 2022 Asked by silpheed-tandy 46 Comments

do you think that generic mana costs ever feel underappreciated? each of WUBRG are always touted as the cornerstones of the company. when hybrid mana costs came into the new hire, they caused a stir, but everyone soon came around to love them. but generic mana costs haven't been recognized ONCE as employee of the month! everyone just assumes they'll stay and do their work like always, but i can tell you that the whole company would collapse if ever they left! they deserve an Day of Appreciation

I’ll push for a Generic Mana Day.

Future Phelddagrifs

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by stormcrow13 22 Comments

If the no vanity card rule only applies to Wizard's employees does that mean we can get more Phelddagrifs? Its not like Richard Garfield doesn't already have a card with his name and face on it.

Vanity cards already printed are grandfathered in, so it wasn’t stopping more Phelddagrifs.

Post Malone Card Fact

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by coboney 48 Comments

I thought vanity cards were ruled out from new products - why is there an actual Post Malone card in the upcoming Secret Lair ?

The vanity rule is specifically for Wizards employees, as it can make people internally make poor decisions.
